Marietta scores an upset; Camden, Colquitt set up showdown

Marietta scored the upset of the night in Class AAAAAA on Friday with a victory over eighth-ranked North Cobb. The Blue Devils’ Ian Shannon kicked a 49-yard field with 2 seconds left to win it 24-21.

Though both teams are now 7-2, the outcome oddly didn’t have great significance on the Region 4 standings.

North Cobb (6-1 in region play) can still clinch the title – which would be the school’s fifth in history and first since 2007 – with a victory next week over Campbell (4-5). Meanwhile, Marietta (5-2 in the region) still must beat Harrison (5-3, 4-3) just to make the playoffs as a No. 4 seed.

In other AAAAAA developments …

- No. 1 Colquitt County (31-15 winner over Brunswick) and No. 7 Camden County (28-7 winner over Lowndes) nicely set up their Friday showdown for the Region 1 title.

- Hughes (37-0 winner over Tri-Cities) of Region 3 and Alpharetta (42-20 winner over Centennial) of Region 6 clinched region titles.

- Lassiter moved within one victory of the Region 5 by beating Roswell 17-10. Lassiter (6-3, 5-1) will clinch the title with a win next week against Etowah (7-2, 4-2). Etowah could win the title with a win depending on other region results.

- Archer finished 10-0 with a 34-21 victory over Grayson, but the big news in Region 8 was South Gwinnett’s 30-28 victory over Brookwood. If South (4-5, 3-4) beats Parkview (3-6, 3-4) next week, the loser of the Grayson-Brookwood game will be out of the playoffs. Those two schools had won every Region 8 title since 2004.

Congratulations to the Pack. As hard and miserable as it was, This old man forced himself to brave the rain to see what was probably the last 6A game to be played in Jardine stadium. I will still travel and support the Trojans at Valdosta but I am so looking forward to the playoffs so I can root for Region 16A.

It’s hard to be a Coffee fan.

CoffeeC100 don’t get your hopes up about moving anywhere in Classification. The numbers are in and per the authorities, Coffee’s numbers are down, but the State Board is considering creation of a higher classification than 6A, meaning that the only schools that might move up are Camden (if the Mag. school don’t open before next year) and Lowndes….Coffee’s creation of the “Alternative High School” may not have worked out like our leaders may have hoped for…. those numbers do count!

Congratulations to the Tigers of Archer !!! They really shown a LOT.. Being very new to the spotlight & going on the road (well, not really a long drive, per se but you know what I mean) & beating a good (not great, but good) Grayson team by 2 TD’s… This team will make some noise in the playoffs.

Show down in 6AAA between Buford at North Hall… Buford will win by 28…. On a side note – Buford just tied Camden for the most wins by 60+…

Gonna be a big showdown in Region 1 next weekend!! Congrats to both for big wins & making a statement, (Camden especially! 21 point win over Lowndes…)

North Cobb = pretender & will get bounced in round 1 or 2….

Lowndes has not muffed any punts or kicks all year until last night. For whatever reason..we just seem to have a muff punt/kick curse lately against camden. 3 special teams errors and it was 21-0 before i took a deep breath last night. The loss was not on lowndes defense, they stiffled camden most of the game, camden only only had one lengthy drive the whole game, the rest was very short fields set up by our muff punts/kicks. Take those away and this game may still be going. Up 21-7 with under 6 min to go our defense through in the towel and camden scored again on a meaningless td. Hats off to camden, they came out ready and we didnt. I still think we are going to have a shot in the playoffs and here is why. Literally, the diff in the game last night was the special teams errors by lowndes, it was a relatively even game other than that for the most part. I went to the game, camden 74 did not so it doesnt not matter what anyone says , i saw it live and no exacltly what happened. Lowndes is capable of making a run in playoffs, we just cant afford to make those kinda mistakes against good teams bc our offense is not elite. Camdens defense is good , but not great. Colquitt will score 3 tds on them at least most likely. we had guys wide open on pass plays twice and one time ball was slightly overthrown and the other it was underthrown which resulted in a pic. We came out of halftime down 21-7 and had great field position, we were on camdens 44 yd line after a first down run of 7 yds which set up 2nd and 3 and instead of running for another first down, we try and go deep and had a guy open , just underthrew him and it was picked off. That to me was the opportunity we had to get back in game. We had the momentum and blew it. O well, hats off to camden. Lowndes will be on road in rd 1 and we have a shot bc our d is good enough to carry the team.

bk always love reading your posts. Not a fan of either Lowndes or Camden but love reading the different excuses of why you didn’t win. Even with muffed punts and short fields you give up touchdowns and not hold them to field goals. Your D that is so good throws in the towel. Yeah that will take you a long way in the playoffs.

