List/Trivia/Quote: Valdosta maintains healthy lead in all-time victories

LIST

Cairo won its 600th game last week in a 35-7 victory over Americus-Sumter. The Syrupmakers have played football since 1922. The school’s victories were researched by Harold Walker for the Cairo Messenger. The all-time ranking of Georgia schools with their victory totals is sketchy. The Georgia High School Football Historians Association has attempted to document all scores through history. Scores are largely complete back to World War II, but those schools with longer histories usually are missing some scores. Here are the schools with the most victories recorded by the GHSFHA. Note that some schools that underwent consolidation (chiefly Lincoln County, Colquitt County, Washington-Wilkes and Americus-Sumter) have separate football histories in GHSFHA records.

857 – Valdosta

712- Gainesville

683 – Thomasville

653 – Marist

627 – Carrollton

610 – LaGrange

608 – Cartersville

606 – Thomson

600 – Cairo

599 – Dalton

597 – Statesboro

TRIVIA

Which Georgia school has the most football victories among schools that no longer exist? (Answer Monday)

Answer to Thursday’s question: The active coaches have won state titles as a head coach and a player in Georgia are Hal Lamb of Commerce (player) and Calhoun (coach) and Eric Parker of Mitchell-Baker (player) and Burke County (coach).

COACH SPEAK

“Football is a process. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

- Harris County coach Tommy Parks

GHSF Daily asked coaches during the offseason if they have a favorite quote, saying or motto. We’ll run a different one each day. Coaches are invited to add to our list.

Max agree, RE Lee Rebels class of 1958 had the Great Coach Jim Calvin. The man changed my life and I’m so thankful. We need more Coaches like him.

Another maybe Waycross HS Bulldogs……

Hope all teams have great games tonight..GHSA #1

I was wondering why Gainesville wasn’t on this list. So, I went to the GHSFHA website and lo and behold it states that Gainesville has 712 victories, which would place them second on the list behind Valdosta. The AJC coverage of high school football has improved this year (meaning they actually cover it), but it is strictly amatuerish. Is this a full time job for these writers?

Thanks, LakeDawg. Not for the endorsement, but for the tip. I’ve added Gainesville.

Me’s think the trivia answer is my Alma mater – the Blue Devils of Avondale… State Champs ‘76 – Class of ‘77…. We were a force back “in the Day”….

Also my Alma mater, Avondale has 367 victories according to GHSFHA which is 2 greater than RE Lee. But Avondale started in 1949 wereas RE Lee has records back to 1905. I was a “Subbie” back in 76 when we won the State. The 60’s and 70’s were a good time to be a Blue Devil. Avondale went 101-10 from 1960-1969 and 88-22-2 from 1970-1979. That is a pretty impressive run.

If you consolidate Moultrie High (321), Moultrie High for Negro Youth (19), and Colquitt County High School (257), we would be right at 597 wins as a program.

Shout out to ya SWGA –

We had a lotta fun defending the “Flying A” atop the gym then!! We were every schools top rival then.. (much like Buford is now.. lol) We were also state runner up in baseball my Sr season (my bro played CF).. We had a great wrestling program under legendary Brian Hage. I played football, wrestled & tennis – I know, a weird trifecta back then.

We were BIG BLUE before Michigan!! LOL

@ Lil Brother was it the waycross bulldogs? I always thought it was the gators.. A fact the Florida gators old football stadium was called THE SWAMP way.. way before floida stole it and named their football stadium the same….. FACT.. AND WAYCROSS WAS THE HOME OF THE AUTHOR/CREATOR OF Smoky The Bear…. just thought I’d pass that info along. I do remember when I was in jrhigh, Ware Co. was The Waycross gators I think… and then just like Colquitt C. was The Moultrie ?? and change it to Colquitt Co. Packers…

Stephen Drew that plays for the World Series champions, as well as his brother JD drew, both went and graduated from Lowndes High. In 1999 they both played on the state championship team.. We (Lowndes) won both the 5a state football championship as well as the 5a baseball state championship team. Great year for Lowndes. Jay Ratliff was in the football team at the time, and went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys. Lately plagied with injuries Dallas let him go this year. and Randall Godfrey as well went to Lowndes and as well played for the Dallas Cowboys for about 10-15 years… Just wanting to brag on our athletes who were also great role models, and wanting to brag a bit on our Mighty Might Vikings…. we still have chance, although not the best team we have ever had but we are assured of 3rd seed in the playoffs, against the 2nd seed out of region 3….. that is as of right now….

LOL….I went to school with J.D. Drew back in 94!! He would always be working on his forearms. (I see why now). So basically, I was working out with a future MLB Star and didn’t even know it!!Just thought I would share that story…
