Notable results of week 11: Warner Robins, Mays one win from titles

GHSF Daily’s Chip Saye ranks the most surprising results of Week 11:

1. Warner Robins 28, Northside (Warner Robins) 18: Warner Robins moved within one victory of clinching the title in Region 2-AAAAA by snapping Northside’s 39-game win streak in regular season games. Northside’s last loss in the regular season also came against Warner Robins, on Oct. 30, 2009. Warner Robins leads the all-time series 34-22.

2. Mays 13, Stephenson 9: Mays is in position to win its first region title since 2003 after knocking off Stephenson, which was ranked No. 4 last week and tied with the Raiders for second place in 6-AAAAA. Mays can finish no worse than second place in the region, but a victory against top-ranked and first-place Tucker this week will give the Raiders the title.

3. Marietta 24, North Cobb 21: Ian Shannon kicked a 49-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lead the Blue Devils to an upset of North Cobb, which was undefeated in region play and ranked No. 8 in Class AAAAAA. North Cobb can still clinch the 4-AAAAAA title by beating Campbell this week. Marietta will make the playoffs if it wins at Harrison.

4. Hawkinsville 14, Marion County 10: Hawkinsville won its third consecutive region game after a 1-2 start in 4-A, and the Red Devils ended Marion County’s bid to go 10-0 in the regular season for the second time in three years. Marion County can still clinch its third region title in four seasons with a victory this week against 0-9 Central of Talbotton.

5. Holy Innocents’ 29, Landmark Christian 28: Landmark Christian’s game this week against Eagle’s Landing Christian will determine the champion in Region 5-A, but Holy Innocents’ victory prevented that game from being a matchup of unbeaten teams. Landmark Christian beat the Golden Bears 36-3 last year but trails the all-time series 3-1.

6. Our Lady of Mercy 31, Darlington 28: Our Lady of Mercy picked up the best victory of its 4-5 season by knocking off a Darlington team that clinched the Region 6-A Division A title two weeks ago. This game was arranged when both teams suddenly had an opening on their schedules after Southwest Atlanta Christian decided not to play this season.

7. Swainsboro 19, Jefferson County 17: Swainsboro won for just the second time this season, but for the second week in a row, with an upset of a Jefferson County team that opened the season 6-0 but has lost three consecutive games. A victory this week against Dodge County would give Swainsboro a 3-7 finish for the third straight season.

8. Blessed Trinity 21, St. Pius 20: Two weeks ago, it appeared Blessed Trinity might not make the playoffs out of tough Region 6-AAA. Now the Titans are in position to win the title and can clinch it with a victory against Cedar Grove. St. Pius no longer has a shot at winning its third consecutive region title and still has some work to do to lock up a playoff berth.

9. Veterans 10, Mary Persons 0: Four-year-old Veterans clinched the first region championship in the program’s short history with a shutout of longtime middle Georgia power Mary Persons, which failed in its bid to win its 16th region title. Veterans has won six consecutive games since starting 0-3 against AAAAA teams that will make the playoffs.

10. Evans 26, Lakeside (Evans) 21: Lakeside entered the game with at least a mathematical chance of winning the Region 2-AAAAA title. Now, it’s at least possible that the Panthers could miss the playoffs entirely, although it would take an Evans upset of Northside of Warner Robins for it to happen. Evans can’t make the playoffs if it loses to Northside.

Tucker needs to quit getting penalized like a prison league team. They must have had close to 200 yards in penalties Friday night. Their line coaches need to tape their hands into fists so they don’t get so many holding calls. If they can’t stop the penalties and the sloppy play, they will be the second seed from region 6AAAAA and won’t get anywhere close to the GA Dome.

@ Tired == One way to solve the holding problem is to buy gloves the same color as your opponents jersey. It worked against Lovejoy a few years back in the playoffs when Houston County came to 12 Oaks with powder blue gloves and held Lovejoy all night long.

