Stephenson ends M.L. King’s title hopes; Mundy’s Mill, Creekside win subregions

Here are some of the items of note from Friday’s Class AAAAA games:

- Stephenson ended M.L. King’s hopes of a fourth consecutive region championship by rallying in the fourth quarter for a 10-6 victory in a 6-AAAAA game. Stephenson was led by Dallas Rivers, who ran for a game-high 183 yards, including 66 and the touchdown on the winning drive. Stephenson remains one game behind top-ranked Tucker and takes on Mays next weekend in a game that could determine second place in the region. M.L. King falls to fourth place and has to face Tucker next weekend.

- Mundy’s Mill and Creekside have captured the subregion titles in 4-AAAAA and will face the No. 4 seeds from the opposite subregions on Nov. 8 in the play-in games that will determine the region’s state playoff teams. Mundy’s Mill beat Union Grove 24-17 to clinch the subregion A title, regardless of the outcome of its game against Ola next weekend. Creekside finished subregion B play 4-0 after its 41-10 victory against McIntosh. The Seminoles are seeking their first 10-0 regular season since 2006.

- Flowery Branch’s 37-7 victory against Clarke Central clinched the top two spots in Region 8-AAAAA (and home first-round playoff games) for Flowery Branch and Gainesville and ensured that their matchup in the regular-season finale will be for the region title for the second consecutive season. The Falcons and Red Elephants are the only unbeaten teams in region play. Flowery Branch is off next week, while Gainesville will try to avenge a loss to Loganville that was one of the biggest upsets of the 2012 season.

- Defending 5-AAAAA champion East Paulding no longer controls its fate in the playoff race. The Raiders’ 24-17 loss to South Paulding left them in a tie for fourth place with Rome (5-3), which holds the tiebreaker because of its victory against East Paulding on Oct. 18. Rome, which has missed the playoffs just once since 2000, can clinch a postseason berth by winning its final regular-season games against Villa Rica (4-4) and Woodland-Cartersville (2-6). East Paulding last missed the playoffs in 2009.

- Defending 1-AAAAA champion Harris County suffered its first region loss since 2011 when the Tigers were whipped by Lee County 44-7. Lee County led 7-0 at halftime but took advantage of a muffed punt, a blocked punt and an interception to score 24 third-quarter points and put the game away. Harris County and Lee County are 2-1 in region play and trail Thomas County Central, which is 4-0. Harris County could still force a tie for first place by beating Thomas Central in the regular-season finale.

Much like the Tucker-Stephenson game 2 weeks ago, the MLK-Stephenson game was a real slugfest to the very end. Either team could’ve won. In this case Stephenson was fortunate to escape with a win. MLK has the talent and size to beat Tucker next week if they shake this one off and come out hyped and prepared. Having seen all 3 of the “Big Cats” play, they are pretty evenly matched. Meanwhile, Stephenson gets no break next week either because Mays can also play and beat any of the Big Cats, as they already have shown beating MLK. Good luck next week MLK. Use that size and talent to offset Tucker’s quickness. I look for the upset as MLK comes out with a real chip on their shoulder.

@DeeDawg. Game was closer than I expected. Mlk did come to play but will more than likely suffer their second consecutive loss when they play Tucker.

Much respect for the Lions , Ive always admired their offensive prowess and speed over the years….MLK a few years back would come down for our 7 on 7 comp and put on a show….But this years edition is a total mess , with the right play calling this would have been an easy win for the Lions or any team with a decent offense………The Jags defense looked soft up the middle ,lights out around the corners…..Pass defense suspect , Mlk had open recievers , but suffered due to poor pass blocking and poor execution of pass plays(wide open in the end zone and the ball falls 5 yards short, I know the flag would have nullified the TD) .Rivers looked bigger ,faster and stronger than last year…..Good game though …..JAB , wish that I was there with you.

MLK with these coaches is dead how can you be on the 15yard line about to go in for a score and send to many kids in the game thats just terrible and why keep calling the QB read option when it hadnt worked all night just stupid!!!!!!!!!

