Class A Blog: What to Watch for Friday? Regions 1, 3 and 5 to decide titles on the field

By S. Thomas Coleman
For the AJC

Here are three games that will decide region champions, and four others worthy of mention:

No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (9-0, 5-0) at No. 8 Landmark Christian (8-1, 4-1). The Chargers are poised to claim their fourth consecutive Region 5 crown as they march toward their second consecutive Class A private school state title. Landmark hopes to reclaim some momentum heading into the playoffs, after falling for the first time this season last week at Holy Innocents’ (6-4, 4-2), 29-28. This is the fourth straight season the Region 5 title has come down to a battle between ELCA and Landmark.

Mitchell County (6-3, 5-0) at No. 3 Seminole County (9-0, 5-0). The Eagles began the season 1-3 but have become one of the hottest teams in Class A, stringing together five straight wins during Region 1 competition. During the run, Mitchell County has outscored its opponents 218-43, including a 80-0 demolition of winless Stewart County. Seminole County could not only win its third consecutive Region 1 championship with a victory, but it can also solidify its hold on the top seed in the Class A public school power ratings.

No. 10 Calvary Day (7-2, 5-0) at No. 4 Johnson County (9-0, 5-0). Calvary Day, the Region 3 – Division A champs, is the hottest team in Class A with seven consecutive wins after starting off 0-2. Like Mitchell County in Region 1, the Cavaliers have scorched their opponents during the run, outscoring them 309-33. Johnson County, the Division B champions, are out to prove that it is a serious contender for the Class A public school state title, which would be its first since Herschel Walker led the Trojans to the 1979 championship.

Four more games to consider:

First Presbyterian Day (6-3, 5-1) at No. 2 Aquinas (9-0, 6-0)

Turner County (4-5, 2-3) at No. 5 Clinch County (6-3, 5-0)

Charlton County (6-3, 4-1) at No. 7 Irwin County (7-1-1, 4-1)

George Walton Academy (5-4, 2-3) at No. 9 Prince Avenue Christian (8-1, 5-0)

ELCA vs Landmark ….. there seems to be a lot of forgone conclusion that this is an ELCA win over Landmark, that ELCA is going to coast threw the playoffs, that the only way for any other team to get to the Dome is to be opposite side of the bracket from ELCA …… well, ELCA can be beat and will be beat if they drink all this KOOL-AID !! I’m sure Coach Gess is giving them this same message, that NO ONE is unbeatable. I’m sure Landmark will have it’s say Friday night and that every other team that comes to Comittment Field in the playoffs will bring their “A” game and a chip on their shoulders to knock them off. ELCA will have to stay “FOCUSED” to win it’s second State Championship.

Swamp’s Picks ….

ELCA over Landmark … if they are “focused”
Seminole Co over Mitchell Co … just don’t think this game will be close.
Johnson Co over Calvary Day … my Buddy really likes Calvary Day in this one, but JoCo fans, I owe you this !!
Aquinas over FPD … I think this game will be close. I like the FPD coaching staff.
Clinch Co over Turner Co … Clinch has worked hard to getting back to being a “Real Player”.
Irwin Co over Charlton Co … could be best Class A game of the week.
Prince Ave over George Walton … Does GWA have any fight left?

Good luck to your teams and safe travels on the road.

Swamp, you picked against us when we played SCPS and ECI and we won… Now you’re picking with us…. I hope this ain’t a case of Lee Corso when picking UGA! If we lose, I blame you! Lol. It’s obviously we play better when you’re doubting us! Haha!

ELCA over Landmark, 35-14: Last week showed us that Landmark is good, but not quite at ELCA caliber.

Pace over Mt. Vernon, 55-7: This won’t really do much for the PR. They need help in front of them.

OLM over Strong Rock, 45-7: OLM is too much on both sides of the ball.

Darlington over Whitefield, 42-21: Last week showed us Darlington has some holes, but they’re still the superor team. Whitefield’s QB is going to have to do it all if they want a chance.

