Tucker 60, M.L. King 34

Behind four Duke Shelley touchdowns – two on kickoff returns, one on an interception and another on a 43-yard reception – Class AAAAA No. 1 Tucker defeated M.L. King 60-34.

Shelley’s four touchdowns covered a total of 219 yards, as he made an impact on all facets of the game. And he wasted no time in starting the onslaught.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Shelley grabbed an errant Roland Rivers pass and scampered 30 yards into the end zone to put Tucker (9-0, 8-0 in Region 6-AAAAA) out in front.

That was the launch of quite a night for the junior, in a game where the two teams traded big plays and key turnovers, though only Tucker could seem to take advantage of those.

The biggest example of that came late in the third quarter, with the Lions (6-3, 6-2) down 39-28. Tucker’s Elijah Sullivan fumbled near the 50-yard line, and MLK’s Chaka Diarrassouba returned it to the Tucker 11 to give the Lions a chance to get back to within striking distance.

But, without a reliable field-goal kicker, MLK ran four plays, going backward to the 13 and got no points out of the great field position. That was the last of three Tucker turnovers, and the Lions didn’t score on any of them.

On the other side, Tucker forced four MLK turnovers – all Rivers interceptions, and all in the first half – and turned those into 14 points that could have proven the difference in the fourth quarter.

For Tucker, Shelley’s big night overshadowed a very efficient, impressive night for quarterback Joseph Farrar.

He only had four completions, but three of them were 43-, 27- and 22-yard touchdown passes, and he had a number of savvy run plays to post a game-high 124 rushing yards and another score.

His counterpart was almost the exact opposite, throwing the ball 50 times to Farrar’s 9, while throwing 4 touchdowns but matching that with 4 interceptions. He finished 22 of 50 for 444 yards, but he also finished with just 6 rushing yards in the face of a relentless Tucker pass rush.

Rivers usually did well when he had time to stand in the pocket and throw, but the almost complete lack of a running game – MLK finished with a total of 7 rushing yards – allowed a fast, talented Tucker defense to key on the pass.

Rivers completed passes to 10 different receivers, and had five completions of more than 40 yards. Shumake led all receivers with 156 yards and a touchdown on 5 catches.

MLK                6          14       8          6 – 34

Tucker            7          23       9          21 – 60

T – Duke Shelley 30 INT return (Eric Webber kick)

GREAT JOB TUCKER!!! HATS OFF TO YALL FOR BEING THE BETTER TEAM AND PUTTING KING ON THEIR BACK!!

I NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER SEEN KING GET TAKEN OUT LIKE THAT NOR HAVE I SEEN SUCH SLOPPY MESSES ON BAD COACHING AND BAD QUARTERBACKING!!

It was a game of offense until TUCKER shut down the pass IN THE 4th with defense!!! Ive been shouting all yr from the sideline that MLK should as well run a 3-4 defense and if not at least put 2 safeties in the backfield!! This game was a very rude awakening and very much so a wakeup call to any in vote that we need NEW COACHING NEXT YR!!! LIKE I TOLD STEPHENSON FANS, Im not gonna sit on excuses all night because GOD knows their are 1000 of reasons i can list on why we lost, but instead ill say TUCKER WINS AND RIGHTFULLY SO deserves to be region champ…THIS YEAR LOL ..Next coming yrs if yall still decide to maintain in our region then we shall put our cards on the table.. WAY TO EVEN THE SERIES 1-1 on a convincing beatdown.. TONIGHT YALL MADE HISTORY!! The first team ever to beat KING BY 60!! LIVE IT UP BECAUSE IT WONT HAPPEN TWICE neither will a victory over KING NEXT YR!!

we looked terrible and i believe without a doubt we could’ve beaten tucker with better coaches. These guys suck as coaches. Also i want to see if MLK actually fire Coach Allen for going in stands to fight a person who yelled out he Sucks. You just gave up the most points in school history and then because somebody in stands yells Cortez Allen you suck. Dude comes up the stadium to fight the person, really Coach. he should be fired Monday Morning. I cant wait to see what happens with this one. We maybe in jeopardy of making the playoffs also very sad. Our program has taken few steps back. Dekalb with all this nepotism, should have never been hired.

