Westside of Augusta was forced on Monday to forfeit victories over Cross Creek, Hephzibah, Butler and Harlem because of the inadvertent use of an ineligible player, the GHSA announced.
The result could be a odd playoff situation for the region if games go expected this week and force a three-way tie for third place.
The forfeits drop Westside’s record from 6-3 overall, 3-2 in Region 3-AA, to 2-7, 2-3, and could cost Westside a state-playoff berth. Harlem’s record is now 7-2, 3-2.
Westside could have clinched the third of the four state-playoff berths in 3-AA with a victory this week against Josey (0-9) but now must wait for the results of games involving Screven County (5-4, 3-2) and Harlem (7-2, 3-2).
Westside defeated Screven County and could make the playoffs with the help of tiebreakers.
However, if there is a three-way tie among Westside, Screven and Harlem, the tiebreaker becomes points for and against in the three games involving the three. Harlem now has a 1-0 victory, the standard score from a forfeit. That would eliminate Harlem and put Westside at third, Screven fourth.
