Friday rewind: Donquell Green’s 7 TDs, Nick Chubb’s 300 yards

7-pack: Burke County quarterback Donquell Green accounted for seven touchdowns, including the winning score in overtime of the Bears’ 49-43 win over Wayne County. Green ran for four touchdowns, threw for two and caught another as the Bears won the Region 3-AAAA championship.

No. 1 seeds: Here are the top seeds in the AAAA state playoffs: Griffin, Sandy Creek, Veterans, Dalton, Burke County, Marist, Westover and Monroe Area.

Unbeatens: Sandy Creek, Griffin and Monroe Area are the only three teams to finish the regular season undefeated.

Stepping down: LaGrange coach Donnie Branch has resigned after three seasons. Branch was the defensive coordinator on three LaGrange state championship teams, but went 13-20 as head coach. The Grangers fell to Carrollton, 42-6, in Branch’s last game.

First-timers: Veterans and Locust Grove will meet in the first round of the playoffs. This is the first trip to the playoffs for both teams. The Lanier Longhorns also will be making their playoff debut. The Longhorns, the 3-seed out of Region 8, open at Carver (Atlanta).

Draught ended: Alexander is back on the playoffs for the first time since 1997.  The Cougars, the 4-seed out Region 5, open at Dalton.

Chubb watch: Cedartown running back Nick Chubb rushed for 305 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 41-27 win over Ridgeland. Chubb, a Georgia commitment, finished the regular season with 2,639 yards and 39 touchdowns.

I’m not sure about the yardage total for Nick Chubb. It seems like he has more than 2,339 for the year, but I could be wrong.

Griffin is one of five schools in the state (and the only AAAA team) to win every regular season game by 20 or more points.

Let me say this, Nick Chubb is a GREAT kid off the field as he is on the field and his mom has to be given credit for that!! I had Chubb at 2,694 yards through 10 games this year, but I am not the official stat man. Over the last 20 games Nick has 77 rushing TDs and 5,426 yards. Honestly, the kid could have close to 3,300 yards and over 48 TDs through 10 games in 2013. Next Friday night will be the greatest challenge for the Cedartown Bulldogs, but I can’t wait till 7:30 pm in Tyrone, Ga!

You’re welcome, AJC. I appreciate you guys’ hard work compiling these stats. There are a lot of numbers involved.

@Snook – Good luck to Cedartown. As a UGA and Griffin HS alumnus, I hope both Nick Chubb and Cedartown do well this weekend.

Any time AJC!
Old Bear Thanks for the complement and Go Dawgs (Cedartown & UGA).
No matter what happens this Friday night in Tyrone, Ga., I am just happy I have been able to watch Nick Chubb and many of these Seniors play football since they were little kids. The Creek might have more D1 talent than Cedartown, but the Dawgs will be eager to see what happens when they line up and play against the number 1 team in AAAA (on the road).
One last thing, #5 Caleb Ely is suppose to get out of the hospital tomorrow so please continue to pray for this young man and his family!! Caleb was hurt during last week’s thriller against Gilmer Co. and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

ive watched nick from his young rec ball age thru high school, i truly enjoyed him and his brother last year in the same back field, nick will do well at uga, i wish him and the dawgs good luck this friday night vs the creek, both teams have 9 wins the creek holds one tie and the dawgs hold one loss, that was by a field goal…points scored by both teams is close creek scoring what only 8 more this year than the dawgs…..if creeks d has an off night and cedartowns d has a good night, then we may have a new sheriff in town, to be the man ….you got to beat the man, also the creek had to beat ridgeland to earn the title, cedartown had to beat them twice to play this deep into the year….should be a good game, lets let them play before we pick a winner…..chs dawghouse

I’d like to wish Locust Grove good luck in the playoffs/ Nice to see them representing region 4 on their quadrant of the bracket. Tough draw against fellow first timers Veterans, should be a great game though. Good luck to all of this years players, coaches and families as the playoffs begin. Safe travels to all. I’ll be at the comfy confines of Veterans Memorial stadium in Griffin watching those Mighty Bears take on a wiley Rutland squad trying to come in and pull an upset. Warning Canes: Griffin is on HIGH ALERT for any upset like last years first round. GO BEARS!!!

It won’t be a great game Friday night. Creek will put a running clock on Cedartown. We have two D1 running backs, a D1 QB, and 4 D1 receivers. Dawghouse, you sound a lot like the Ridgeland faithful did last year when they spoke of points scored and points allowed. Who has Cedartown even played? Creek’s defense has been playing shorthanded since the first half of the first game against Plant and they are all finally healthy. This one ends early.

Creek Rising-Ditto-SC will score on every possession and also limit Chubb to a season low oupput. This one will probably be on the mercy rule at the end.

Good luck to the Gilmer County Bobcats this Friday against Troup County in Ellijay, GA!!! We don’t get much respect but we have now made the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years. Coach Tankersley has the program on the move. Congrats Tank. By the way Creek Rising!!!!, a little secret on stopping Chubb. He doesn’t like to be hit. Hit him early in the backfield and he’s done. Gilmer has held him to the lowest yardage over his HS career including a career low of 78 yds last year. GO BOBCATS!!!!!

Check out Chubb’s first touch down and see who doesn’t like to be touched (He broke 8 tackles):

240 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns…Good luck to the bobcats.

Troup Tigers

@Purp Nation: Celebrating making the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years seems strange when the last two playoff appearances ended in embarassing blow-outs for Gilmer. I guess the upside is that if Gilmer can score any points and stay within 56 of the Tigers, it will be an improvement over Gilmer’s first round game last year. Look for Troup to knock the purple off your uniforms; we ain’t no Region 7 pushover.

Snook, sorry for your loss to Gilmer. He is a great athlete. That run was almost worth the price of admission, but I am partial to a couple of the Johnny Flakes runs. But sorry you got beat, for the second year in a row. Like I said, we don’t get much PR. We are just a bunch of country boys. Bring your mouth piece Troup Tigers. You may beat us, but you’ll know you played a football game. See ya on Friday.