@MLK PARENT You did not lose the game on coaching. It is always a easy cop out to blame a lost on a coach! The coach didn’t throw 4 picks or gave up 2 special teams touchdowns or bad punting snaps! MLK made some big plays and Tucker made more big plays! Just couldn’t get stops and you don’t have a kicker! With a kicker, this may have been a different outcome. Coaching had nothing to do with this lost at all! The game was way closer than the 60-34 score! 39-34 in the fourth and you were a stop away from potentially taking the lead! The coach didn’t miss that tackle!

MLK has a new coaching staff this year, fact is NO ONE wanted the job! Dekalb is NOT attractive at all for Top Head Coaches in Football. Given all of MLK’s success in the school history, you had NO big names jumping at the chance. MLK is not as well coached now with the new staff, preparation and adjusting during the game was what they excelled at. I heard the kicker it not playing do to grades, so that’s why they have no kicking game now. If you don’t think MLK lost this game due to coaching, you have NOT seen the previous teams from MLK, and that is a fact. This team is just not sharp at all, they are talented, but that is all as of now unless they improve as a staff. The players from both played hard, that’s something positive to take away from this game.

@MLK PARENT – Get a grip!. I am sick of hearing people complain about coaching. Coaching is more than Xbox or playstation. Most of the people complaining about coaching have a resume that consists of Madden. It is a cop out. I do believe that great coaching makes a difference in HS football but football still has to be played on the field.

Tucker has had to replace multiple coaches over the past 15yrs and the program has consistently won and gone deep into the playoffs. Coach Lamar and Coach Stephens were available during at least one of your recent coaching changes but I am confident that people like you would have wanted to run them out of town because you “think” that you know more about coaching. Get a grip and realize that your attitude is part of the problem with the program.

@Tuckertown Man You are incorrect, since Tucker just hired Lamar last year, he was not available. After Kenny Barrow left MLK for Mundy’s Mill, they hired Corey Jarvis who came from south ga, just like Stephens did. That was also there first year in class 5 a, as they came up from 3 a. Coach Jarvis did an excellent job at MLK, but left due to no help from the county at all. Do you understand that NO one applied for the MLK job? Also not surprising that NO one applied for SWD either, but then again may have been done on purpose… Anyway you have to pay attention to how important coaching is, you should know better than anyone. Bill Ballard had you all in the Semi’s but that was as far you went, Stephens won you championships, Lamar has to prove he can do the same. You can’t down play coaching especially in the playoffs.

Just went to checkout Mr. Deshaun Watson, and like I said on another post, he is everything AJC has said him to be, the guy looks like a 3 year NFL players, he’s big, an accurate passer, and can run the ball. CAM NEWTON, eat your heart out! I’m glad Gainesville is on ya’ll side of the bracket, Stephenson wont see him until the Dome, if they makes it there… Remember when the state playoffs starts it’s 0 – 0, and Gainesville didn’t win their region last year but won the state, what a motivator JAGS.

@ any moron that thinks its not about coaching, you have no idea what you are talking about. Discipline, knowing your assignments, accountability, game planning, strategy, preparation, adjustments etc. its all about coaching. It is much more than making tackles and catching passes and not throwing interceptions, it about playing to the strength of your players and putting them in position to be successful. With out coaching a very good quarterback like Rivers will continue to make the same mistakes he made the first game of the season, not checking down to the running back who has been open out of the backfield all year in fact he is still open now. Not the QB fault he is not being taught. For the record this is not the same coach from last year Cortez Allen got the job on the hook up and who ever hooked him up Dr. Pringle should be fired too. All you need to know about Cortez Allen is that after the game he had to be restrained by police for running into the stands to fight a fan for shouting the obvious. Discipline, Accountability, respect… no its has to do nothing with coaching… if it was me he would be gone before he took his seatbelt off to exit his car on Monday. Do you know how many opportunities you loose for these kids trying to go to college by having this kind of behavior exhibited from your head Coach? At this point it is beyond X’s and O’s Tucker is this much better than MLK my arse!!