And MLK was clearly the better team That running back got most of his yards on two runs Stephenson DB’s are weak there recievers only have 2 routes and there QB isnt very good If MLK had good coaches they would have beaten Mays and Stephenson and it’s funny how they use there kids they started there back up QB at corner last week and this kid hadnt played or praticed at corner in 2 years and the starting saftey has done a horrible job all year but he never gets taking out the game I now agreed with the MLK haters the KING is Dead not because of lack of talent because lack of good coaching for exmaple the starting QB is good but he clearly holds the ball too long he has done so all year but it hasnt be corrected yet send this losing coaching staff back to where they came.

And the Stephenson players had very little class after being gifted the game by horrible coaching they and there ghetto fans tried to pick a fight with the MLK players just said they acted asif they had just won the state title but I guess thats how it is when you have been owned by a team for 3 years in a row and had gotten there butts handed to them last years in a way this will be the highlight of these kids season LOL sorry JAB but they wont come close to winning state with that horrible offense and Tuckers defense must suck to have let this team put up 28 points.

@jagEDup the only six points wasnt because of Stephenson’s defense it’s because MLK’s offensive coordinator is horrible Stephenson’s defense did look soft and MLk’s receivers got by that soft defense when that horrible playcaller asked them to they just had some bad passes thorwn.

@RG

Yeah most subregions do that, but Region 4 uses the 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 format. So both Creekside and Mundy’s Mill will have to win their play in games to make the playoffs. While unlikely Creekside will lose its play-in game, its very possible Mundy’s Mill might lose and not even make the playoffs despite winning their sub region.

I must admit the MLK players are getting the short end of the stick. We shouldn’t lost to Mays & Stephenson. The staff didn’t make ANY adjustments! I only hope someone on the staff reads these blogs. Alriiiight , alriiiight, alriiiiight! Here we go! Down to the wire in Dekalb County. This is what we have been waiting on! First of all, congratulations to the Jaguars! And to MLK, hold your head up fellas! The season is not over. I would have to be honest and say that I thought Stephenson would beat MLK very convincingly. I was shocked by how disruptive the defense was to Stephenson’s ground game. Yeah, there were a couple of big runs but overall the defense did a good job.. Pleasantly surprised by MLK’s defense and can’t wait for next weeks game.

# 8 for Stephenson is a beast but we already knew that. Rivers is truly special. The Mays game should also be a good one. Mays don’t back down from no one and something tells me that Jarvis is going to want this one . . . . Jarvis seems to get off on haunting DEkalb teams. Especially MLK.

MLK better fix that offense or there will be trouble in the first round. For example, the offensive line quits when beaten, quarterback holds the ball too long and that ugly read option play, and play calling! And the coaches need to pay attention to detail. Too many infractions caused by coaching!!!!!!!!!! Stillll!

They need 2 get rid of the coaching staff at MLK because they don’t know squat. MLK had first down at Stephenson 20yd line and the lead around 8min left in the 4th quarter didn’t do anything. Coaching staff come from a losing program(Newton county).. Please get rid of the them!!! Before anyone ask I would have had 33 in the game and fake the handoff to him and pass.. Stephenson had everyone in the box because of 33.. Offense corridinator call plays like he’s playing video games….And how u bring a losing coach to a winning program that called the hook up.!!!!

