AAAAAA: North Gwinnett, Colquitt, Norcross brace for key home games Friday

Friday might bring the best night of games until the playoffs in Class AAAAAA.

No. 1 North Gwinnett, No. 2 Colquitt County and defending champion Norcross all play home games on Friday against current or recent Top 10 teams in Class AAAAAA.

Collins Hill plays at Norcross in a game that matches Region 7s leading passers. North Gwinnett’s Hayden Sphire is 110-of-180 for 1,649 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Collins Hill’s Tyler Herman is 100-of-159 for 1,550 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Collins Hill, ranked No. 9 and 6-1, needs a good showing after losing to Norcross 28-0 last week.

- Valdosta, unranked and 5-2, has beaten Colquitt County three consecutive times. Colquitt County coach Rush Propst is 1-4 against Valdosta, which won the 2012 game 38-36 after taking a 38-14 lead into the final minutes.

- Peachtree Ridge, ranked No. 6 and 6-2, presents to Norcross the challenge of a balanced offense. Chance Thrasher has thrown for 1,483 yards, and Jordan Ellis is Gwinnett County’s leading rusher with 1,000 yards.

Other games to watch in AAAAAA –

Archer (8-0, 6-0) can clinch its first region title in history with a victory over South Gwinnett (2-5, 2-3) in Region 8.

Hughes (6-1, 2-0) plays at East Coweta (4-3, 2-0) for what should decide the Region 3 title.

Alpharetta (5-2) effectively will end the race in Region 6 if the Raiders can win at home Friday against Lambert (4-3, 3-1).

The oldest Rivalry in Georgia face off in Moultrie, GA. Friday Night. If Valdosta can stay balanced, keeping Colquitt Co. on their toes, they just might have a chance on a 4th straight victory. 1913 is the year Colquitt Co. and Valdosta began their rivalry against one another…

Is Hughes for real or just the beneficiary of a weak region? I guess we’ll know when the playoffs arrive!

High 5, can it be both? Lovejoy is definitely for real based on last season, but is probably in the weakest region top to bottom. Maybe the same for Hughes?

@Peter, Region 2 isn’t really a region, it is just one team. But that one team is a pretty good team most years. This year, it is too early to tell how good Lovejoy is since they lost the only really tough game they have played.

Unless Cat D plays “out-of-their-mind”, I don’t see them stopping the Pack O enough to keep them in the game.

One thing so interesting about tomorrow night is that at least around Atlanta it is going to be COLD! Specifically, teams that like to throw will have a ball that feels harder to throw and harder to catch than normal. Tomorrow night, a very good, reliable runner will fumble . . . probably twice, maybe more. A stupid play. A missed catch. A tipped ball. That’s why the games have to be played. And somebody will not be able to adapt, and lose unexpectedly. I’m putting on my woolies. No need to catch cold.

Valdosta Qb is young but has a lot of heart. If he can get the ball to star receiver Alex Cason and if Vhs running backs play like they usually do……. the pack will have a tough time defeating them. It’ll take 4 quarters. Valdosta’s offense has potential to be very very exciting and very very good!

What kills Valdosta’s O is a relatively weak offensive line, and a slew of offensive penalties week in and week out that kill their drives. Alex Cason and Rico are two pretty good receivers, they aren’t Malcolm Mitchell good, but they are still worthy…that being said, Valdosta must not have many others…Their punter/other QB sometimes lines up as a receiver and does a decent job….but he’s HUGE so it’s okay. Last week though, I saw the third string QB playing slot receiver, which was a little concerning. I think he went 0 for 1. I agree with eagleeyes in saying that Valdosta’s offense has potential. They just have to stop losing yards on penalties, and get their O-line together. Their defense is outstanding this year! GO CATS!

Squirrel,
Lowndes had 205 total yards against Colquitt, but only 83 against Valdosta. I think the strength of both teams is their defense. Valdosta has only allowed 95 points in 7 games, that’s an avg of 13. 5. Colquitt, has allowed 80 points for an avg of 11.7. Offensively Valdosta avg 28,5 ppg and Colquitt 25.2 ppg. Statistically wise these are two evenly matched games. While Colquitt is a little more balanced pass and run. Don’t see a blowout game here. A close game that could go either way. A big play here or a turnover there may determine this game in my opinion. Colquitt is at home, so home field will always give a team a slight edge. This game has playoff atmosphere all over it. Heading south for this one.

eliminate the penalties and valdosta could be an undefeated team.they loss 2 games by a combined 7 points.the shuman kid is a soph and wasn’t expested to see much action this year.with massingale going down 2-1/2 weeks before the start of the season the offense has been a work in progress and the shuman kid is starting to grow into the posistion.i wouldn’t sleep on valdosta and the scairy thing is just how young this team is.they’re starting 9 soph. and 2 freshman.

Well Folks…here’s you some gospel about the Valdosta/Colquitt skirmish….

