What to watch Friday: North Cobb, Alpharetta close in on region titles

North Cobb and Alpharetta can clinch region tiles with victories on Friday.

In Region 4, North Cobb (7-1, 6-0) and junior quarterback Tyler Queen (1,530 yards passing) are at home against Marietta (6-2, 4-2). North Cobb has won five straight in the series. It would be the school’s fifth region title, first since 2007.

In Region 6, Alpharetta (6-2, 5-0) and junior quarterback Austin King (1,568 yards passing) are at Centennial (1-7). Alpharetta is after its second region title, first since 2011.

Lovejoy (8-1) in Region 2 and Hughes (7-1) in Region 3 also can clinch Friday, but only if their second-place teams lose.

Other things to watch this week in AAAAAA:

- Lowndes (7-2, 4-1) plays at Camden County (7-1, 4-0) in the top Region 1 game. Lowndes coach Randy McPherson is 2-5 all-time against Camden County. No other Georgia school has beaten him more than three times. Camden County can win its 13th consecutive region title (second straight in 1-AAAAAA) by beating Lowndes this week and Colquitt County next. Lowndes can finish no worse than second with a victory over Camden but probably won’t win the region because of the 37-7 loss to Colquitt County on Sept. 27. The 30-point spread puts the Vikings at a tiebreaker disadvantage.

- Also in Region 1, the loser of Friday’s Valdosta-Brunswick game is not looking good for the playoffs. Brunswick (3-5, 1-3) is 0-6 all-time against Valdosta (5-3, 1-3), but the Wildcats will be sweating this one.

- Mill Creek (5-3, 3-3) can expect to beat Habersham Central (0-9) this week, but the Hawks will become the best team in the state that won’t make the playoffs unless there’s a major upset in Region 7 – either Duluth (2-6, 2-4) over Collins Hill (7-1, 4-2) or Meadowcreek (1-7, 1-5) over Peachtree Ridge (6-2, 4-2). According to the computer Maxwell Ratings, the region has five of the top 14 teams in AAAAAA. Only four can make the playoffs.

- Archer (9-0, 7-0) has wrapped up Region 8, but a convincing victory over Grayson (4-4, 4-2) might help the Tigers – the only unbeaten team in AAAAAA – get more respect. They would become the first team ever to beat Brookwood, Parkview and Grayson in the same season.

- Walton (4-4, 3-2) has missed the playoffs only once (2009) in the past 12 seasons, but the Raiders need to beat Etowah (7-1, 4-1) to keep fate in their hands. The other big game in Region 5 is Milton (6-2, 3-2) versus Cherokee (5-3, 3-2).

Kickoff at Camden is 7:30. We are used to an 8:00 game start. I hope the fans don’t drag around getting to the Bottom Right Hand Corner.

This will sound very crazy , but what would happen to the 1st seed spot in the event of camden looses to lowndes and camden beats colquitt in a tight game? Would there be three way tie or colquit gets 1st seed?

@ Option…I believe it goes like this, if there is a 3 way tie, the team with the least amount scored against them by the other playoff teams would get #1…2nd goes to the next to the least, etc.

The marquee game this week in Region 4 is Marietta at North Cobb. A victory by North Cobb would give Coach Queen two region championships in the six years he has been at North Cobb. The matchup features a pair of talented quarterbacks as well as two gifted running backs. Marietta has only lost to Hillgrove and McEachern who both ranked in many polls.

@packerchick and option – If there is a 3-way tie in region 1…a la…Lowndes, Colquitt and Camden…then the team with the most points scored against them by the 4 playoff teams…would claim the 3rd seed. The remaining 2 teams would simply go to head to head to determine the 1 and 2 seeds.

For packerchick….Colquitt MUST beat Camden in order to claim the No.1 seed.

@Rufus Did you mean the most points scored by the other region teams not included in the tie, instead of the 4 playoff teams?

Rufus S. DeMann

@Option – No, it’s only points scored against you by Playoff teams. In a 3-way tie…Lowndes is really hurting at this juncture. Colquitt MUST beat Camden to win the Region No.1 seed. They can’t do it any other way.

I’ll be at the North Cobb Marietta game tomorrow. It look forward to finally seeing North Cobb in person while cheering on the Blue Devils. If I was going to the Georgia Florida game, I would defiinately catch the Lowndes and Camden game. I’ve always wanted to go see a region 1 game in person vs region opponents without my team playing

@Marietta fan= You really would enjoy it. By now the game is usually sold out but if you were in the stands for the Camden/Lowndes game you could feel the crazy wild atmosphere and you would just be in aww for real. this game will be very hard hitting and will be like a state championship game. Next week when Colquitt come it will be the same way but more intense because if Camden wins then next week will be for the region title and you talk about a special atmosphere. But good luck to Marietta tomorrow, u guys have a tough one ahead of u

@wildhawg2012 I did go to Lowndes last year and Camden the year before that. I realized the whole town/county really does show. Our whole town shows for home games but nowhere near as much as region 1. I might go to North Cobb vs Colquitt/Camden/Lowndes in round 2 if Marietta is out, but I also expect GPB to pick that game up no matter who NC plays.