Bksmith14, you are right. However, the same can also be said on the Camden side. There were at least 3 plays Camden had a guy deep and overthrew him. Camden’s QB can’t throw very well. We also had a score called back due to a penalty. Penalties killed Camden. They still haven’t figured that out. If there is a team in 6A more penalized than Camden, I would love to know who. You can always say, “what if.” I assure you, Camden has had a lot of the what ifs against Ccolquitt over the last couple of seasons. We shall see what happens Friday night.

Congrats to the Langston Hughes Panthers for their second consecutive region title!!! Not bad for a 5 year old school with a group that was picked to finish dead last and third in the region standings the past 2 years. If we are going to be successful in the playoffs, we can’t have another effort like we had last night. Even though we got another shut-out by the defense and managed to score over 35 points, we were very sloppy in all 3 phases of the game. Time to turn it up Panthers!!! The 2nd season is coming!!!.

Bksmith14. I was there and saw it live. Lowndes offense was anemic at best. Camden’s defense only gave up 94 yards the whole game and that Lowndes score came as a result of a muffed put by Camden on their 21 yard line. Yes You could say Lowndes “stiffled” Camden’s offense, Camden Avg 288 yds rushing, they had 268 last night and 34 yds passing for 325 yds of total offense. Also Camden had an interception return for a touchdown called back due to a penalty. You still have to score to win. Field goals will not get it done in the playoffs. Lowndes has to do better on offense and shore up the middle of the field. I will give you the speed on the edges, but most of Camden’s yards came from up the middle of the defense, they had that 32 yard sprint on the edge, other than that run, Lowndes had the speed to keep Camden off of the edge. Maybe Lowndes should not have had the check in the box on their sign. I saw Camden doing what they do, run the ball and control the clock, as I said in posts leading up to this game, who ever flinched, turn the ball over would lose. Have to be honest though, did not think this would be a more than 2 touchdown loss for any team. Well Friday in Camden County will be huge, I am going to call in a favor to get me a ticket for that one. Colquitt/Camden region title on the line. Camden won region title in first year last year, even though some on these posts did not see Camden County compete ting in region 1 for a couple of years or so.

Camden has led a charmed life with regards to turnovers so far this year. They will be exposed soon as a some what average offense with zero passing game and poor special teams. The defense is above average against the run but terrible against a decent passing team. This wasn’t suppose to be the year we have over achieved.

Under 100 yards of total offense by the vaunted Lowndes wing-T. To the Lowndes fans, you had a 6′3″ wide receiver on a 5′6″ corner back. You threw the ball to him ZERO TIMES. Your coach threw in the towel at halftime when he refused to call a play with 25 seconds left on the clock. His play calling is lacking to say the least. He shut the pass down after your qb threw and interception, but you guys were still down and could have made something happen. Camden is susceptible to the pass and you guys did not capitalize. I guess the coaches left the CHECK book at home last night. For those that were not there, Lowndes had already checked Camden off as a VICTORY on there introduction sign.

@Packeracker – There seems to be conflicting opinions on the subject. Coffee has opened an “Alternative school” that provides graduating seniors a chance to go directly into the workforce earning a very respectable salary. Nursing, telecommunications, etc. The new school is taking approx. 250 students from Coffee County High. Combined with move-outs that will drop Coffee into 5A as it stands today.

I have personally spoken to administration officials who assure me the students will not count toward Coffee County enrollment. Thus the drop to 5A.

GM1957 obviously has information that says they will count toward total enrollment. So I guess we wait and see.

There is also scuttlebutt that the GHSA is going to add a 7th class, 7A. If that is so the schools that are currently in 6A will be split. Some staying in 6A. Some moving up to 7A.