Always a tough game…and this year won’t be any different. Colquitt’s defense is prone to giving up the big play…so expect a couple of scores from the Cats. The big question is whether the Hawgs will be able to move the ball effectively against that MONSTER Valdosta defense. Red Zone efficiency will tell the tale. If Colquitt can put the ball into the end zone instead of having to kick FGs…it should be a LONG night for the Cats. BUT…that ain’t a given by no means. Another factor.is…how will the Hawgs come out of the gate. Colquitt has been notorious for starting slow and coming on strong in the 2nd half. They’ll need to step up their game tonight. They’ll hafta play 48 minutes of offensive football if they want to win. The Blackhat defense will do its job. The “do or die” deed will rest on Mobley and Crew’s shoulder’s. Rush says that tonight will tell us how bad we want to win a State Championship. He could be right. We need to prove to ourselves that we’re ready to move the train forward. We need to be…..All In.

So what is the prognostication? Mobley and Crew get the job done. Call it 24-14 or possibly 24-17 (if the Cats can actually kick a FG). Also…one other piece of gospel for ya….It’s Gonna Be ROWDY In The Hawg Pen Tonight !!!!!

EVERYBODY….Be Ready To Rumble !!!!

Rufus, we have got to win this one. As I was discussing the game with my 6 year old last night, he reminded me “Daddy, the packers always win” As I was laughing and informing that they don’t always win. It dawned on me that he has been going to the games with me for 2 years although not all games but I think 10 and he in fact has never seen the packers lose. Anyway, I have decided that he is the good luck charm and he will be there tonight in his new Pack jacket ready to win.

Sounds like Rufus is trying to emulate OMacG with his dialog. But I heard his mentor and idol is the “Velvet Voice of the Airwaves”, Monty Long.

“Is the Colquitt Valdosta game going to be live streamed?” That was just a propaganda junk issue the Nasty Cat people raised during Winnersville Week, attempting to cast LHS as being Bully Bad Apple. They could care less if the game is live streamed, as the Dosta fans who control things, like everywhere else, will actually be at the game.

Like most Viking followers, I am pulling for a Cat victory tonight. Don’t laugh, it’s more than possible. The mighty Hawgs CAN defeated.

Now, along with that, if my Vikes can just take care of business and beat Tift, I will have a good weekend.

Hughes is playing the team who come on their schedule. Nobody never complain when they was losing. Now they are winning the teams they are playing are weak yeah right. Remind you last year they was rank to finish last in the weak region. This year they are rank to finish thrid in the weak region. Sometime people just need to give these kids some credit for having a defense who only allowed 58 points on them in seven games.

South Fulton Advocate

Hughes has only played 2 region games thus far. In those 2 region games they have allowed a whopping 3 points and has scored 88. I’m sorry. It seems like some people are being exposed by playing these young kids. I heard that 6 out of the front 7 will be back next year on Defense. Yessss. I agree with you, I wouldnt worry about them either.

@VikingDad – Amigo, let’s be brutally honest. Ole Rufus is likely to let your comment about emulating OMacG…slide…and actually be somewhat flattered…BUT…The Potentate of Powder Springs…as he likes to be called…will probably take offense and call you out for a duel of 1800 tequila shots.

And The Velvet Voice of the Valdosta Airwaves…don’t pay much attention to Lowndes fans nor Packer fans…for that matter. Since he got so famous…he has WAY TOO MANY other things to worry about.

Lastly, ifin I were you…and I’m more than glad I ain’t…(Smile)…I’d worry about them durn Blue Devils. I heard a rumor that Valdosta might have wee wee’d them off. Watch your kicker….

@ Really???????? ! You didn’t look at the Pack’s strength of schedule versus the Wildcat’s schedule….so the yearly stats go toward the Pack a little more than you give them credit for. I am enjoying the fact that coach Propst has said he wants to win the region this year. I think he always wants to win it but didn’t deem it necessary to win the state title. We might actually host playoff games in the Hawg Pen. Valdosta, heads up, the “Golden Herd” has a “D” this year. The Pack will end the losing streak tonight. Packers – 31– TameKitties – 10.

Safe travels to all the Valdosta fans and even tho it will be a really good game but I fully expect the Mighty Packers to be victorious once again. The Cats bring a big defense and two of the best RB’s in the region so we better come out of the gate swinging. I don’t see us throwing 5 INT’s this year so Valdosta’s offense will have to produce the points and that wont be easy against a very physical and big defense. Our defensive ends are relentless and our defense will be ready. Go Pack!!

Good Luck 7-AAAAAA Dad. I remember the huge uproar when NG beat CH at CH and tore down their goal post. I think that was about the time North started their streak agianst CH. The streak is actually kind of surprising given the quality of players at CH. I think North has pretty much 0wned CH since that event. North was even the only team to beat CH in soccer that year you won the State Championship with only 1 loss all season.

You have my permission to attempt to take down the North goalposts if you beat North on their field. OTOH I cannot even begin to imagine a team allowing a visiting team to do something like that.

Let the battle of Suwanee begin. Godo Luck to all. I hope nobody gets hurt.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that GHSA supplies the football, but the home team puts it into play. Kickers have learned to use a slightly under inflated ball to make up for cold, hard footballs. As a player who played in ice and snow, the weather is only a factor to those teams that allow it to affect them. If it is REALLY cold a little extra water on the field can make it tough for visiting teams. snicker.
