Poll Talk: North Cobb reassumes original No. 7 spot; big games loom in Region 7-AAAAAA

North Cobb started the season ranked No. 7 in Class AAAAAA. The Warriors are back in their original position in this week’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution high school football rankings after beating an undefeated Top 10 team for the second straight week.

North Cobb, which fell out of the Top 10 after an early-season loss to unranked Walton, knocked off No. 2 McEachern 28-26 on Friday in a key Region 4-AAAAAA game.

The week before, North Cobb upset No. 6 Hillgrove. North Cobb is well-positioned to win its first region title since 2007.

More movement can be expected this week in the highest classification. No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett plays at home against No. 9 Collins Hill, and No. 6 Norcross is at home against No. 10 Peachtree Ridge. Those teams are from Region 7.

Etowah dropped from the AAAAAA Top 10 after losing to county rival Cherokee.

Other new teams in the rankings this week are Allatoona and North Paulding for Warner Robins and Lee County in AAAAA and Elbert County and Appling County for North Hall and North Oconee in AAA.

Evidently the Cinderella team that has received no mention as yet is Cambridge High School Lady Bears who UPSET and SWEPT the Allatoona #1 SEED in a doubleheader and come from behind 5-0 in the bottom of the 6th inning of game 2 to advance to Sweet 16!

Cambridge Lady Bears are a 2nd year team with 2 Freshmen pitchers and only 1 Senior!!

On to Loganville High in the Sweet 16!! Let’s go Lady Bears!!

I guess we are going to wait until Langston Hughes wins a few more games before giving them a ranking? Do the team a favor, and do not list them at all rther than giving them the TH “Kiss of death” just in time for their first playoff game. If they cannot be ranked in the penultimate week, then do not rank them at all.

Given Lovejoy’s close games with mid-tier opponents, and the fact their only strong opponent resulted in a loss, I just do not see them being ranked that high. Camden, Norcross, and Archer are all playing better football, and I am sure they would all do just as well against Luella, Alcovy, and mighty Rockdale.

Thanks for the early rankings, Mr. Holcomb.

@ Suwanee Owns == Could it be that someone knows more than you? How is it that Camden, Norcross and Archer are playing better ball? Is this because Lovejoy is ranked ahead of all the Suwanee area teams other than North? You are free to voice your opinion. Don’t hold back.

It is clear you have no love for us and that is just fine. I could be of the same mind and question why P’tree Ridge is there. Six of the top 10 is from Gwinnett and you are not satisfied. Do you want all the spots? Yes, you do but you can’t have them.

November is coming.

@Sportsnut– A little off on your addition. Lovejoys record the last 5 years is in fact 48-11. The yearly record is 2013(7-1), 2012(13-2), 2011(14-1), 2010(10-1) and 2009(4-6). Also, there is now way possibe that 8 of the 10 on Loejoys schedule will be in the playoffs. There are 7 teams in Region 2 and only 4 teams make the playoffs. LJ will get one of those spots that leaves 3 of the remaining teams making it and 3 ot making it. So if 100% of LJ’s non region foes make the playoffs, the maximum number of teams on LJ’s schedule that could make the playoff would be 7.

They are leading the class in D, only allowing 7.7 ppg. They are 2nd in point differential at 28.3. What is keeping then from the top 10 is perception. They will have an opportunity to prove themselves shortly.

November is coming and all those degrading remarks from others will rear it’s ugly head in the first round.

Sportsnut Camden is 52-8 the past 5 years in the highest classification AAAAA and AAAAAA combined with titles in 08 and 09. Lovejoy is in their second year in the highest classification. Trying to figure out your point in your 1:34 post. You had 1 championship game in the highest classification, and you lost. Your record this year is with mediocre teams, the loss is to a top tier team. Again what is your point when your region is one of the weakest in the highest classification. Reminds some of Camden’s automatic home playoff games when they were in region 3. Stick to game facts and leave records out of it, why? Lovejoy had losing records in 09. 2010 is when they turned it around in AAAA ball. This is about highest classification ball. So in actuality Lovejoy is 20-3 in the highest classification.

Sportsnut

@ Really == Camden wasn’t part of the conversation.
Every AAAAAA school is in it’s 2nd year of the highest classification.
My point was intended for the poster that I was communicating with at the time.
Yes, we played for the title in 12′ and lost to Norcross.
We play who we are assigned to play.
The conversation was not about region strength.
The facts are what the are.
20-3 sounds good to me.
Lovejoy began football in1989 and the first varsity year was 90′. They open in AAAA, the highest class. They played there until 99′ and went to AAAAA, the highest class, in 00′. they played there until 05′ and went down to AAAA for the 06′ and 07′ school years. In 08′, they were back in AAAAA, where they played for 2 years. In 10′, they once again played in AAAA, playing for the title in 11′. AAAAAA was established and they moved up with all the former AAAAA schools and again played for the crown in 12′.

