Sandy Creek preps for Nick Chubb: ‘He’s like an Alabama tailback’ + playoff picks

Bracket

By David Purdum / For the AJC

No. 1 Sandy Creek begins its playoff defense with an intriguing matchup against running back Nick Chubb and Cedartown. Chubb, a Georgia commitment, has rushed for 2,612 yards and 40 touchdowns this season.

“He reminds you of Alabama tailbacks the way he runs and how physical he is,” said Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker, who coached Chubb last season in the Junior Bowl, which features rising seniors. “He can do a little bit everything, run with power, run with speed; he’ll make you miss. He’s just a really good player.”

The Patriots have won three of the last four state championships in their classification and enter the playoffs on a 25-game unbeaten streak. Walker is confident in his team’s mindset.

“Probably the last month or so, we’ve really honed in and focused,” said Walker. “You can tell it’s the playoffs. It’s a different mindset for them.”

Sandy Creek would meet No. 2 Griffin in the state quarterfinals if both teams advance.

First-timers: Three AAAA teams will be making their first trip to the playoffs: Lanier, Locus Grove and Veterans.  Veterans, the top seed out of Region 2, will host Locust Grove in the first round. Lanier, the third seed out of Region 8, will open against Caver-Atlanta.

Bracket breakdown: There are four ranked teams in the bottom-right quadrant of the AAAA bracket, the most of any of the quadrants: No. 3 Monroe Area, No. 4 Carrollton, No. 9 Stockbridge and No. 10 Westover. With first-round wins, Monroe Area and Carrollton would meet in the second round. The Purple Hurricanes open against Banneker. The Trojans host Northwest Whitfield on Friday. … Seventh-ranked Wayne County is the only ranked team in its quadrant (bottom-left) of the bracket.

Traveling Devils: Eighth-ranked Statesboro faces the longest road trip of the first round. The Blue Devils will travel more than 200 miles to take on the Cairo Syrupmakers.

CCW knows a thing or two about good running backs. He has arguably the Best Tandem, Swinney and Weems, in his backfield. They both are over 1000 yds this season. Chubb is good, but he hasn’t played a defense like Sandy Creek. Just ask Carrollton how good they are when they are healthy and focused. Looking forward to a great game at “The Battlefield”!

IN FOR THEM TO COMPETE WIT SC THEY ARE GOIN TO HAVE TO PASS TO SET UP THE RUN. THE CARROLLTON GAME WOULD HAVE BEEN A LIL MORE COMPETITIVE IF THEY WOULD OF USED THEIR ATHLETICS INSTEAD OF CHANGING UP THEIR WHOLE GAME PLAN. TAKING NOTHING AWAY FROM SC BUT U HAVE TO BEAT THEM WITH COACHING GOIN INTO THE GAME THEY ARE PLANNING ON STOPPING CHUBB AND CEDARTOWN SHOULD KNOW THAT SO THEY GOTTA GAMEPLAN FOR IT.

My buffed up and updated crystal ball shows Carrollton not making it to the championship game. And the fly in the ointment for Sandy Creek is Griffin. Not saying the Bears win, but if Sandy Creek does beat them, they will be so banged up in doing so it wont be funny.

It really gets interesting after the 1st round. Carrollton must regroup to have a chance of making finals-lots of balance on that side of the brackets. Griffin may be the big suprrise but is still untested- still have to go with Sandy Creek.Cedartown wont be able to pass to set up the run-SC will stop that too. 1 strong team we are forgetting here is Statesboro-Griffin will have to get by them to earn a shot at SC-2nd round has several interesting games on tap(presuming the favorites win).

There is no love for the teams coming from 6AAAA-B!!! Carver and Grady will prevail against the teams they play. Everyone says that Carver and Grady haven’t played anyone but neither has Chestatee or Lanier. Carver and Grady will advance to the second round…don’t be SHOCKED!! And Banneker will give Monroe Area everything they don’t. Banneker has a great QB and a pretty talented defense. Game won’t be a blow out like everyone thinks. Sc could not have a more dangerous 1st rounder.
And neither sc nor Carrollton makes it to the dome.

Statesboro may be the biggest problem for not just Griffin, but SC if Griffin loses to them. If Cedartown is passing, then the game is over. Their best bet is to run on every down. Chubb has never faced so much speed and hard hitting so he will likely be worn out by halftime seeing that he plays both ways. I’ve got Marist beating Carrollton in another close one and Creek winning in the dome.

Creek will have to play their best game of the year ( maybe ever ) to out rush Cedartown. I would go with SC to win this game, but they haven’t played against a back like this.” IF ” Cedartown’s line can open some holes, it will be a game that will be that will be very exciting and a toss-up! If not, a SC win.

The right side of the bracket looks to have several evenly matched teams-hard to pick a favorite among Monroe Area,Carrollton,Marist and Burke Co. Quarterfinals could easily be MA vs Burke or any of many combinations. Stockbridge could play spoiler but not likely. On the other side Statesboro was 1 point away from the region championship(game played in rain)-they played in a competetive region and look to have a very good defense. Griffin-Statesboro should be interesting. Just my take on it-2 or 3 weeks will clear up a lot of questions about one regions strength vs another.

