Looking for a new No. 1: Collins Hill upends North Gwinnett

North Gwinnett escaped with its No. 1 ranking a couple of weeks ago when it won a game against Mill Creek 50-47 after trailing by 21 in the fourth quarter. On Friday, the Bulldogs were out of comebacks.

Collins Hill, ranked ninth but now a contender to win powerful Region 7, stunned North Gwinnett 53-28. Collins Hill quarterback Tyler Herman threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns. North Gwinnett quarterback Hayden Sphire injured his ankle late in the first half and did not return.
Oddly, Collins Hill was shut out 28-0 last week by Norcross, a team that North Gwinnett was impressive in beating 36-17 in September.

Meanwhile, Norcross, the defending state champion,  won its sixth straight game Friday, beating 10th-ranked Peachtree Ridge 24-20.  Norcross drove 90 yards on 15 plays for the winning touchdowns.

North Gwinnett became the third No. 1 team in the in Class AAAAAA to lose this season. The others have been Norcross and Colquitt County.

In other news from AAAAAA:

- Colquitt County is in line to be ranked No. 1, again. The second-ranked Packers defeated Valdosta 17-10. They trailed 10-3 at halftime and 10-9 in the fourth quarter before taking advantage of a fumbled punt to pull it out. Colquitt’s only loss is to nationally ranked Hoover of Alabama.

- Archer, which opened in 2009, is the Region 8 champion. The Tigers clinched their first region title with a 48-31 victory over South Gwinnett. Archer, ranked No. 5 last week, is now the only undefeated team in Class AAAAAA after No. 1 North Gwinnett’s demise.

- Alpharetta cleared its final major hurdle toward winning Region 6. With a 14-12 victory over Lambert, Alpharetta now has defeated its main region rivals and can clinch with a victory over Centennial (1-7) or Johns Creek (0-8) the next two weeks. It would be Alpharetta’s second region title in three seasons.

- No. 4 Camden County was looking like an upset victim early, trailing 12-3 at halftime against Brunswick. But the Wildcats came back to win 18-12.

Congrats to the AHS Raiders for an important win. Offense was pretty ugly in the 2nd half and the Raiders need to get better to compete in playoffs, but every win is precious. Let’s get RB Lem Cobbs back on the field soon and finish strong.

Itll be hard to find a better defense in the state than Colquitt. They showed last night that the defense can carry the team when the offense is having an off night.

Rankings don’t mean anything when you have a true playoff system. Just ask Lassiter the last two seasons. in 2011, they were a 4 seed out of their region and beat three #1 seeds in the playoffs. In 2012, they finish undefeated and ranked #1 only to lose the first playoff game to a 4 seed Brookwood.

This is why we play the games…boys!

Colquitt fans, ya’ll should thank Alex Cason for giving you guys a gift last night. Because without him, we wouldn’t be sitting here talking about Colquitt Co. being #1 right now. And Colquitt Co. didn’t have an off night last night, you can point your finger at that Valdosta defense for your offensive woes last night. Point them at all 11 of them. They were the culprit!!

After last night, we now know who the playoff teams from Region 7 are:

NORCROSS

NORTH GWINNETT

PEACHTREE RIDGE

COLLINS HILL

Norcross has clinched at least a share of the region title and will finish 7-1 in the region. With a loss by North Gwinnett in their final game against PTR, Norcross will get the #1 seed. A very good Mill Creek team is left out no matter what else happens at this point.

The seeds are up in the air. There are two games that still matter for the seeds and both are in the last week of the season. These games are:

Peachtree Ridge at North Gwinnett

Collins Hill at Mill Creek

Congratulations to the Collins Hill Eagles family..

I thought they had a good shot at the upset when NG’s QB Sphire went down… & the Eagles only kept the throttle to the floor!

That Archer program is more impressive each & every week too..

IMO – The 6-A & 3-A state champion will still come outta Gwinnett County.. As it has for the past 3-4 years….

Congrats to Collins Hill for a job well done. It is indeed good to see the mighty fall. Not meaning to disparage North but more-so aimed at it’s fan base that felt they could not be beaten. Any given Friday applies to all.

I’m with Packer Chick. I don’t want the no.1 curse. Right now, we need to win region and get the offense playing like a number one team. Fans, if you want to see how to shut down the pass, look at Valdosta’s secondary. Mobley had time but no open receivers at all.

@5-Time= Hey we will take it any way we can get it. In a game like that with both teams playing like its a playoff game it always comes down to who’s team makes the least amount of mistakes. I don’t blame the Alex kid because he is a play maker and was trying to make a play for his team. We can harp about all the things that wasn’t done right on both teams but it was a clean hard fought game and the Wildcat defense came in on a mission and played great as did the black hats from Moultrie. Great game between two long time rivals. I don’t know if you are Valdosta or Lowndes but both have defenses to keep u guys in any ballgame and good luck the rest of the way bro

WildHawg2012……………………….Great game last night. Yes, both squads made costly mistakes in the game, but none was more costly than the one Alex Cason made with 5 minutes left remaining in the game. That set up their game winning touchdown. Can you imagine what would of took place, had he not fumbled that punt?? We’ll never know, but that sure was a game changing moment. But anyways………….I’m a Lowndes fan first. Come on man, you know that. And I’m a Valdosta fan also. Besides, I was pullin for a Valdosta upset to shake up the Region. Good luck to you guys. Colquitt Co.’s defense should be able to carry them through the playoffs…

Valdosta looked a whole lot better than Lowndes last night in the HawgPen. Cats have one of the best teams and coaches in the state. They sure deserve to be in the playoffs. If they played Vikes, Bluecats or Pack again, it’s a toss-up who’d win. Hope the Cats end up 3-3 in Region and make it into playoffs. Hold your heads up boys! Ya’ll sure have a good team! Ya’ll seem to be getting better & better.

