Poll Talk: Who’s No. 1 in AAAAAA? My guess (North Gwinnett) is as good as yours

One poster on our Friday Night Chat called the task of ranking Class AAAAAA a Gordian Knot.

Good call.

So who’s No. 1? North Gwinnett. Albeit the No. 3 seed from Region 7.

Here’s the logic -

Looking at the full season, North Gwinnett beat Norcross and Camden County – two other contenders for the No. 1 ranking – fairly handily. Also handled a pretty good Peachtree Ridge team that took Collins Hill and Norcross to the brink.

No other team had a better body of work over the regular season as North Gwinnett, IMO. Doesn’t matter if somebody else is playing better at the moment, or whether the injured quarterback is ready for the playoffs, or whether a coin toss didn’t go the Bulldogs’ way.

So why not Lovejoy, last week’s No. 2?

Lovejoy’s No. 2 ranking hinged largely on having lost close on the road to the previous No. 1, Colquitt County. Once Colquitt loses, then all the benefit of the doubt that Lovejoy accrued from being otherwise unbeaten and being the 2012 runner-up is gone.

Not many changes in the rankings otherwise. The post-season should be fun.

#1 should be Lovejoy. They’ve lost to the Packers and then just won out. It’s there turn to hold that top spot. I agree with Camden #2. Packers definitely #3. Just a side note without the Packers fumbles the other night we win that one 14-7. I hate to make excuses but I can’t help it. Camden`s defense is very very good, well coached. I wish Camden more luck with fumbles in the playoffs. May we meet again!!!

Keep on under estimating Archer!! Everyone is thinking too far down the road. Keep thinking that way and you will all be shocked. Our region may not be as strong as usual, but this team is better than the past two r8 state champs. Don’t be surpised to Archer in the semis.

Actually Hoover(AL) should be #1 in GA. They beat the Packers and would easily handle GA’s #1 and #2 teams now. They just won their first game in the playoffs by a huge score. No problem with me if they are #1 in GA ! None at all. They seem to be just as good if not better since Propst left there. Propst has his problems in GA, and he’s like the Braves. Can only get to a certain point, then fizzles!

Hmmm. To be honest, I’m not sure rankings really matter right now, do they? What matters is on the field. Period. Looking forward to Friday. I have no idea what to think of Westlake. I don’t think Camden’s ever played them before.

Colquitt only had 1 unforced turnover. Turnovers are part of the game, that is why they are a stat. Camden shocked Colquitt quickly, Colquitt never fully recovered. Colquitt was balanced team going into that game, Camden made Colquitt one dimensional. The regions leading rusher was bottled up all night. Colquitt went into that game averaging 155 rushing a game. Camden did what they do best run, run,run and run some more. The number 1 team is North Gwinnett, #2 Lovejoy, #3 Camden #4 Colquitt, #5 Norcoss #6 Collins Hill, #7 Archer, #8 Hillgrove, #9 Hughes #10 North Cobb

Why would anyone care about rankings at this point in the season? The playoffs are about to start, in 5 weeks everyone will know which team is # 1……PackGATA…….Fumbles are NOT the reason Camden beat Colquitt. Camden OUT PLAYED Colquitt, that’s why they won! It happens, get over it! RELEASE the damn CATS!!!! :-D

@Patrick, I agree with you on the Propst fizzle out thing. He gets out coached Everytime in every big game. And no I don’t count the first three rounds in the playoffs a big game. I talking region championships (Lost 3 out of 5 chances). Semi-Finals (Lost 2 out of 3 chances). State championship (0 for 1). I guess the coaching must be alot stronger in the state of Georgia.

I don’t agree with dropping Lovejoy all the way to 6th. I will say Lovejoy better watch out for us on Friday. I also think GPB should broadcast the game. One more thing, Lowndes was #6 when we won in the”concrete palace” last year

As well as any other team. YES, YES, YES Camden out played and out coached us on friday night without a doubt. I thought he dropped the opening kickoff and then vot hit trying to pick it up? Doesn’t matter now. Congrats on the region title.

Thanks high 5, but we don’t NEED a #1 ranking. We would like a little respect, not many have seen us play and we don’t have a history so we don’t get credit. Only after a meeting with NG will we get any credit. I can’t wait!!!!!

With North Gwinnett QB injuried, it is doubtful that North Gwinnet will win the 6A Championship. I think Lovejoy has a chance though.

Good point, TellItLikeItIs; unless you have seen the replacement QB play. He is bigger and faster. Just as good an arm. Fewer interceptions per attempt. More mobile. I am not going to make the point he is a better QB, but many folks in the North community think he may be. North hasn’t lost a step with QB Urzua – and now they have 2 QB’s ready to go in case one gets hurt.

In the past North had issues in the playoffs if the QB got hurt or intimidated. That won’t be an issue with 2 solid QBs.

More importantly, the fear of having a rookie at QB caused North to develop a power running game. And it looks like that may make a huge difference inside the red zone.

North still has to get past Milton. Milton looks to be fully capable of playing a great competitive game. But, if and when North loses, it will not be because of the backup QB. Most teams would do better to worry about their own first round opponents than to fret over North’s prospects.

Rating these teams at this point in the season is an impossible task. There is no right answer. Good arguments can be made why any one of about 6 teams is the best team in AAAAAA right now. And any one of those teams could also win the State Championship.

Fortunately, we will not have long to wait in order to watch some team prove it on the field. We will find out soon enough, and it is going to be very fun to watch.

4 of the top 8 teams are in the same quad on the bracket. I agree with what others have said; ranking doesn’t matter now. This is just an AJC opinion and it’s really pointless (FYI AJC dropped Camden to 7th last week) I think there’s 9 teams that have a legitimate chance to win state. The field is the deepest I can ever remember.