Mt. Pisgah over Mt. Zion, 41-13; Pisgah might struggle a little in the first half, but they’ll take over the second half.

Christian Heritage over Fellowship, 48-14: CH already beat them 41-0 earlier in the season. I feel Fellowship’s offense may be a little better than their previous meeting.

Mt. Paran over Trion, 49-7: Paran won’t take them lightly.

Just my predictions……don’t really know much about teams outside of Regions 5 and 6. Lot of blowouts this week IMO

@ STC – I actually went back today and saw where you answered my question about how they will seed region winners before I had asked it on the last blog. Sorry I missed it and thanks for answering! (And thanks to Tiger for answering as well.)

@Swamp Lizard I believe this will be the year of the upset in the early rounds of the playoffs. Which would make the playoffs very interesting. So, I say lookout teams with high seeds the teams you play might be perennial powerhouses.

Pace should win pretty easily tomorrow. I also see ELCA dominating Landmark tomorrow. ELCA is head and shoulders above everyone else. Anyone know what would put Pace in the playoffs? Or have a general guess?

To Pace Student, a major contribution from one of your parents. Just kidding. Pace has little to no shot due to their opponents record.

One eye of the Tiger will closely monitor Herschel Walker Field in Wrightsville where the Region 3 championship will be decided. Certainly Darlington must and should win in Mableton, but the CDS @ JoCo game has a greater impact on the Tiger’s play-off future. Rooting for some Trojans.

MY DREAM SCENARIO (rev. 2): ELCA wins earning the 1 seed, JoCo wins and Patriots and Tigers win out earning 2 and 7 seeds and play NOV-29/30 for an un-official on-field region championship and a 3rd round game with a shot at the Dome.

Ride, Win, Play Again! Go Tigers!

I know that GWA has been going through a rough stretch recently, but I am expecting a huge turnout @ Brad Akin Field in Bogart tonight. Prince and GWA have an intense rivalry that has been growing and tonight should be a battle. Prince has to get all their playmakers involved and limit the damage by Williams.

Swamp Lizard, I have seen a lot of posts on other blogs about ELCA’s alleged recruiting. Would you mind posting the number of players (no names) on the team (8th grade and up) who receive some sort of financial assistance (GOAL, hardship, scholarship, etc.)? I do not think anyone cares if a family pays their child’s way to attend a private school and they are a great athlete, but if a child is a great athlete and is receiving financial assistance, and there are several of them, that should throw up a red flag to GHSA. Perhaps during the realignment next year, the GHSA can require that schools disclose this information?

@ TCDAWG25 ….. it very well might be the year of the “underdog” where the lower seeds win games in round 1, round 2, etc … but if you remember last year the lower seeds made runs throughout the playoffs. That’s my “issue” with the Power Rankings …… I just don’t think it “seeds” the teams from best #1 to #16. When the final rankings come out next week and we all see the brackets ….. I’m sure we will see teams that will be lower seeds, that we will all agree that will be “favorites” to win.

@ Pigskin Princess …. probably one of my downfalls is that I’m very honest …. I see things in black and white and I do not like “grey” areas. If I knew the answer to your question, I would tell you. I do not rub shoulders with the “high brass” at ELCA nor do I get into “pollitics” of school business. I can honestly say that I do not know of ELCA doing any wrong and “giving” kids money ( scholorships ) just to play sports there. On the flip side, I know finacial aid is given ( GOAL ) to students in need. But to say ELCA is “recruiting” is a far reach of “envy” by most. I have said this before, if I knew of ANY wrong doing by ELCA, I would be very upset myself.

@Swamp The weighting is different for the higher classification opponents this year, so I would think the 2013 PR would be much more accurate than 2012. I will go out on a limb and say that it will probably be a more accurate measure of a team’s ability than the old system (that 2A-6A still use). Didn’t we see some #4 seeds from a strong region beat some #1 seeds?

It would be an interesting exercise to compare the PR system’s playoff pairings versus the pairings from the old system. Of course, the private/public split would make it difficult to really compare, but it would still be interesting wouldn’t you say?