What, might I ask is your point?

From 97′ to 04′, Lovejoy was in the playoffs. The only blemish was 00′, when we went 7-3 in a ten team region and did not make it. We accept the losing in 05′ -09′, due to Mundy’s Mill high school opening 5 miles away. During those years before MM opened, from 97′ to 04′, Lovejoy was 69-23.

2012 playoff results: (no scores) Tri-Cities, Marietta, North Gwinnett, North Cobb and lost to Norcross.
2011 playoff results: (no scores) Upson-Lee, Kell, Ware County, Warner Robins and lost to Tucker.

We defend our house. We have not lost at home since 10′.

Now that you have a little more history of Lovejoy football, maybe you can go beyond the same area’s that others try to point out. There is no shame in our game.

Thanks for the Lovejoy history. Don’t ever like to hear folks blame bad seasons on new schools. Also why the wavering from 4 A to 5 A and back then jump to 6 A from 4 A? I expect Lovejoy to have run in the playoffs as I do with more than a hand full of teams. I think that this year will be more competitive than in years past. With that being said, the mainstays will be there in the final 2 rounds.

Keep sleeping on Lovejoy go ahead an sleep. This is a very very good football team that has won some very close games and are hitting their stride in their weak region as they get much of their defense back. As far as Camden County, they’ll be there and that is for sure. Don’t let the close scores and lack of passing (although they do need to pass it more) lull you to sleep. McEachern will shake of the North Cobb loss and North Cobb trip up somewhere. North Gwinnett still is the team to beat hands down.

Sandy Creek is going to be just fine. I understand the love affair with Carrollton but they will meet before the regular season closes so that will end that! Griffin and Monroe Area have helped up the thought that Sandy Creek could be beat.

@Really???? other schools opening and pulling talent is a VERY REAL issue in high school football/sports. Some overcome it better than others. Look at Archer this year, they pulled from Grayson 5 years ago. Grayson is now struggling (yea they lost all those players from last season), Archer is “coming out of nowhere”, not really they have the players Grayson would have had and they actually throw the football. If there was no Archer, Grayson would be “reloading” vs rebuilding so it is real and depending on the demo and the area effects each is differently. McEachern had those down years for sure when Hillgrove opened so even though you don’t like to hear it it is real! North Gwinnett hung tough and have a heck of a coach to get them through when Lanier opened and pulled from them.

Also believe one AAAAAA to watch is East Coweta. Ask Lovejoy and Archer??? Also looking fwd to going to the Carrollton vs Sandy Creek game. After watching both teams live I think Carrollton is 10 points better. Griffin might have the best offense in Georgia. Callaway have the best Junior in the State. He is a beast at WR. Heard Co RB/DB Duranta Dunston is the most underrated player in 2015. East Coweta Markell Boston is the most underrated player in 2014 class. Newnan is the most underachieving team in AAAAAA. Hardaway HS and Alexander HS has two of the top backs in Georgia and both are juniors.

Well it’s Monday morning!…I waited to post to think about the game a bit…A lot of words come to mind but disappointing seems to be the best. If you read my post the week before about the EAST / HIRAM game you would have seen where I said EVERYTHING was FLAT…The team seemed to be just going thru the motions, players were standing around talking, and for a HOME game in “THE BONEYARD” the folks in the stands were QUIET and the HOME side barely half full! Well EAST was able to hang on and win against a 1/6 HIRAM team going nowhere BUT…

Well it carried over to the ROME game and there was WAY less than 1/3 of the Visitors side filled for the game and the team again looked FLAT! EAST came out and played sloppy from the start, dropped passes, mistakes that resulted in penalties, fumbles, a ball hiked over the QB’s head, and again a “O” line that cannot keep the opposing defense out of the backfield long enough for the QB to set up!!! EAST could have won this game…ROME did NOT beat EAST…EAST gave this game away!!!

