Playoff scenarios heading into final weekend of regular season

Here are the playoff scenarios for each region heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

*Region 1: Thomas County Central, Lee County, Harris County and Bainbridge have clinched the four playoff berths. Thomas County Central (8-1, 4-0) will be the champion with a victory over Harris County (7-2, 3-1) or by holding Harris to fewer than 30 points. In the event of a three-way tie with Lee County (8-1, 3-1), points allowed in the three games between those teams will be the tiebreaker. Thomas Central has allowed 14. Harris has allowed 44. Lee has hallowed 52.

*Region 2: Warner Robins, Northside of Warner Robins and Houston County have clinched playoff berths, and Lakeside of Evans is likely to get the other one. Evans could take Lakeside’s spot, but only if it upsets Northside and Lakeside loses to Warner Robins. Warner Robins will be the champion if it beats Lakeside. If Warner Robins loses, Northside will be the champion with a victory.

*Region 3: Ware County, Richmond Hill, Glynn Academy and Effingham County have clinched the four playoff berths. Ware County is the region champion, and Richmond Hill is the runner-up. Glynn Academy will clinch third place with a victory over Jenkins or an Effingham County loss to Ware. If neither happens, Effingham finishes third and Glynn Academy takes fourth.

*Region 4: The winners of the four play-in games will be the region’s playoff teams. Those games are: Ola at Creekside, Drew at McIntosh, Whitewater at Union Grove, and Northgate at Mundy’s Mill. Creekside (9-0) will be the champion with a victory over Ola (2-7) as the highest seed from its subregion to win this week. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head result. Division B winner Creekside did not play Division A winner Mundy’s Mill. In the second tiebreaker, Creekside has the better overall region record.

*Region 5: North Paulding, South Paulding and Allatoona have clinched playoff berths. East Paulding gets the other spot if it beats Allatoona or if Rome loses to Woodland of Cartersville. Rome appears set to take fourth place if it wins and East Paulding loses. North Paulding will be the champion with a victory over Villa Rica. If North Paulding loses, South Paulding will be the champion with a victory over Lithia Springs.

*Region 6: The winner of the Tucker-Mays game will be the region champion and the loser will be the runner-up. Stephenson has locked up third place (as well as an intriguing first-round matchup in the playoffs with the Flowery Branch-Gainesville loser). M.L. King will be the fourth-place team if it beats Miller Grove or if Arabia Mountain loses to Lakeside of Atlanta. Arabia Mountain gets fourth place if it wins and M.L. King loses.

*Region 7: The winners of the four play-in games will be the region’s playoff teams. Those games are: Kell at Cambridge, Riverwood at Northview, Pope at Sequoyah and Sprayberry at Creekview. Kell (9-0) will be the champion with a victory over Cambridge (3-6) as the highest seed from its subregion to win this week. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head result. Division B winner Kell beat Division A winner Creekview in the regular season.

*Region 8: The winner of the Flowery Branch-Gainesville game will be the region champion and the loser will be the runner-up. Clarke Central has clinched third place, and Heritage of Conyers will be the No. 4 seed.

Its not looking good for Arabia Mountain. If both they and Mlk finish tied at seasons end, Mlk will get the nod even though Arabia M. Won the head to head meeting. I don’t like this way of settling a tie

Region 4 is of great interest to me. All these teams are Southern Crescent teams and I wish them all well. That being said, I have to go with our neighbors, Mundy’s Mill over Northgate and Drew over McIntosh. Creekside over Ola and Union Grove over Whitewater.

The 4B-AAAAA subregion was 12-1 against 4A-AAAAA subregion teams during the regular season. The Fairburn/Coweta/Fayette side has dominated.

@ JAB; hasn’t been a good week for Stephenson. 1st the loss to Mays, the incident that occurred on Sunday at the school and now a possible 1st round matchup with Gainesville or Flower branch!!! Looks like another traditional year for Stephenson, 1 and done!!!!

@JAB, I don’t doubt for a minute that either one of those teams are too thrilled with seeing Stephenson in the first round. I also know that over the last 4 weeks (since Oct. 11th), no 5A team has been in as many “True” dog fights (3) as Stephenson and you werent dominated in any of those games.

I know first hand what you have in the transfers from us and I also saw on 10/11 how talented your team is. If your coaches stick to what made you formidable (the run) and grind it out on offense, you will control the clock which is what you need to do against the throw-1st teams. …and your defense is among the top in the state. Trust your front 7 to do their part and make your secondary play honest and you could beat any of these teams.

Sounds easier than can be done; but Stephenson is not your regular 3rd seed team.

Good take realist. I believe gville is as talented as any team in the state, but the regular season schedule doesn’t present the challenges needed to bring out the dog in a team.

Last year gville didn’t really unleash their dog until the second half of the playoff game against Kell. After that it was lights out.

Whether its Stephenson, Arabia or MLK, we will be ready for whoever has to make the drive up 9-85!