So. Who knows what is going to happen? I guess we just wait and see. Regardless. 1-6A will most likely not look the same next year.

The state doesn’t need to dilute the talent levels any more than they already have. If they split up AAAAAA into two classifications each will have around 40 teams each. A champion wouldn’t have much of a realm to rule over.

@rockdale observer – I suppose they are working on it now. I looked back at some old AJC posts and an article in the Gainseville newspaper and it appears that the GHSA announced the initial realignments for 2012-2013 on December 6, 2011. So. With that it mind I assume they will announce the 2014-1015 region realignments around the 1st of December this year. Appeals will follow that before final decisions a couple of months later. The initial realignments are usually pretty much adhered to though. Good luck with your wishes.

5-Time….I hadn’t heard Brunswich was leaving either. Were they just going to a lower classification or is something else up?

Interesting stuff indeed. I’m not sure where my mighty Packers would fall under the new classifications and what exactly is the reason for a change? We’ve only been R1 6A with 6 teams for 2 seasons…right? So what’s the problem???

CoffeeC100

November 3rd, 2013

@PackerBacker – Research in Florida and Texas where there are as many as nine regions indicate that serious injuries such as broken bones and serious concussions as well as the numbers of significant injuries decrease dramatically when players tend to play other players their own size and strength. It is only logical that a larger school will, on the average, field a heavier, stronger team than a smaller school.

Therefore the more classes of football in a state the greater the chance of teams in that class fielding similar athletes on the average and the less the chance of serious injury.

Of course that still will not solve the Buford problem. The GHSA needs to address the recruiting problem as well.

I have said from the beginning that Lowndes and Valdosta are suffering from subpar play at the QB position, but it hurts Lowndes much more because of the need of a dual threat within the Wing T.

Sportsnut……I will say this AGAIN! There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Wing-T. If it’s run correctly, it’s UNSTOPPABLE!!!! But you need to have a dual threat QB to get EVERYTHING out of it. @ 74 == It is out-dated. You will not have comeback capability. As you constantly told me, discipline will cost you. Camden seems to have a problem with that. Fix it or you won’t last long.

Camden74

November 3rd, 2013
2:46 pm

Sportsnut…..You’re correct as far as the discipline problem is concerned. But it has nothing to do with the Wing-T. As far as comebacks are concerned, they’ve already had comebacks running the Wing-T! Just like the Spread, you need certain personnel to run it properly. With the Wing-T, if you have a dual threat QB, if doesn’t matter about getting behind. Camden’s present QB is actually a pretty good passer. He just doesn’t have a lot of experience passing! Before this season, he had never started a varsity game. So, due to the fact that he did not have much playing time in the last few years, he’s had to gain experience over the course of the season. He’s actually had to learn how to pass from the Wing-T at game speed, during the games. I believe he’s done a pretty good job, considering what happened in the season opener. The Wing-T is AWESOME! You’ll have a different view of the Wing-T, soon. RELEASE the CATS!!!! :-D

@No Dog In The Fight, you really should know your lack of information shows your ignorance. Have you ever been to Moultrie? Moultrie is my home and is located in a county of 40000 people. We have a county wide school system that is completely supportive of our beloved Packers. We do not cheat, nor does our coach. We have a number of employers in our county. We are home to the nation’s premier agricultural exposition and many of our citizens have returned home after college to serve to further strengthen our community. Also, if you add up the combined populations of the towns within a 45 min. radius, our region of southwest Georgia is the second largest population area in the State, second only to Atlanta. Of course, we plan to return to Atlanta in mid December when we play for the State Championship. There are two kinds of fans, Packer fans and those who wish they were.

I know that this high school football is very unpredictable as we’re dealing with teenage athletes, but barring turnovers, I predict my Packers will roll into Camden County and smother the wing-T.

This Pack D is the best we’ve had in recent years. Plenty of size, speed, hard hitting, swarm the ball carrier and smart-to-boot. Camden’s power, speed sweep want run up and down the field and our linebackers will chase them down from sideline to sideline or if you prefer they will bring you to an abrupt halt up the middle. If Camden scores, it will be off a turnover or long play or special team play. I’ll be surprised if they have any long extended drives.

As far as the Packer O is concerned, we have plenty of weapons to put up at-least 24 on the board.