MLK and Tucker. Both teams have very good young men playing the hearts out. The biggest issue was good special teams for one team and poor for the other

Tucker did not miss a Pat kick, one bad snap. A FG made, a safety, good punts and 2 TDs on kickoff, which equals about 23 points and 5 touch backs on kickoff. That was sound special teams

MLK kick offs were inconsistent, no pat attempted 2 snaps over the punters head

It’s tough to overcome those issues

Not having a place kicker changes the entire calculus of the game. 1st and goal at the opponent’s ten becomes automatic 4-down territory? Extra points can’t be attempted? What a way to go through a potentially close game. MLK got what they deserved. Congratulations, Tucker.

Oh, and the penalties on MLK. That points to an undisciplined team, or at least one that’s not used to the spotlight. It just snowballed on them.

To their credit – they played well. You just can’t play half a game and expect to beat Tucker.

@Mighty Lion King, you are a class act.

I enjoyed the game tonight. Nice to see Tucker peaking at the right time. BTW, MLK, you have no reason to hang your heads. You played your hearts out tonight and really helped Tucker recognize where some of our weaknesses against the pass are. Very good passing QB in Mr. Rivers. Too bad he is a senior. I hope you have another waiting in the wings. #23 is special too.

By the way, I agree with you King fans that you have a coaching problem for several reasons:

1) 9th game of the season and no Kicker….so the coaches gave up on developing someone else?
2) Your QB is your best asset if you utilize #33. Why only use him in the red zone?
3) Tucker held MLK to 7 rushing yards. The coach should have known this by half-time at least.
4) No adjustments after the half. MLK ran no “real” plays. Just snap and pass.
5) No use of your running game….why?? You have a good trio of backs and a beast in #33.
6) The team is allowed to celebrate too much on big “non-scoring” plays. Demand better discipline.

7) If the reports about going into the stands and being restrained are true, then cut bait! Those kids
deserve better.

If you make the playoffs I hope your coaches use a running game. You have a helluva huge line and there should be no reason why you couldnt mix it up. Your QB would be more successful.

Congrats Tucker.

To Mlks credit, they did come to play. Mlk Qb made some incredible throws. Mlk offensive line played much better in pass protection than they have in past games. Mlk has a solid defense against the run. Tucker showed again tonight that they can beat you in many ways not just with running game. This turned into a close game in 4th qt but then Tucker was able to stay poised and make the big plays to put Mlk away. I heard some fans in attendance praise Mlks performace but in the same breath say watch Mlk find a way to lose. That ugly word undisciplined showed up again for Mlk. Tucker did not play a flawless game penalty wise either but Tucker knows themselves better as a team and was able to execute their offense when the game was on the line.

I think both teams played well and that both have some work to do with regards to penalties and turnovers. In my mind the big difference was special teams. When you are playing the number 1 team you can’t continue to snap the punt over the head of the kicker, you can’t concede extra points and field goals, and you can’t give up the special teams touchdowns. I have no problem with the on the field coaching but I do think the coach has to accept responsibility for not developing a second kicker and long snapper. MLK, like Stephenson, has a very very good team. In all honesty the game was a lot closer than the score. I’m a Tucker fan and I will be the first to encourage both squads by the fact that we won a state championship after having lost a game. The thing is to get behind the coaches and team and push them to get better. After having watched these three teams (Tucker, MLK, Stephenson) play each other there is no doubt in my mind (outside of the fact that MLK does not have good special teams) that any of these teams could just as easily as the other win the state championship.
