(UPDATED) Class A Blog: Key results from Friday; Power Rating process; Playoff match ups prior to appeals

By S. Thomas Coleman
For the AJC

Here we go. The regular season is by the boards. Now it’s time for the second season … the playoffs.

In today’s blog we have some key results from Friday night, the process by which the power ratings will be finalized from the Georgia High School Association’s Steve Figueroa, and finally, a projected public and private school bracket, based on one that is making the rounds in the blogosphere.

No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 35, No. 8 Landmark Christian 0. The top ranked team in the AJC/Georgia High School Football Daily poll and the defending public school champions dominated the War Eagles to win their fourth consecutive Region 5 title. It was the second loss in a row for Landmark Christian (8-2, 4-2), which began the season 8-0. ELCA (10-0, 6-0) went into the game tied for first in the private school power ratings with Mt. Pisgah (10-0, 6-0), a 41-26 winner over Mt. Zion-Carroll, Friday. Landmark is presently No. 3 in the ratings, which will be finalized on Wednesday after any appeals are considered.

No. 3 Seminole County 18, Mitchell County 12. Seminole County finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in 40 years to win the Region 1 championship for the third straight season. Seminole County (10-0, 6-0) is currently in the No. 1 public school power rating spot, while Mitchell County (6-4, 5-1) sits tied with Trion at No. 12.

No. 10 Calvary Day 41, No. 4 Johnson County 14. The Cavaliers (8-2, 6-0) won the Region 3 title in overwhelming fashion, and have won eight consecutive games since beginning the season 0-2. It is the first outright region championship for Calvary Day since 1996. Calvary Day currently sits at No. 9 in the private school power ratings, while Johnson County (9-1, 5-1) which fell for the first time this season, is at No. 3 in the public power school ratings.

No. 2 Aquinas 33, First Presbyterian Day 32. The Irish (10-0, 7-0) finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in the 50-year history of the program and also won the school’s first region title. The Region 7 champs hold the No. 6 spot in the private school power ratings, while FPD (6-4, 5-2), which had won five in a row after starting the season 1-3, is at No. 15.

No. 5 Clinch County 30, Turner County 28. After failing to advance to the post season last year for the first time since 1994, the Panthers (7-3, 6-0) won their 16th region championship in school history by edging Turner County (4-6, 2-4). Clinch County is currently No. 4 in the public school power ratings while Rebels currently hold the final playoff spot at No. 16.

No. 9 Prince Avenue Christian 53, George Walton Academy 10. The Wolverines won their second Region 8 title in three seasons, as the Jeff Herron era in Bogart has gotten off to a great start. PAC (9-1, 6-0) sits at No. 7 in the private school power rating while George Walton (5-5, 2-4) will hope to hold on to the No. 16 spot.

The Process

Here is how the next seeding process will work, according to GHSA Director of Communications Steve Figueroa.

“Here is what will happen and when: The final power ratings will be posted on the GHSA web site sometime on Tuesday morning, Nov. 12. Schools then have until noon on Wednesday, Nov. 13 to appeal their power rating.

“Football coordinator Tommy Whittle and myself will review any such appeals and adjust the power ratings accordingly.

“Then, at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 13, a committee consisting of myself (representing Dr. Swearngin, who has an important meeting elsewhere), football coordinator Tommy Whittle, and two members of the State Executive Committee (Earl Etheridge and Don Corr) will meet here in the GHSA office to verify the results after the appeals and seed the brackets. The brackets will be posted on the GHSA web site before close of business (4 pm) on Wednesday, Nov. 13.”

@STC. You posted ELCA as defending public champ (should be private), and a 10-0 record. WACO game called for lightning, record is 9-0. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks to Cheer Tiger Dad.

STC or anybody else: What do you know about St. Anne-Pacelli? Hadn’t really heard much of them, mainly due to the fact that the only private school team they played was Brookstone?

Sucks to see Pace not make the playoffs. The first three games felt great and I thought this was our year. Oh well maybe next year.

The rematch comes much earlier than we discussed.

Can it get any more exciting than the last game at the Den?

Looking forward to hosting your Lions at Chris Hunter Stadium.

Good luck.

@Swamp Lizard I’m excited we didn’t win as many games and championships playing cupcakes in the playoffs. I will admit we are not 100%, but we welcome the challenge and it’s a familiar field for us. But I believe we will raise the trophy again due to experience in big time playoff games. Also, remember this atleast one team from region #3 has played for the state championship in each of the last six seasons.

@ TCDAWG25 …. I’m sure a JoCo / ECI rematch will be BIG !! ….. & that is pretty impressive that Region 3 has sent a team to the Championship 6 years in a row. I’m going to stick to my guns and say it will be a Region 2 matchup in the Dome though …. Irwin Co vs Clinch Co. I wish you and the Bulldogs the best & hope you get your “revenge”.

Nobody anywhere — quite possibly including the GHSA offices themselves — has a better handle on the power ratings than CTD. And certainly more on top of things than the “official partner” for most of the season (for the second year in a row). Now if we can only avoid getting any last minute surprises from the governing body.