I take my grandsons to different high school football games every week and I dont necessarily have a favorite, but over the years I like watching SW Dekalb, MLK, Stephenson, Dunwoody, Tucker and Marist to name a few.
Of course SW Dekalb and Dunwoody are out of it this year.
Marist should do well as always. Unfortunately I cant see them beating Carrollton (who I think will win 4A this year) or Sandy Creek.
MLK has their work cut out for them. Wonderful team filled with talent but unfortunately they need a better driver. A lot of questionable playcalling and indecision. The line appears to be untrained too. A lot of schools with lesser O-lines have better production.
Stephenson has no clue what their identity is this year and should do fine in the first and second round but better not take the 2nd round for granted because their overconfidence could lead to them beating themselves in the 2nd round when the competition gets a little better. They should be a better passing team with all of the size at TE and WR, but the QB situation will cause them to lose games. Both guys they use are not true HS QBs. They need to stick to handing the ball off to that #25 and block like hell for him. He makes good running decisions. Get him some help too. A good coach from an opposing team will shut him down. As far as I see, the playoffs isnt going to be kind to you this year because of the weak passing game and very questionable play calling. Experienced playoff coaches will just confuse these Stephenson coaches if they end up in close games.
As far as Tucker is concerned, I see major issues on offense. We attended the Stephenson vs. Tucker gme and Stephenson’s defense stopped Tucker’s run game all night. I couldnt believe it, this is Tucker’s bread and butter and they probably got 20 yards combined rushing all night. Tucker’s OC is one of the worse I have seen at play-calling or his plays arent executed well because they looked horrible. I live near Panthersville stadium so I take my boys to most games there and last night I saw some of the same against Miller Grove. What saves Tucker is that they probably have the best defense anyone has seen and it doesnt matter the classification 1A all the way to 6A which is why they are dangerous. but their offense is not what I used to enjoy watching. The running backs are running with no blockers in front every time which is why their running game is getting stopped now. They had some runs against Miller Grove, but not what I expected. The O-line shows very little interest in blocking or they just cant; and the OC is really calling some questionable plays too, but they have been lucky that the teams they have played against have been so bad. My kids and me sat on the home side when they played Stephenson and I could hear he Stephenson coordinators calling out all of Tucker’s plays into their head sets which told me the Tucker OC is predictable. I overheard someone say, he is working from an old playbook that he cant translate on the field. Super talented team though and will go as far as they did last year in the playoffs if all stays the same. If they find their running game again, every body else better watch out.

I can only sit here and think about how Cortez Allen tried to downplay the success of Coach Carson/Coach Freeman and the previous staff at King when he first got hired, saying “WINNING REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS IS GREAT, BUT THE ULTIMATE PRIZE IS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP and now he doesn’t a shot at either of them. He acted like they didn’t put their best foot forward to winning state. Carson’s staff went 31-6 in 3 years, including a 11-1 season with Coach Freeman as the interim and to beat Stephenson 3 years in a row has been unheard of in the state of Georgia, but they did it… They never lost to a Dekalb team in 3 years and they went down to Valdosta and beat the almighty Title Town Bandits. Yea they may have come up short, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort. They lost 48-47 to Colquitt in 2010, 24-14 to Lassiter in 2011, and 20-19 to Allatoona in 2012. I’m sure Cortez Allen has his foot in his mouth now cause he definitely has a Dekalb County boot in his behind… I know he is over there eating his crow behind such a lackluster effort. Those kids deserve a whole lot better than what they have as coaches right now.. 6 points??? 6 points??? With Coach Evans as the OC they scored 6 points every other drive again Stephenson… Now they have Tucker this week and the beatdown is only going to be worse… Cortez Allen you are the weakest link… Goodbye!!! because you won’t be around to play long once the regular season is over…

Mr. Johnson, I was waiting on your comments….because you certainly did call it (Cadillac -Pinto – :) . Lots of disappointed parents and students. I believe the talent is there; notwithstanding things beyond the control of the staff. This team should have been able to take it all. It has been a very disappointing season – that entire mood of the game was different from the start. MLK has become known for playing with high intensity and tenacity. Including the Band. For some reason, that was absent from the beginning. Hey….all hope isn’t lost. Tucker hasn’t won yet! They still have to play the game.

