AA blog: Here’s what to look for Friday

Here’s what to look for Friday in Class AA:

  • In Region 6, the winner of the Lovett Lions-Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans game will not only determine the region championship, but could possibly lay the foundation for how the entire Class AA state playoffs shape up. The loser will be lumped into the other side of the bracket, where No. 1-ranked Lamar County awaits as Region 4’s top seed.

Is the "Mini-Playoff Game" a good tie-breaker system?

  • In Region 5, the No. 9-ranked Bowdon Red Devils travel to the Heard County Braves to decide the region. The winner of Friday’s contest gets Region 7’s No. 4 seed, the loser gets Region 7’s No. 3 seed. And about Region 7…
  • The only seed determined in Region 7 is No. 1, which Calhoun has clinched. The rest of the region is complicated, however, and the end result could be a dreaded “Mini-Playoff Game.” If second-place Model beats the Dade County Wolverines – Model has beaten the Wolverines handily the last four years – Model is the 2 seed. Then, if Pepperell and Coosa beat the bottom feeders of the region – also likely – then Dade County, Coosa and Pepperell would be in a three-way tie for the last two playoff spots. Enter the “Mini-Playoff Game.” On Monday, those three teams would travel to the decided neutral field, which for this region is Calhoun, and all three would play in a single game consisting of two five-minute halves. A coin flip would determine which two teams play the first five-minute half. The winner of that half gets the No. 3 seed. The loser of the first half plays the remaining team in the second half and the second half winner gets the No. 4 seed. Got all that? Good luck with that, guys.
  • Same is the case in 1-AA. If Cook defeats Early County, there would be a three-way tie for the last two spots. Per GHSF Daily, it’s been confirmed by Fitzgerald’s Jason Strickland that in case of a three-way tie, a Mini-Playoff Game will take place Monday at 7 p.m. at Worth County High. The coin flip would likely be Friday following the Cook-Early County game, both Strickland and Ken Cofer said.

Also, the loser of Lovett-GAC likely would get a second round playoff matchup with Calhoun at Calhoun, not a favorable environment for a road playoff win.

The two teams in the mini game scenario play two five minute halves with the loser then playing the remaining team in another two five minute halves mini game. If the “bye” team wins the second game, the seeding is based on how the two teams did head to head in the regular season.