Stephenson has enough defense but that changing QB stuff has got to stop. Run it with Rivers first and then mix in a FEW passes. So simple. But Coach Ball has some infatuation with passing too much. Reggie stop it, just stop it! Pick ONE QB and go back to football 101 – Run first and play defense.

THE "CANNON RULES"!!

November 5th, 2013
4:56 pm

Well EAST entered it’s game last Friday night with winless LITHIA SPRINGS knowing it was staring at missing the playoffs for only the 2nd time since 05. With a loss to ROME a few weeks ago EAST had dug a hole that forced EAST to beat LITHIA SPRINGS last Friday and then go TO ALLATOONA this Friday and win AGAIN! The problems at EAST this year have been no secret and many post have been made about them.

The air had seemingly gone out of the EAST balloon with the loss to SOUTH two weeks ago and you could tell it from the sparse attendance in the Home stands last week. EAST scored twice in the first 6 minutes and went on to win 34 / 0 with the CANNON firing and the smoke filling the air. Expecting one final game with ALLATOONA to end the season seemed likely…THEN suddenly the smoke cleared and a VILLA RICA team that EAST had beat 31 / 0 a few weeks before came to the rescue and beat ROME 21 / 20 in overtime.

Now the EAST team that was sure it was going to be on the outside looking in this year has it’s playoff fate SOLELY in it’s own hands. Not only can EAST make the playoffs BUT they can make it as the # 3 spot…and this is HUGE!!! The # 4 seed is going to have to play KELL at KELL, no small mountain to climb this year!

So…EAST has to STOP all the bickering, FORGET about all the problems, pull themselves up and PRACTICE harder than they have all year and go into ALLATOONA with one thing on their mind…WIN!!!

Do this and they keep the playoff streak alive and live to play in the 1st Round of the State Playoffs. SO EAST…JUST WIN!!!

The EAST RAIDER NATION of cheering, bell ringing followers need to support this team and fill the visitors side this Friday at ALLATOONA…

Proud to be able to say again…

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

GO RAIDERS!!!

@gomez3000 – I agree with the “Play in” games – so confusing, got to be a better way.

@Realist123 – Good points around the 2013 Jaguars, if the coaches can buy into that game plan, Stephenson should survive for another playoff round.

I would also, mention the same for MLK, buying into more of their run game. The Lions have 2 RBs that can tote the rock, feature their skills MORE into the offense, control the clock and keep Mr. Watson on the sideline as much as possible and the Lions, might and I say again might have success. Again, this will be a coaching decision.

“WE ARE TUCKER” – Currently 9-0 & #1 in the REGION – The Tigers have been RELEASED!!!

@gomez3000. Both Stephensen and Mlk have very good fast defenses. Its the offenses that are inconsistent. You look at teams like Tucker and Marist, they have a definite identity when it comes to their offense. When you play those teams you know what they are gonna do but the challenge is can you stop it. Teams wih an offensive identity like these teams are committed to running these offenses like they invented them. Any new players that come in have to adapt. Just who is Stephenson and Mlk offensively. If they can ever find a good offensive scheme or philosophy and build their tradition around it and drill it into the players they will get that elusive state title. Teams like Tucker always seem to show up in every game. You won’t ever of teams like Tucker or Marist being upset by teams with less talent. These type of teams know who they are as a team and they show up and play their style of ball even in a loss.

@ Decatur’s Finest, it has been a trying week for the JAGS, and certainly we should pray for the tragic incident at the school, but I’ve already stated in another blog that, Stephenson is the best 3rd place team in the state, the JAGS will not be intimidated or back down to any team in AAAAA, you guys are failing to realize that we were not blown out by our 2 loses, both games could have gone the other way and we could easily be 9 – 0.

@ Realist123, it has been a CAT fight loosing those two games to TUCKER & MAYS, in a tough region where anything can happen on any given Friday or Saturday, just like the SEC Lol., we beat up on each other and then win playoffs games, there’s no doubt that the JAGS will be ready and will step up to the test, they are a better road team.

@ gomez3000 , I left the game Saturday like a confuse Tucker Tiger Lol.,??? (Just kidding BIG CATS, I’m actually proud of ya’ll sitting on top of AAAAA representing our region) not knowing whether I was coming are going, I ask myself what just happened??? We got too much talent and had so many missed opportunities, still not believing why we couldn’t score on the 2 yd line. We made so many mental mistakes; I was sitting on MAYS side, many were saying “clock run out!”…

Anywho, Lol., I like where we currently are at, we are no longer the hunted,we are hunting any and everybody that are in our way, I see a deja Vu, in the state championship this year, not Gainesville, but Stephenson but this time. It’s going to be a crazy ride to the dome, good luck everybody until you meet the JAGS…

@ itsonlywrite, if we do meet, I’m gonna have my popcorn, nacho’s, chicken wings, fish sandwich, and “This Is It” meal ready, Lol., cause it’s gonna be a long night…