Randy McPherson maybe 2-5 against Camden Co., but those 2 wins were special. Because in those 2 wins, Lowndes went on to win the State Title!! In SHUTOUT FASHION!! In 2004, Lowndes DOMINATED Camden in the playoffs, defeating them 33-0. Then, in 2007, Lowndes shut Camden out again 10-0, enroute to their 5th State Title!!

I recall Coach Herron speaking about that game in an article back in 2009. He said that 33-0 drubbing Lowndes put on Camden in the dome was the first time in his career he’s seen Camden get DOMINATED like that. He said, I’ve never seen Camden get DOMINATED like that before…

North Cobb fan…. We can be real explosive if we’re not shooting ourselves in the foot. Kirvonte Benson will probably be a big time running back for the class of 2015. He is a state champion in track but is also very powerful. He dragged 5 South Cobb guys 10 yards to the end zone last week. We also like to get the ball in Jordan Mathis’ hands either on a screen or end around. When our offense struggles, we’re either getting penalized or the QB holds the ball to long and gets sacked. Penalties is what cost us the Hillgrove game. We lead 13-7 with 10 minutes left and couldn’t hold it. We are way better on defense than last year. Ty Tomlin is commited to UNC and is our most physical player. Our kicker is a weapon. Almost every kickoff is a touchback and he has a 45 yd punt average. He’s also made 9 FGs with a long of 50. If we have any advantage it’s in the kicking game.

@ Marietta fan,

Last year out kicking game was top-notch. This year, not as much but it’s getting better. The reason why I’d say we are better this year is because we have more playmakers than last year. Our skill position guys are 2nd to none.

It’s not a surprise that the two teams that stand out the most to him in his career all came from Valdosta, GA………Lowndes & Valdosta!! I wouldn’t have had it any other way either!! Don’t you agree?!…

You have got to know, that when Camden and Lowndes were beating on each other in the playoffs you were watching the state championship those years, without the two teams being in each others way Camden and Lowndes both would have won a couple more state titles.

In 2003 Camden beat Lowndes twice by 7 pts. The 2003 Camden Team had the best D in Camden HISTORY, maybe even in the State, I think the record books support this claim. In 2004 Lowndes thumped us in the dome. Then it went back and forth with Lowndes going through Camden or Camden through Lowndes to win a few titles. Tonight will be fun………….. Region 1 football is great this time of year.

And those TWO WINS were very special!! I strongly suggest you read through posts thoroughly and carefully before submitting yours…

@ North Cobb Fan Marietta is very explosive on offense and they have very good linebackers. Ty Tomlin is one of the best I have seen in a long time. He is physical and has a lot of speed. I think their defensive line is the weakest part of their team. They are smaller than their linebackers. They will not be able to get any pressure on Queen, which is bad news for Marietta fans. We actually ditched the screen game and lined up with two backs and ran the ball in the 3rd and 4th quarters against them and were successful, imagine that Hillgrove not throwing screen passes that everyone knows is coming!!!! Forgive me, I got off track for a second!

PSA to the Region 1 fans, do not misunderstand what I am saying; I am in no way comparing it to your rivalry games, but the Hillgrove/McEachern game is quickly becoming one of the best rivalries north of Macon. Lot of fan support and several D1 players on the field.

Lime Sink predicts the following:

Valdosta will handle Brunswick tonight. They will control the ball and the line of scrimmage. Their pass defense…bolstered by their pass rush…will slow Mr. Dixon down. Yellow Cats win with ease and collect the 4th seed for their dedication….35-14 Valdosta.

Lowndes will upset the Bluecats tonight…but it won’t be easy. Tough, tough ballgame that comes down to hard-nosed defense against the run…which the Vikings have in spades. Might be a FG difference…but Lime sink is prognosticating 17-7 Lowndes.

My bunch of poor, tiny, little, undersized Hawgs will trail the hometown Trojans for 3 quarters or so…BUT…the Cardiac Pack will find a way to tie the game up in the 4th…more than likely thru the efforts on No.22. Then…with 5 seconds remaining in the game…Mr. Vega will slam a 38 yard FG thru and true to win the contest for the Good Guys. Gospel……

Let’s keep everybody healthy for the playoffs….and as always…

GO YOU HAIRY HAWGS !!!!!

@hhawkfan,

If Marietta can’t get pressure up front, then you’re right it will be tough stopping Queen and the boys. North Cobb is capable of putting up a high number. Especially when you let them get in rhythm. Hillgrove did a good job vs NC in the 2nd half of their game, only problem was Hillgrove couldn’t score either LOL. In my opinion, Hillgrove is just a few players away from being really good. In regards to Marietta, they have a shot tonight to prove their worth. But if North Cobb plays good they are gonna beat anybody. North Cobbs Runningbacjs Vs Marietta’s Linebackers will be a fun matchup to watch.
But like I said, if you don’t have a good D-Line, NC will have their way with you.

“Lovejoy (8-1) in Region 2 and Hughes (7-1) in Region 3 also can clinch Friday, but only if their second-place teams lose” – TH

Lovejoy will have to score more points than they did this Friday, or else they will not win ANY playoff games.. At least their defense did not give up many points.