If your want the 5A crown, then the TUDKER TIGERS will need to be silenced and your “A” game will be needed. It doesn’t matter what other fans have posted/projected/analysis/criticized & hoped, the Tigers will need to be dealt with (period). If you think your team will come into the TIGER den and manhandle Tucker, you will leave VERY disappointed and I85 & I75 north/south, I20 East/West, and the 285 perimeter, is just a stone throw away. People we are not talking about a PROGRAM that just over night appear, while having a GREAT team for a couple of years, and then disappear, the TIGERS have been a PROVEN and qualified contender and STATE champion year after year – this is why TUCKER NATION can state the fact – “WE ARE TUCKER”.

Mays fans – When was the LAST time you beat TUCKER? Don’t hurt yourself, it was 2006 and those kids are close to celebrating their 10 year HS reunion – Don’t mean “A THANG”!!!!

“WE ARE TUCKER” – Currently 9-0 & #1 in the REGION – The Tigers have been RELEASED!!!

Hey Jab,

I was at the Mays/Stephenson game. Can you please tell me why the Jags always come in flat and unmotivated for some of the biggest games in their history. One thing I can honestly say is that I’ve never seen a Jaguar team physically manhandled but they always lose big games because of mental mistakes and lack of effort. It’s like their mind is somewhere else but on the big game. This seems to be the result of a deeper issue! Great teams are able to duplicate a high level of play and execution at all times. They are able to constantly display the proper fundamentals and pay attention and focus on the details not matter what happens on the field! Until Stephenson High is able to do that then that Oh so elusive championship will remain just that! GOOD LUCK WITH THE SECOND SEASON!

@5AReg6Fan, after all that has happened in AAAAA this year, don’t be too over confident, because everybody will be gunning for ya’ll, I still believe that Stephenson is the best team in AAAAA, definitely the best 3rd seat going into AAAAA playoffs. We fans over conversate, I’m probably the biggest in this area. It’s all good and dandy to continue to pump our team up! But after seeing NSWR going down, Gainesville going down and my JAGS going down to other top programs, anything can happen. Now I really don’t see at all MAYS beating Tucker, unless ya’ll have a mental breakdown, but it can happen.

The way ole JAB see it, when the state playoffs begins, there will be 32 hungry AAAAA teams all starting out from square 1, even though, I’m so convince that our region is the toughest in the state; after the 1st round there is a good chance that we will see many surprises week after week, I’ll probably seen the most ever AAAAA teams play this year, whether it be me attending a game or internet/GPB games, in other words, everybody better bring their “A” game…. Ware & Gainesville was not the top ranked teams, but ended up playing for the state titles…

@ High 5, I sat on MAYS side, and the male Fans that I sat around, was like they were calling the game from the stands, I did also but our coaches couldn’t here me. The JAGS made so many mental mistakes like you said, and after the first few stops of Dallas Rivers, I said to myself that guys came to play. They was the 1st team all year long to shut down our running game, I couldn’t believe it! Didn’t know what happen on the 2 yd line and we elected to throw the ball, the receive was open but didn’t catch the ball.

The JAGS defense continue to play tough Football, but our offense continued to make metal mistakes, the play in the 4th qtr., our receiver was wide open, look like the ball hit him right in the pocket clear touchdown, JAGS win, I left that game all choked up, but I’m certain that the JAGS will bounce back come playoff time, I’m probably the only one on this blog, that believes, the JAGS are in a good position to climb the latter to the Dome. My JAGS are too good to be in the position that they are in, but they’ll be alright! “NO PRESSURE”

@ All-American, I don’t have Dallas Rivers Stat, but think he’s up around 600 + yds. The way The JAGS has been doing offense this year, really trying to make that passing game work; but if all goes well he should be a key factor in the playoffs. @ Realist123, my sources are telling me that not true, a kid was shot at Stephenson, some kind of blog joke.