@ rwdekalb, that’s the way it’s always been, if it’s tied between 2 teams, the team who won the heads up battle will get the nod! Last year Stephenson and Tucker were tied, but Stephenson got the 2nd place slot because they beat Tucker heads up. We’ve been 2nd to MLK 3 years in a row when we played up because they beat us heads up! I thinks that fair. “The team that won heads up deserve to be in, but it is said to see a team like Arabia to sit home, but it was the same senario last year when SWD, got the 4th spot over Miller Grove…

@jus sayin, most would disagree with this, but I agree with you. MLK does have the better studs on defense in my eyes, but it is soooo clear that Arabia has the superior coaching now and that makes a huge difference. You could see this development starting from Arabia in spurts last year against the big 3 despite the blow outs. If their tougher games were scheduled later in the season, this may be different. If they don’t lose too much personnel this year, they might make 2014 an interesting year in R6….plus with Jarvis turning Mays around, who knows how that region will turn out.

————
Gainesville 60 pts. and a Martin Luther King 12 pts. because you cant kick field goals and Gainesville will run them off the field gasping for breath when D-Wat start running the no-huddle offense. No one in region 6 can handle the no huddle offense.

Flowery Branch 48 pts. and Stephenson 3 pts. No offense, but you dont have no offense. LOL and you are stout against the run but you cant stop the pass.

Come on @Gainesville-Steve, FB scores 48 on Stephenson? Now you’re just being silly. They might get 20 at the most. Now coach Ball may not listen to the sage advice of @Realist123 and myself and actually use his best offensive weapons but the Jags D won’t give up 48 to anyone.

Let’s see what happens Friday vs the Pink Elephants before we get out the anointing oils on the junior Falcons. They got Watson up there but other than that Region 8 is weaker this year than Region 6 by a mile. One dude does not make the region.

Oh, and I wanted to repeat myself for Reggie…pick one QB. Start using your beef up front. Lean on some dudes and run the dang football using your dang D-1 tailback! Just sayin Coach B. So I hope you’re just listening.

@JAB I just think Stephenson totally built for three yards and a cloud of dust. Pass on third down if you have to. Old school football. They got D-1 offensive linemen. Use them!

And for all that is holy Dekalb county football teams, puhleeez have discipline! Stupid lining up offsides. Stupid false starts. And my personal most annoying, jawing after the play or pulling shirt tails and then getting personal foul penalties! 15 yards for free! All that work for nothing! You know how tucker won two state championships? It’s because coach Franklin Stephens came in and shut down the STUPID penalties that cost tucker championships for 10 years before that. Tucker always had talent but they could not shut up and play. You know the best answer for that trash talk? Standing in The Dome with The Trophy and knowing that you are the best. Few know that feeling and it cannot be explained! The best team from Florida to Tennessee! Quite possibly one of the best teams in the USA.

Discipline in the playoffs kids! The football really bounces funny in November and December and if your guy is two yards to the left and the ball bounces two yards to the right you need to make that up by not seeing a yellow flag during the game.

Just my two cents. I hope all the kids have fun and we will see what happens.

@Gomes3000, Stephenson is a very good discipline football team, I agree coaches must spend more time with this, but believe me, most metro area coaches do spend a lot of time talking to their players on this subject. This is not a Dekalb county problem, its a kids problem. These are 15 -18 yrs. old student players, many of the times when this happens, it’s because the heat of the game, I’ve seen unsportsman like penalties in many counties, if these types of penalties is a constant then, there is a problem and it must be addressed by the coaching staff, but I’ve also seen refs throw unsportsman like flags for players holding the ball too long, personal foul penalty thrown on players who made tackles while momentum was in effect etc.

Stephenson & company will be alright, I think Mr. Ball is trying some other things to get ready for the playoffs. In the MAYS game, I agree he probably should’ve establish the run first then commit to passing, but it’s not that they can’t score, it’s a matter of putting together a workable game plan, and they did manager excessive yards against Tucker.

@ rwdekalb, my thoughts exactly, on the contrary Region 8 5A doesn’t have the horseman on their defensive lines like we do. After seeing Mr. Watson play, I can clearly see that, if you put pressure on him or put him on his back a couple of times, a statement could be made by the opposing team. Buford had the athlete’s to do so!

@ itsonlywrite, my assessment of Mr. Watson doesn’t discredit his talents and athleticism; it’s much easily said how to stop him but not easily done, he’s an monster, got my vote for POY Lol., ;)

@Gomez3000, You hit the nail directly on the head!! The top teams from Reg 6 have lights out playing abilities but they diminish this through so many penalties…..and you can’t blame the Refs either. I blame the head coaches…….It’s their teams and they have to establish a culture and stick with it.

You mentioned Frank Stephens. That was one of the biggest compliments you could give a Frank Stephens team; and he didn’t wane for anyone or any player. That is a winning formula for many of our teams. They already have the talent and the skills. Every opposing coach is already well aware of that. Let’s hope Lamar, Gartrell, Jarvis and Allen figures this out.