You guys kill me with your leading questions about ELCA doing something wrong. Henry County is a hotbed of talent. But it doesn’t stop there! There are several schools in the Southern Cresent that have good programs… Also, I’m pretty sure it is documented to the GHSA the questions you are asking. But again to people that have these questions, the only answer you are looking for is…ELCA is cheating!

@ CheerTigerDad …… I think your right. One, the Power Rankings should be a little better ( I still don’t like them ) but they should be better ( closer to #1 – #16 ). We haven’t talked much about this, but weather we like this or not, some regions are stronger than others ……. you will have 6-4 teams sitting at the house, while 5-5 teams are in. The old way, 4 teams from every region got in. That’s not a sure thing anymore. So I do think we are “closer” to having the best 16 teams in the bracket.

The Guy Next to Swamp Lizard – Thoughtful answer. Let’s take it a step further and ask what percent of ELCA financial aid (of every type) goes to football players and what percent goes to females at the school. Don’t you think some parents there would like to know that?

LoveFridayFootball

November 8th, 2013

I dont think the parents of females at the school are concerned with the football players… Seeing as how the Elca girl volleyball team was one game away from the championship game and the girls softball team just won the state title! So, where again should we point that finger???

Pigskin, Swamp and the guy next to Swamp,
I wouldn’t mind seeing the stats on private schools with numbers and %’s would you? I think it is a fair data point. While every private school will say “we don’t recruit!!!” I’m not sure that is a fact. If the data/facts are reported (and maybe they are somewhere?) said that school “X” has 46 football players and 36 of those players (76%) receive some type of financial aid, vs another school “Y” has 46 players and 3 (7%) who receive some sort of financial assistance (GOAL, hardship, scholarship, etc.) I think that is possibly a telling point about a program. I mean…. High School is not college and scholarships up until now have been reserved for college. That is partly what keeps HS sports pure. What about a % of scholarships related to the athletic team or program vs. the student body? i.e. If a football team is at 50% and the student body as a whole is at 10%… doesn’t that say something too? Same holds true in all sports. If a basketball team has 14 of 15 guys enjoying a scholarship (for whatever reason) yet the school body is at 5%, does that seem like something is happening beyond hard work? Just a thought…..

Pigskin Princess

LoveFridayFootball Hmmm, so I guess you are saying that the football team needs to award financial aid to be competitive, but the girls volleyball and softball teams do not?

I’m tired of hearing the recruiting slander on this blog. Teams like ELCA just have good programs with good coaching and the boys work hard. I’m also willing to bet their parents go the extra mile to help the team do whatever it takes to win. If you want your kid to win, get him up at 5:45am so he can work out before school.Get involved in your booster club. Cook for the team. Make noise for your team(that’s one for the Pace folks). ……You know…every one wants to play for a winner. good teams attract good athetes. There is a reason why they are called “private” schools. I struggle financially to keep my kid in private school(it’s not ELCA). I would work 2 jobs if I had to…just to keep him there. I think the recruiting smears come from a little bit of jealousy. Best of luck to all teams tonight. Play safe!

Pigskin…. thats what you get from my comments??? How about this, lets see from all the parents complaining about Elca how many of you get up at 5am to have your child at school for 6am workouts? Daily!!! And by the way, those workouts started one week after Elca won the state championship last year! Thats the way it is year after year. You want answers and you want the truth, well to take a line from a pretty good movie….YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
Everyone is so quick to say Elca cheats or pays players tuition. Instead of looking at actually what is going on at Elca. My son is a football player at Elca and has been for 3 yrs now. I bust my tail to keep him there and could care less what family has a kid(s) there and pay less than I do!

Pigskin Princess, it’s really annoying when people like yourself come onto these blogs and try to stir up trouble, even though you have nothing to back it up. People were saying the same thing regarding recruiting about Pace early in the season, just because they started 3-0. They lost 1 game and everybody dropped the topic. Why is that?