I’m no prophet, but I know people and I know football. I’ve watched King since the school opened and each team has taken on each coaches personality… This staff is by far the most passive of them all… They have no fight in them at all. They aren’t in the kids faces when they screw up. I watched how King lit up Dekalb the past few years and it wasn’t just through the air. Say what you want to say about how one dimensional they were, but the were effective with what they did through the air. If you look at their stats from 2010-2012 you will see that they were probably the most balanced team in Dekalb, but the passing yards were better because they were more effective with having 7 Div 1 calibre receivers. in 2010 they ran the ball 252 times vs. 335 passes, in 2011 they ran the ball 319 times vs. 378 passes, and in 2012 they ran the ball 330 times vs. 265 passes… To me that sounds like a good mixture of balance. This years version is close to the same as well with them running the ball 234 times vs. 162 passes… But the most important number is in the WIN column… Just like any fan I may not have always agreed with what Carson and his staff were doing, but they did a great job of executing. These new guys don’t have a clue at all.

Oh Really,

You can say all hope isn’t lost, but you know just like I know that King won’t beat Tucker and then they will have to go to Gainesville to face that juggernaut in the first round… This will be the first time in school history that they won’t get past the first round and it’s all because the powers that be wanted to fix something that wasn’t broken… But leave it up to NON-FOOTBALL people to make football decisions and this is what you get.. A school full of disgruntled parents, players, students, band members, and fans.. It was so funny to see Stephenson’s players and coaches act like they won the Super Bowl after the game and it was because that monkey had been lifted after 3 years and it came at the expense of some guys who shouldn’t be coaching at this level

Ml king fans y’all have a good team! I think that MLK is a top 10 team still like the 8 best. The problem is there offense change. Ml king was a spread offense and throw the ball around! Now the offense just looks bad in my opinion. The defense is actually ok to me. They just have been put in bad situations and yes there secondary needs help. Ml king is still 6-2 and that’s a good record the only problem is the only 2 good teams they have played they lost. Ml king is better than mays to me also but there team doesn’t no how to play in big games because of inexperience. The 10-6 lost to Stephenson was more of an emotional game to me. Stephenson is better than them its just the rivalry!. Tucker will beat MLK by at least 20 and show there true colors. MLK reminds me of tucker last year with having to replace soo much with a new coach. It’s just going to be hard and against the better teams it will show. I dont think the coaching staff should get so much heat because it’s a tough situation to be in with losing soo much from last season and changing the offense and not really having that senior leadership.

Well the BLOG “ATE” my first post and I decided not to go into the same version again…

Suffice it to say EAST is done for 2013…While they played a very spirited game at times Friday against SOUTH PAULDING the same problems that have plagued this team all year continued to show.

EAST entered this game AT HOME in “THE BONEYARD” as a 10 point UNDERDOG!!! You have to go back to before 2005 to find where that ever happened, EAST is extremely hard to beat at home and this was embarrassing. But back to the problems…

The “O” line has been dominated all year long causing undue harassment on the QB causing broken plays, rushed passes, and fumbled handoffs. Additionally they continue to show abysmal play calling, dropped passes and horrendous pass coverage by the secondary as they REFUSE to look back to see where the ball is! They are beat time after time when the receiver catches passes that could easily be blocked of they would simply FIND THE BALL and break up the play!!!

It is abundantly clear at this point that for EAST to recover for the 2014 season they HAVE to aggressively search and find a NEW HEAD COACH! This has to be a priority and done sooner than later so as to let the players KNOW they will be properly coached in the spring to build momentum and desire for the 2014 schedule. DON’T DO THIS and it will take years to recover the program to even the level and respect it had attained…MUCH LESS GROW IT AND MOVE FORWARD!!!
I sat there last Friday night as I have now for 6+ years bell ringing, cheering and hoping BUT in the end EAST hope for the #4 playoff spot (baring some very odd loss by ROME) is to win out and that means winning in “THE BONEYARD” this week against a winless LITHIA SPRINGS team (I wonder if a loss to LITHIA at home would be enough to get ole’ COACH GODDARD fired? Hmmm!), then another HUGE mountain to climb will be beating ALLATOONA at Allatoona!! Even then that PROBABLY won’t be enough if ROME wins out.