Sure was a close game! Glad we won! Don’t want to play again unless it’s in the DOME!

@RobFromNorcross – my crystal ball seems to show Mill Creek defeating Collins Hill. What would happen then?

RobFromNorcross

October 26th, 2013
2:58 pm

@GwinnettDad if you go to the link, it shows that it doesn’t matter Mill Creek is out. Here is the rest of the info…

If North Gwinnett beats PTR, and Mill Creek beats CH, then seeds are:

1 North Gwinnett (7-1) (loss to CH)

2 Norcross (7-1) (loss to NG)

3 Collins Hill (6-2)

4 Peachtree Ridge (5-3)

If North Gwinnett beats PTR and CH beats MC, then seeds are:

1T Norcross (7-1) (loss to NG)

1T Collins Hill (7-1) (loss to Norcross)

1T North Gwinnett (7-1) (loss to CH)

4 Peachtree Ridge (5-3)

I assume this three way tie for 1,2 and 3 would be decided by coin flips?

If North Gwinnett loses to PTR and Mill Creek over CH, then seeds are:

1 Norcross (7-1)

2 Collins Hill (6-2) (loss to Norcross, MC)

3 Peachtree Ridge (6-2) (loss to CH, Norcross)

4 North Gwinett (6-2) (loss to CH, PTR)

And lastly, if NG loses to PTR and CH over MC, then seeds are:

1 Norcross (7-1) (loss to NG)

2 Collins Hill (7-1) (loss to Norcross)

3 Peachtree Ridge (6-2) (loss to CH, Norcross)

4 North Gwinnett (6-2) (loss to CH, PTR)

This all assumes that Duluth (2-6) won’t beat Collins Hill (7-1), since Duluth has lost by an average of 35 pts to the other Top 4 teams in the region, plus losses to Berkmar (3-5) and South Gwinnett (3-5), and due to the fact that Collins Hill has averaged 40+ points in their region games to date and Duluth is averaging about 12.

It also assumes Mountain View (2-6) won’t beat North Gwinnett

It also assumes Meadowcreek (1-7) won’t beat Norcross or PTR

Any of these would be an upset of biblical proportions.

@ 5-time Our returner fumbled twice. The only touchdown Valdosta had was helped by our defense by 45 yards in personal fouls. So if your talking about gifts your welcome for those. It was a good defensive battle by both teams. Great game just as close as the last three.

I commented last night on the game’s write up, so I didn’t go “silent” or “disappear”. It was a good game, except for the officiating, that ended in the way I feared it would. I’ve been saying all week and last that Collins Hill is the one team on the schedule that could beat NG. I hope Hayden Sphire is ready to go by the PTR game in two weeks.

The game got out of hand after the 8 minute mark in the 4th quarter. NG had a 25-24 lead in the 3rd. There was a lot of punches thrown by Collins Hill during the game, which is uncharacteristic of their program. I have the play that Sphire got hurt on video and it’s very interesting how the ref did not see the late hit. Our defense has to figure itself out and get back to their early season form. That is something that can’t be denied or argued. We look lost against half-back draws out of the shotgun formation!

RobfromNorcorss: I believe if CH wins out, North Gwinn wins out and Norcross wins out, Collins Hill would be the region champ. They all beat each other so the next tie breaker (I think) is record vs Non Region teams. CH is 2-0, North is 2-0 and Norcross is 1-1. Norcross would get the 3 seed. CH beat North head to head so they would get the #1 and North Gwinn would be #2. What I’ve heard so if you think it’s different I would like to know. Going to be interesting and any of the teams from Region 7 can win the State Title. They have been battle tested and have already played against the best.

RobFromNorcross

October 26th, 2013

@Eagle Norcross if the non-region schedule comes into play it only is for teams in the same classification. Since Our non-region loss was to a FL team and they are not in GA classification AAAAAA, I don’t think that game would apply and we would all be 1.000 winning percentage in the non-region games. But I don’t know the tie breaker for sure.

@Todd? Can you find this out?

Eli from Auburn

Valdosta should have punted on 4th down on Pack’s 48 yard line. The Cats defense was playing great and with an average punt by our outstanding punter the Pack would have been backed up inside the 20 yard line. IMO this cost us the game.

I read on Gwinnett Prep Sports that 7AAAAAA had decided to forgo a coin flip in a 3 way tie that head to head could not break for mini games. I do not like mini playoff games because of the risk of injury and lost preparation time for the playoffs. The article assumed that a 3 way tie for the last 2 playoff spots so I don’t know if that will work in the championship situation. I would assume if they decided not to do that, they would go to a coin flip which they were using prior to the mini game discussion. I don’t really think you can use out of region record to select the champion as Collins Hill and North Gwinnett had the huge advantage of not playing the number 1 team in the nation (by the way they have also beaten the 30th and the 7th nationally ranked teams so they are that good). The best way to do it without a mini playoff would be point differential of the games involving the 3 teams. Norcross had a 45-36 difference and would be regions champs, Collins Hill would be second at 56-53, and North Gwinnett third at 54-60. They will decide it how they see fit, but I will say that the 2nd place team appears to have the better bracket to the semi finals.

It is hard to judge how good a defense is and once teams get to the quarterfinals everything is pretty even. Hughes may be good, but giving up 28 to 2-6 Wheeler leaves room for doubt. The last two years have shown that offense will be the deciding factor in the championships. The use of the spread offense by more teams means more athletes are being used in the offensive side of the ball.

Sportsnut

October 26th, 2013

They may have given up 28 to Wheeler but that means they only gave up 40 in the rest combined. That is the lowest in the state in AAAAAA. They are also # 10 in the state in scoring, having scored 294 pts.