But…….for the sake of argument, why not Lovejoy? Did our whole season start and end with Colquitt? I didn’t know Colquitt and Lovejoy were con-joined twins. Colquitt loses, Lovejoy loses. I just don’t follow. I don’t mind Lovejoy not being #1 but your reasons are a bit crazy. Lovejoy lost 16 starters and has not missed a beat. They had the nationally ranked team on the ropes with a chance to win, in their house. Because of this, they are denied the #1 ranking because said team loses?

You could have come up with better reasons than that to deny them. I hope we make it back to the Dome and win it all and then you can’t say no and if you did, who would care?

RobFromNorcross

@Sportsnut == There are about eight teams who could make a case for their team as #1. Don’t make your head explode, relax, breathe in, breathe out… The games will be played and we will find out who is the best in the State within the next five weeks ON THE FIELD.

I think the champion will be one of the top 8. I know, I’m going out on a limb here (JK LOL) but I think any one of these 8 can win it all. 3 of the 8 will be eliminated because they’re in the same quadrant of the bracket, so ultimately, it can only be 5 of 8.

I am not upset. I knew this was coming. If you note the lead statement, “my guess”. This is nothing new. No one guessed the last 2 years. We knew. I am not saying we will win it all this year but we are here and everyone in the state knows what that means.

I did not plan to go to practice Monday but now I feel compelled. What better way to add to the chip than by showing them the new top 10. They are already hungry. Imagine the team that took Colquitt to the wire, seasoned, hungry and full of bad intentions on the football field. The fire will come, starting Friday.

Welcome to 12 Oaks, Marietta. The best thing about your trip will be the ride down. I don’t have any bad feelings for the Devils but you are coming in at a bad time. The attitude will be at such a level, the crying will start early. The D will be angry. Very angry. This is not just for Marietta fans. So……….what is everyone’s pick for the semi’s?………..I’ve got Colquitt, Collins Hill, Archer (!) & Lovejoy (they’ll win a close game with Norcross to get in) North Gwinnett, as a 3 seed, has too much of an up hill battle. I think Camden and Hillgrove will beat the crap out of each other, leaving Archer with home field advantage against everyone else but Camden. However, all of that will change if everyone has to make the trip down to Kingsland.

The rankings were done as well as could be expected the way tis season went. Very disappointing season for the rams but luckily for me the Archer Tigers are very close and have some home games so I will be there wearing red.

Archer is being questioned because of the their schedule?
Well lets look at the contenders. R7 by way of playing each other is clearly the exception to the weak competition argument.
R1 had a very weak season so how much weight should any region games carry? Out of region Camden lost to North Gwinnett, Colquitt squeaked by Lovejoy and lost to Birmingham.

Lovejoy beat, we’ll nobody. Hughes ?

North Cobb can be very good but champion good?

You could draw these teams out of a hat for the final poll

I’d much rather have the Hawgs as the underdogs….too much hype over scores and ratings when scores don’t show what truly happened during a game anyway….they can be very deceiving when you know what your team is capable of. We played the sloppiest game Friday night and still only lost by 1 Td. The bracket we are in is probably a better place to be truthfully. Good luck to all teams in the playoffs and safe travels. I don’t know what you guys at the AJC have been smoking, but your logic for overlooking Lovejoy AGAIN makes no sense. N. Gwinnett had their chance at no.1 and couldn’t hold it. Common sense says if you’re no. 2 and no.1 loses, you move up, especially at this stage in the season. This is the 2nd time this season this has happened to us. Oh well, I guess we’ll have to prove it on the field like we have all year. Looks like one of your beloved northside teams will be going down Friday night at 12 Oaks. Those of us that live south of I-20 have come to expect this kind of disrespect. We’ll be laughing all the way to the Dome my friend.

This is very disrespectful to Lovejoy but it’s all good we were in this same situation last. All did was beat all your great north Atlanta teams you sent. It very sad a team make state back to back lose there entire offense and 90% of there defense, playing with sophomore, juniors and a few freshmans. Win there region again. We will be at 12 Oak waiting. Come one come all.

RobFromNorcross

Looking at the rankings and trying to make sense of pecking order:

Archer – only Undefeated Team in AAAAAA

8 teams have just one loss to other GA teams:
North Gwinnett – lost to Collins Hill
Norcross – lost to North Gwinnett
Collins Hill – lost to Norcross
Colquitt – lost to Camden
Camden – lost to North Gwinnett
Lovejoy – lost to Colquitt
Hughes – lost to Creekside (AAAAA)
Hillgrove – lost to North Cobb (which lost to Walton and Marietta)

So, a case could be made that North Gwinnett, Norcross, Collins Hill, Lovejoy, Camden, Colquitt are all roughly equal in the loss department with each having just one loss to one of the other 6. Add undefeated Archer and you have 7 teams with a legitimate argument for #1. (And these are the teams that Todd has ranked 1-7)

Now let’s look at the WINS for these teams over other top teams:

Archer – beat no top teams (but they beat everyone they played)
North Gwinnett – beat Camden, Norcross, Peachtree Ridge, Mill Creek
Norcross – beat Collins Hill, Peachtree Ridge, Mill Creek
Collins Hill – beat North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, Mill Creek
Colquitt – beat Lovejoy, Lowndes
Camden – beat Lowndes, Colquitt
Lovejoy – beat Alpharetta
Hughes – beat no top teams
Hillgrove – beat McEachern, Marietta

If you look at the combination of who these teams lost to, and who they beat over the course of the season, I think Todd got it about right. Not that it matters because we will decide it on the field.