Unfortunately the realistic end for this years EAST team is probably going to be 6 / 4, losing to TWO PAULDING COUNTY teams AND missing the playoffs for the only the 2nd time since 05.

Coaching candidates for 2014 PLEASE go tohttp://www.eastpauldingfootball.com and click the boosters tab then send your resumes to the club President, V.P. & Alumni Association..can’t hurt and maybe this will get the ball rolling! .

TICK…TICK…TICK…SPUTTER…COUGH…POOF…DONE FOR 2013!

Having seen all 3 (Tucker-Stephenson-MLK) play. I have to give the edge to Tucker. However, here comes the big “IF”… If MLK plays their best game, they are bigger and stronger than Tucker and could pull off a win. Meanwhile I hope Stephenson isn’t sleeping on Mays. What is the real likelihood of East making a coaching change after only 2 years. Personally I don’t see it happening over just losses, it has to be much more to loose the job, and from everything I hear, he’s a great guy, and runs a clean program.

We are not sleeping on anyone…….Mays played a very inspired game last year, so did Arabia Mountain. Miller Grove and MLK beat us, have you seen what we did to those three? Mays will be the the fourth on the list this year. These JAGS will shut down Mays offense and #25 will run through them with ease!!! I hate to say this, but the only people that can beat these JAGS are our coaches!!! If they allow our athletes to do what they are capable of we are unstoppable!!

To all that MLK could have beat us and blamed it on their coaches, you must give this JAGUAR DEFENCE their just due!!!! This is one of the best defenses in the state if not the BEST. You show me a team that will keep that group of backs (#5,#1,#20,#23,#9,#2) that Tucker have out of the endzone. Stephensen should beat Mays if they play the entire four quarters. If the defense for Stephenson takes a few plays off or make an untimely penalty they could be in trouble. Mays is a quick strike offense, you can’t give them any breaks. Stephenson defense and running game should overwhelm Mays.

First, congrates to the Jaguars for finally getting the monkey (Lion) off their back, it’s been awhile coming. Stephenson’s 2013 victory has stated ONE fact, there will not be a repeat 5A region 6 champ and a new #1 seat. Odds on favor, November 1st, will determine the region’s CHAMPS for 2013, key games MLK/Tucker and Mays/Stephenson. A Tucker Tiger win and the last games will mean seating for 3 & 4.

Arabian Mtn victory over SWD has put some intrigue into region 6’s playoff representatives, look for the Rams to WIN out. The playoffs are fast approaching, time to put up or shut up.

I must be missing something here…”he’s a great guy, and runs a clean program” as you put it….FIRST OFF EVERY Coach should be running a “clean program”…these are very influential high school kids…We can’t ever forget that. and we hope all the kids and parents like the Coach since for a fair amount of hours each year they are being placed in his hands to Coach, Teach and Mold into young men.

That being said he is also EXPECTED to WIN…You expect the Coach to have the ability to take a program and build it year after year into a program the kids WANT to play for, that they VIE to be on and involved with. EAST had gone from a losing program to an annual playoff contender building for the opportunity somewhere down the line to hopefully contend for a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. EAST had a program that the community was supporting along with the parents and traveled to watch them win away games, many times filling the visitors side larger and louder than the HOME side.

I agree 2 years is NOT very long BUT you have to look at things from this perspective…His first year 2012 EAST went UNDEFEATED and won the REGION 5 AAAAA Championship…HOWEVER he did this with a team build by the PREVIOUS coach and his staff…he benefited by the Senior leadership and talent from Coach Reid.

Now comes 2013 and EAST struggled from game one! Losing the first game to NORTH PAULDING in “THE BONEYARD”…then lost to ROME on the road and then last Friday again losing in “THE BONEYARD” to SOUTH PAULDING. The team has been manhandled and pushed around, the QB harassed all year by opposing defenses, they have NO pass rush or ANY pass defense at all!

