St. Pius-Woodward showdown will clarify or muddy Region 6 picture

The situation in Region 6-AAA will either clear up a great deal or get even murkier this week, depending on the outcome of the game between St. Pius and Woodward Academy game.

If No. 6 St. Pius wins, the Golden Lions (6-1, 3-0) will be a step closer to defending their championship. Coach Paul Standard’s team closes with tough games against Blessed Trinity and Decatur.

If Woodward (5-2, 3-1) wins, the War Eagles would be in position to finish first. A Woodward win could throw the league into a four-way tie for first place and put even more importance in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Woodward and St. Pius have been sporadic rivals since the late 1960s. Woodward leads the series 12-3-2 and beat the Golden Lions 20-14 a year ago. The two teams have been slugging it out off and on since coaching legends George Maloof was at St. Pius and Graham Hixon was at Woodward.

Woodward is one of the best defensive teams that St. Pius has faced this year. Led by two-way standout Terry Googer, the War Eagles have allowed only a touchdown in each of their last three games.

St. Pius, however, runs the option as well as anyone behind quarterback Joey Connors and runners Dalton Wilson and Nick Ruffin. Pius is coming off an impressive 39-12 win over Cedar Grove.

There are many other games Friday that will have a bearing on their respective region playoff races:

Elbert County at Hart County: If No. 9 Elbert County (5-2, 4-0) can beat No. 5 Hart County (7-0, 4-0) on the road, the Blue Devils will virtually clinch the Region 8 championship. A Hart win would add extra meaning to the season finale against No. 10 North Oconee.

This game should be a showdown between two stellar quarterbacks. Hart’s Dakota Mitchell is a two-way threat and Elbert’s Mecole Hardman is an outstanding runner. Hardman ran for 166 yards last week in the win over North Oconee.

Cartersville at Adairsville: The No. 2 Purple Hurricanes (7-0, 4-0) should get a better test from Adairsville (5-2, 3-1) than most teams in Region 5. Adairsville will have a difficult time stopping the Cartersville offense, led by quarterback Brooks Barden, who had six touchdowns in the first half a week ago. It will be a good warmup for Cartersville’s season finale showdown against Ringgold. Cartersville leads the series 10-2 and Adairsville’s last win game in 1987.

Other important games this week include:

Region 2: Pike County at Peach County, where the loser will likely be the No. 3 team in the playoffs. A Peach win would set up a showdown for the region title with Carver.

Region 3: No. 3-ranked Washington County at Thomson isn’t the marquee game it’s been in the past, since the Bulldogs have struggled this season. But the winner of this game will most likely be the No. 1 team in the playoffs.

Region 7: White County, which upset North Hall a week ago, will be tested this week by Dawson County. North Hall returns home for a game with rival West Hall, which features teams that are both 3-1 in the league.

Fans of either SPX & WA–if anybody near you starts harassing the refs. Friday night, kindly tell them to behave! GO GOLDEN LIONS!

Can anyone explain to me why SPX have the stands on one side of the field??? If you want me to believe y’all have rivalries, I just don’t get the fans sitting on the same side thing because the losing team fans are always going to cry about how the winning team fans act when celebrating a win…. Which is dumb!!!

SOW did you ask that question at Lovett? You present a questionable premise that fans can act badly if they aren’t sitting on the same side of the field? How about the other stadiums in metro ATL which are one sided? Didn’t seem to prevent SPX and WACO from having a pretty good competitive environment at SPX during last years playoffs. And btw, there is a creek behind the far sideline. I suspect you will be in the “Brickyard” Friday not at SPX.

Personally, I love the one sided stadium. I like to say hi to the visitors and chat with them at the concession stand. We have great concessions at SPX and it is good to know that EVERYBODY has access to the BBQ, gumbo, grilled cheese, brats, etc. Good food puts you in a good mood, win or lose! Everybody gets to hear the bands! I find it to be a much friendlier atmosphere. At the stadiums with separate entrances I get the feeling that someone is expecting the fans to behave badly if the get too close. Just a game folks.

SPXfan, I agree – some of our fans need to remember their manners when it comes to the refs.

Hamilton and SPXFAN- The SPX family is a unique and wonderful thing, but this really is not the forum to advocate approaching another spectator concerning what you may perceive as inappropriate or “harassing”. The REF’s at SPX get the best treatment for any games they work (and they will tell you that)- I think asking everyone to police themselves and be respectful in what may be a very energetic game is the appropriate statement, if any at all. If you have an issue we have adequate faculty, security and police to resolve any issues that could arise. We get nothing but compliments about our Football organization and I am sure that will be the case Friday night! GO GOLDEN LIONS!

Should be a great Ballgame at Maloof Stadium tomorrow night. WA has a ton of skill kids on O and their D is one of the tops in AAA for points allowed. Might be who we have been playing too. Reality is that we have lost to the 2 best teams we have played. For us to be considered for any accolades, this is almost a “must win ” for the Big Red. Last year we benefited from Turnovers, but the kids created them when they needed them. This is becoming a rivalry like WA and Marist used to have in the 70’s and 80’s. WA knows how big this game is and I know Pius has had this game circled since we beat last year in College Park at Graham Hixon Field. This is what these kids and Coaches and even us fans look forward to after all these other games played: A chance to still keep hopes alive for a Region Championship. It has been a long time since WA has had one, 16 long years in fact! Hopefully we can keep that hope alive tomorrow night. We know it is going to be tough to win at Pius though. It always is. Cant wait til tomorrow night!!

I’m sure Thompson couldn’t think of a better way to bring a disappointing season to an end with a victory over WACO.
Waiting to hear from Son of WACO. I’m sure you’ll be traveling to Thompson.
Hesistant to call for an upset, but there’s still interest in this game.t

Woodward should be some stiff competition tonight for Pius, hope our boys are ready! We welcome the Woodward fans and you should try to get there a little early and take advantage of the remote parking with a shuttle that will take you right to the stadium.

@ron @rex sure I always make time for the Thomson game… If they upset us that would be a game I know I wouldn’t want to miss, but just two weeks ago they beat a team 21-6 who we beat last fri 62-13… Thomson went from running the spread to back running the wing-t and afraid to run the qb because if he gets hurt they have no back up…. Even with all that said it’s a rivalry game, so it can go either way…

WA won’t know what to do the first time #42 hits them square in the mouth….. Golden Lions will send the red hawks back to College Park with 4-2 tattooed to their backsides. Oh yea!!!

@ron never was worried just knew Thomson coach if he was a good one… could have had a great rally pre game speech by saying “The other games don’t matter if we win this game we are in the driver seat for a #1 seed in the playoffs and be region champs” What team wouldn’t try and bring their A game…. Just that it wasn’t enough Fri with our 55-13 beat down…