Class AAAAA 11/4/2013 according to the ratings the AJC publishes, as seen elsewhere under high school sports, just in case somebody needs a reminder:

1. (1) Tucker (9-0)
2. (3) Kell (9-0)
3. (5) Gainesville (8-1)
4. (6) Thomas County Central (8-1)
5. (7) Creekside (9-0)
6. (8) Ware County (8-1)
7. (NR) Warner Robins (8-1)
8. (2) Northside-Warner Robins (8-1)
9. (10) North Paulding (8-1)
10. (NR) South Paulding (8-1)

@For Class AAAAA only

MAXPREPS from last week rated each team in ever region and in every class. Looking at only the region AAAAA ratings it is interesting to see how they shake out by region. have a look how the top four from each region look and it gives a pseudo look at ranking the regions and how they relatively matchup during the playoffs.

REG1AAAAA. (Have the Maxpreps, 3rd, 8th, 17th, and 24th….rated teams among its top 4. If you add that up it is a total of 52. The lower the points total the better.

REG2: (1st, 12th, 13th, 15th……total of 41)…….Lowest in the state.

REG3: (16th, 25th, 38th, 47th……total of 126) …Highest or worst in the state.

REG4: (5th, 19th, 20th, 29th….total of 73)

REG5: (10th, 11th, 14th, 21st…total of 56)…….. Had 6 teams all in the top 32, most of any region

REG6: (4th, 7th, 23rd, 33rd….total of 67)…….only 5th best region according to Maxpreps)

REG7: (6th, 32nd, 36th, 37th…total of 111)……..had only 2 teams in the top 32.

REG8: (2nd, 9th, 18th, 27th…total of 56)………

Tells me that when matching up the regions for the first round that:

REG1 (52)….. Should crush REG3 (126)
REG2 (41)……is favored over REG4 (79)
REG5 (56)…..should dominate REG7 (111)
REG8 (56)……is a slight favorite over REG6 (67)

True a lot of factors come into play but I conclude three things from the numbers:
#1- Region 2 has the strongest 4 playoff entries
#2- Region 5 has the most top to bottom parity, because they have 6 of the top 32 teams
#3: Region 6, is NOT the best, toughest or the SEC of GA High School Football…..

Region 6…….. You still hold the title total for largest number of blog participants. :)

@gwinnettdad- using those numbers to rank region 8 over region 6 is silly. 8 has Gainesville and FB. Clarke is weak, only scoring 13 on winder-barrow is weak. Heritage is gonna probably face tucker in the first round, please. Mays might have something going over there but they tend to wet the bed every year. MLK is a mess with talent. Stephenson can’t their offense together but if they can pick a QB they could be dangerous, game ten is a little late to pick a QB. Tucker is the most well rounded team in 6 but have to cut down on stupid penalties. I see region 6 as stronger than region 8. Region 6 is no SEC this year as the bottom is awful but I predict the top three teams will be strong.

Region 1 has TCC but Lee Co is suspect. Region 2 has NSWR and WR. Region 5 has allatoona and north Paulding but that region has yet to show the state anything past round two. Region 3 has Ware and a bunch of teams that beat up on savannah schools. Region 4 has Creekside but other than that region 4 is down this year. Region 7 has Kell but Creekview will be too slow to keep up.

“The” Mays has a very complete team to take out tucker and make a deep run into the playoffs. In my eyes:

Region 6 will best Region 8 3-1 with the one win of course over MLK
Flowery Branch and Clarke are not fast enough to stick with either tucker, stephenson, or “The” Mays so whichever one of those teams match up with them will likely have an easy win

Region 8 will face region 6 and Stephenson and Martin Luther King will have to come north to visit the “real” big boys. Dont take the whupping you are going to get too seriously. We have business to tend to and beating you is expected.
————
Gainesville 60 pts. and a Martin Luther King 12 pts. because you cant kick field goals and Gainesville will run them off the field gasping for breath when D-Wat start running the no-huddle offense. No one in region 6 can handle the no huddle offense.
————
Flowery Branch 48 pts. and Stephenson 3 pts. No offense, but you dont have no offense. LOL and you are stout against the run but you cant stop the pass.