This was NOT a Coach brought in to change or build a team into a winner…This was a Coach that was HANDED and I mean HANDED a winning program, with great facilities, a very loyal fan base of parents and followers, and a feeder program of kids coming up that had ALREADY been built.

The next Coach at EAST was expected to continue the winning tradition that had been built over the last 6 or 7 years…instead the EAST program has slid backwards FAST!!!

Unfortunately the realistic end for this years EAST team is probably going to be 6 / 4, losing to TWO PAULDING COUNTY teams AND missing the playoffs for the only the 2nd time since 05.

Coaching candidates for 2014 PLEASE go to: http://www.eastpauldingfootball.com and click the boosters tab then send your resumes to the club President, V.P. & Alumni Association..can’t hurt and maybe this will get the ball rolling! .

I cannot wait to the playoffs to start so we can finally make a conclusion as to who was actually playing in the toughest region. I am not stating Region 5 is the toughest region, but there are some very good teams still battling it out for the playoffs. Watch out for Region 5.

If Mays loses to Tucker and Stephenson that will give them 3 region losses. Arabia Mtn should win its last 2 games and they will also have 3 region losses. Does anyone know if Arabia Mtn gets the nod over Mays, who will also have 3 region losses. And if Mlk loses to Tucker, which is highly likely, they too will have 3 region losses. 3 teams in region 6 with 3 region loses, who gets the third and fourth playoff spots?

@Cannon

COME ON MAN. Reid did great things for the program true, but he knew that it wasn’t sustainable year after year and that was part of the reason he was constantly looking for a new job after every season when we got bumped to the higher classification for those two years you could tell by the end of the second season, that our lack of depth wouldnt allow us to compete at that higher level. (Playoffs missed and the team was in disarray by then of the end of the 2009 season).

East has been losing enrollment since the opening of North Paulding and Allatoona(yes that Cobb school growth has effected East). When realignment comes out next year both those teams (North and Allatoona) are likely headed for AAAAAA and East very possibly could be down to AAAA. The numbers on the teams from 6-12 have fallen each of the last 6 years. East was swept by the north Middle school, and Goddard doesn’t coach those teams. NUMBERS won’t allow for him to compete.

Now all that being said……..I think that is exactly why Goddard keeps his job for the foreseeable future. The lack of ability to team build and will coaching talent will be swept under th carpet and blamed on NUMBERS. Right or wrong….that is what I see the reality to be.

I agree with you totally!!! Having receivers with height is great (6′7,6′5,6′3,6′1) but if you are not using them the proper way it means nothing. Look at Missouri, the same thing, but they use their receivers. They catch and run all routes. As a coach, you must put your players in position to make plays. Your quarterbacks must be able to throw passes other than jump balls. And if you are going to throw jump balls at least throw them at the other team weakest corner. The game against Tucker we went at #4, the kid is an ATHLETE!!! The MLK game we went at #20, another ATHLETE!!! Our coaches have to be alot smarter, take advantage of the obvious mismatch and not got at the other team best corner. Both of the kids mentioned have verbally committed to D-1 schools (Clemson and South Carolina). We have the talent. They just need to be coached up. Last but not least, our special teams need to improve. If they dont it will cost us in the playoffs. That was the difference in the Tucker game. Fortunately, MLK’s is worse than ours or it could have cost us this past week.

I’m confident our JAGS will work out the concerns, the coaches will get it together and we will be crowned 2013 5A STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!!

@rwdekalb – Based on your previous post examples and if all games fall as you question, then Arabia Mtn, will get the #4 spot, with the head-to-head victory over Mays, on Oct 12th. Mays is in control of it’s destiny – WIN OUT or a VICTORY over Stephenson or Tucker then they are in. MLK is in the post season, regardless of their next TWO outcomes, it will be just a matter of the Lions region seating position. I also agree, the Rams will WIN out.

“WE ARE TUCKER” – Currently 8-0 & #1 in the REGION – The Tigers have been RELEASED!!!