Sandy Creek should score, I just don’t think it will be at will ! Their defense has practiced and played against good backs, but have never played against the best out there today. All I Can tell you is that if you let this guy start running downhill, SC doesn’t have the man power to face ” THE MAN” in this state. Boys against men usually winds up with children getting spanked! @ ru kiddingme. They will score at will. There region winner Dalton. Got smashed by Calhoun who is an AA school. Carrolton Destroyed Calhoun. Calhoun will probably win AA Again. But that shows you the strength in regions. Nick chubb has played against weak competition. Carrollton and Sandy Creek just happen to be in the same region. Sandy Creek is Elite!! There like Alabama. If a team struggles against poor competetion as Cedartown did you have to expect an abrupt end when playing top teams. I love my War Eagles and hope they go all the way but our defense is the weakest I’ve seen in years. I haven’t seen SC this year but remembering how strong they were last year with so many underclassman, I look for them to win State. In fact, I think they are the best team in the state after seeing tapes of the elite 6A and 5A teams. Sandy Creek versus Buford would be my dream game. Good luck to all teams.

The only thing anybody knows for certain is sandy creek is the team to beat. I still say carrollton’s is getting a bad rep off of one game. We’re not overrated as one blogger on here says. We just happens to play sandy creek first while everybody else watched now it’s time to put up or shut up! Griffin have been asking for sandy creek but they better watch out for either cairo or statesbroro. cairo had some early season losses but seems to be clicking at the right time. Statesbroro really should be a #1 seed but just lost to a tough wayne co team that should be a good game. The sandy creek cedartown game is going to be closer than everybody thinks but I could be wrong about that one. As far as my Trojans we should beat NW Whitfield easily I just want to see our attitude in this game the loss to SC was a big blow to carrollton’s confidents We need to regain our swagger I really didn’t see it against lagrange.

Trojan94,
Maybe Carrollton got a better rep than they should have based on region play and not one bad game? Who did Alexander play after playing SC? Who did Troup play after playing SC? Who did Fayette play after playing SC? How about Shaw?

You got it: Carrollton. So maybe, just maybe, Carrollton beat the garbage out of most region opponents because SC beat them up the week before. Does it come as a surprise then that LaGrange is the only team (other than Columbus) that did not play SC the week before playing Carrollton, and Carrollton didn’t dominate like they had everyone else?

I could be wrong. Just something to chew on.

SC defensive players are very much looking forward to playing against Chubb. They see it as a measuring stick for them against a D1 level talent. It will be the most physical game Chubb has played all season. Their goals are to (1) keep him out of the end zone and (2) keep him under 100 yds. As for the offense, they will do what they do. Coach Walker has taken out the championship belt and hung it in the locker room all week. The seniors on this team want to defend their title.

@APS – So APS Carver hasn’t played anyone yet? Just last week, they played #5/6 ranked Marist and was soundly defeated 34-14. Carver’s kicking crew puts them at a total disadvantage. You have to admit that AAAA region 6 is very weak. The region games were extremely uncompetitive and boring. Several Marist games moved into a running clock the second half and our 2nd and 3rd strings actually saw playing time. (region scores: 67-6, 35-0, 35-6, 47-6, 49-7, 45-0, 34-14). You have to give the Marist kids credit for coming out and playing hard the entire game despite lack of competition. Our most competitive games were the three pre-season non-region games.

Seems that there is a lot of jealousy out there-not just with Carrollton but SC,Buford,Calhoun and many constant winning programs. No-Carrollton is not favored to win state but year after year will have a strong winning program. The critics need to get some class-you dont see Marist fans for example trashing other teams-no-they respect them because they know what it takes to achieve these levels.

Casual Observer

Trojan 94- There is a reason I didn’t mention Oxford and Calhoun. They aren’t common opponents with SC and in all of the talk leading up to the Carrollton-SC game, everyone was comparing REGION scores between the two because they are common opponents. An overwhelming majority, AJC included, felt that based on those scores that Carrollton was the better team. So my point is maybe, just maybe, the reason Carrollton dominated their region foes was because SC beat up on the same team the week before EVERY week.

As for Carrollton “dominating” Lagrange. The score at halftime was 14-0. Against Alexander it was 49-7 at the half. Against Shaw it was 38-7 at half. Against Troup it was 42-6 at half. Against Fayette it was 35-7 at half. So, it appears Carrollton dominated all of the teams that were beat up the week before by SC but LaGrange did not have to face SC and Carrollton and in consecutive weeks. And look at that halftime score in relation to all of the others.

So again, did or does Carrollton have a bad rep based on one bad game against SC? Or, did Carrollton get a good rep based on playing a REGION schedule where they played almost every team the week after SC and blew them out. And then Carrollton came out sluggish and had a hard time “dominating” LaGrange like they had everyone else. Maybe Carrollton was sluggish because they felt what Alexander, Shaw, Fayette, and Troup felt after playing SC. Tired and beat up. So like I said, just something to chew on.

Trojan 94-you have a good point-by calling Carrollton a weak, overrated team they are minimizing Sandy Creek’s power. Probably most of this noise is not from fans of teams that have played SC.