Wow! Had a lot going on and busy all day, logged on to see what’s up in the world of Class A football just now and see a story about the brackets I released early this morning. That was a shocker! Now, I just hope I entered all those game results correctly… I’ll have to double check in the morning after some rest tonight.

@Pace Student, Pace ended up at #19 with a 10.11 PR. Appeals would occur if you found what you feel is in error in the GHSA calculations. I’ve ran into many issues throughout the season, pointed them out to the Maxpreps rep, and she has been very quick to make the corrections when verified to exist. Last week GHSA’s PR update matched what I was getting for the first time in 2 years! So I think there will be very little appeals that get approved this season (something issue may sneak in this week).

Thanks for the effort! I tried to keep up with Region 6 last year and lost my mind. After a few weeks my numbers were often wrong. Tough job keeping the “partner” squared away. Moreover, you’ve saved a bunch of Class A fanatics from electronically ripping each other’s throat out.

I am blessed to have a daughter who is a cheerleader for Mercy AND needs a ride home after every game! I have seen all but two games this year and the Bobcats have progressively improved since their first meeting with Mt. Paran. The QB (#7) is one tough triple threat (throwing, running and kicking), and the DB (#2) shuts down the opponents passing game. Good Luck Bobcats!

@ OLM CheerDad
I can confirm your assessment of the Bobcats. Based on what I saw pre-game vs game night this team is transformed. #7 is the key, #2 is an outstanding athlete/player, but this team has multiple developed contributors. Tough out. Have fun, good luck in the play-offs.

@csra706

I think you have the second team correct in your prediction. I predict a region 5 team (not sure which one) against ELCA and ELCA winning by 30 unless something happens to ELCA qb(don’t want anyone getting hurt just saying that he is instrumental in their success to date). Good luck. You never know the outcome until the game has been played. Even if another region 5 team doesn’t make the finals I still predict ELCA by 30 over whoever shows up. And no I don’t have a son that plays for ELCA.

Hopefully the refs will let the kids play and not determine outcomes with poor officiating. 50/50 chance of getting a good crew based on games that I have watched in single A. If someone has seen better officiating in single A then please stand to correct me.

The short of it SOS. Opponents victories contribute points to a team’s PR. Victories and losses vs a team with a winning record contributes more points than that with a losing season.

I predict that the PR #’s calculated by CTD will not all be correct-not due to any calculation error but due to different interpretation/application of the published documentation, or just plain having to guess at intent. Curious to see what other “adjustments” also occur by the final seeding published next Wed after the appeals are considered.

@S. Thomas Coleman yes it’s true and I guess he did not tell you about the two starters who got kicked off the team. #7, Jameson Vest, is one of the best all around football players in all of Class A. He stands out in a region with one of the best QB fields in all of Georgia high school football: ELCA’s Etheridge, Landmark’s McGuire, Holy Innocents’ Wright, Pace’s Johnson. You’d be hard pressed to find a region anywhere in the state, in any classification, with FIVE high-quality QB’s.

And #2 thanks you for the complement!

I haven’t talked to Coach Kearson since right after the JoCo game, but he didn’t mention any starters being dismissed from the team. That’s a shame, and it speaks even further to Coach Kearson and what he’s doing down there in Twin City. The easy thing to do is to look the other way when one of your best players needs to be disciplined.

@Swamp Lizard a lot of people don’t realize we were also missing Michael Sutton against JOCO, who four weeks ago was our leading rusher and played linebacker on defense. Not taken anything away from JOCO but this will be an entirely different game. Ask anyone who knows ECI football or has played against us will tell you h is the heart of the team and what enables us to run the ball and get tough yardage to keep the chains moving.

I am getting the impression that you region 5 folks are very proud of yourselves and kind of arrogant. I agree that ELCA is the premiere team in Class A, but how can you talk big about all the other teams being so great…OLM 1-3 vs no region teams, including a loss to Athens Academy, Holy Innocents a blowout loss to George Walton? It looks like the Private side is much stronger than the public side, especially looking at high seeds like Johnson Co, Lincoln County, and Clinch County all getting blown out by Private side opponents Calvary Day, Aquinas, and ELCA, respectively.

Not arrogant. Just think that region 5 plays against great competition every week with the exception of a few teams. These tough schedules have allowed these teams to improve each week and be ready for the playoffs. I may be eating crow come dec 15th or earlier but only time will tell. Good luck.

@ Augusta68 …. I don’t think we’re being arrogant, we just see these teams week in and week out. I made my prediction on looking at things logically …. ELCA is the favorite to win it all and they are in the upper bracket ….. OLM, Landmark, and Holy Innocents are in lower half … now Landmark & Holy Innocents will knock each other off. You have your takes and I have mine. I don’t think Lincoln Co is that good … you probably think Aquinas should be #1 …. do I think they are a good football team? Yes I do …. I just don’t know how good. I wish I could have seen Aquinas play this year to see how good they really are. I personally don’t think they have one “quality” win ( No Lincoln Co does not count ). One thing for sure, we will all know within a month or so.