ROME at 3 / 3 was hungry and needed this game BAD while EAST even at 5 / 1 also needed this game to stay even with NORTH, SOUTH, and ALLATOONA. With this loss and the way EAST is now playing the schedule does not look good. EAST has games remaining against SOUTH PAULDING at 6 / 1, LITHIA SPRINGS at 0 / 7, and ALLATOONA at 6 / 1…With this loss EAST opened the door for ROME to take the final # 4 spot in the playoffs as ROME has games left against LITHIA SPRINGS, VILLA RICA, & WOODLAND BARTOW…

EAST can VERY EASILY end up at 6 / 4…6 / 4!!!!! After being the UNDEFEATED Region Champions last year!!! EAST hasn’t missed the playoffs but one time (2009) in recent years and that was during the 2 year stretch when they moved up to the then highest classification AAAAA!!!
You could see this coming as EAST was showing NO consistent improvement even after getting the starting QB back…

I am NOT going to go on another rant about the current coach as there is NOTHING that can be done about him…BUT that is where this problem directly lies…He is not a motivator, cannot handle this team and take it to the next level. Having this coach on the sidelines has caused a promising season to go down in flames and it only takes a casual look at the stands to see how the community support has fallen off,

@ GAMER…you are right about EAST being just average but you are wrong about the reason…EAST still has the players and the talent to compete but they are missing the HEART to do so…It’s not going to be the kids that cost EAST their winning tradition…it’s the HEAD COACH!!!!

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

GO RAIDERS!!!!

North Cobb upsets two top ten teams in two straight weeks. Barring injuries they should be Region 4 champions. Even a loss in their three games would give them the region, since they have beaten Hillgrove and McEachern and those two have beaten Marietta, the most likely challenge to North Cobb remaining. Campbell may have the best player in the state and he goes both ways but that has not translated into region wins for them. Pebblebrook has not won a region game. Those three are the remaining North Cobb opponents. McEachern and Hillgrove play each other in their last regular season game to probably decide second place in the region. After seeing both against North Cobb, I think either could win that game.

@sportsnut Gotta love the way you hold down the fort! It’s ok, we’ll just win our region and have 3 more home games and make our way deep in the playoffs. See when I was in school, we had that second round hump! We couldn’t do it. Every year same thing, now that we’ve gotten past that, It’s just about making plays. Also, someone said Lovejoy was outcoached in that game against Norcross last year. No, Norcross was supposed to have better RB, QB, DBs, and skill positions and Lovejoy came and punched them in the mouth because everyone was reading these blog comments about how good they were and how lucky we were to be there. We weren’t outcoached, Norcross made ONE big play. Call it fate, luck, or just skill, but Hughes outcoached Maloof that whole game. That pass down the sideline was defended, the kid went for the interception instead of the tackle. Norcross kids showed resiliency and didn’t give up. Lovejoy took the foot off the gas and relied on the defense to make plays that they’ve made all season. Not a bad move but they loss, learning experience!

@ Ballcoach == My dreams are dreams, not nightmares. I guess that is what you have when it comes to your team winning. We may have struggled with the only 2 teams that at full strength last season but we won. We don’t care if they had players hurt, we had a game to play and play we did. Lovejoy scored 7 times Friday and only one was Preston. That means we have more than just him.

@Really == You can’t help but accept the opening of MM as reason for Lovejoy’s slide. It is what it is. Just like others, we have had the option of playing up or down because of our numbers. The rest of the reasons you would not understand. I know you wouldn’t because you don’t even understand losing 1/3 of your students and many athletes to another school that is opening 5 miles away.

@ NGHS09 == Yeah, that was a good post by Ballcoach. What was so good about it. He made a point for me. Two teams at full strength in the playoffs last season and we beat both. North has those two games left and you say nothing is for sure. Well, we will be there and that is for sure. Tell me, how do I get carried away. I have not said Lovejoy was better, never said they would beat anyone, never said the would win state. You guy’s don’t like having to defend your team and you want me to be your whipping post. Beat us and you can have all the bragging rights you deserve.

Right now, I am in the drivers seat when it comes to you and those we beat last season.

Its too bad that Sportsnut’s team is in a region where he doesn’t have anything to talk about or worry about during the region games part of the schedule. so he just bloviates incessantly about everyone else who has real games and reminds us of the coming playoffs.

Of course the playoffs are a magic time for someone like Sportsnut where they will be tested against teams that are able to fog a mirror. But for those of us who play teams of playoff caliber through region schedule and then get to do it again in the playoffs, this Region 2 bloviation is just tiresome.

Sportsnut probably wishes his team didn’t have to take a break from football every week until the playoffs, but he has no control over that. But you would think that the person with the least to talk about would bloviate less…

@ LHS33 == Nice to hear from you. I don’t think these other posters are open minded enough to think someone other than their team is capable of winning. @ RobfromNorcross == I talk a lot because that is what this forum is for. As I stated before, 7 of the teams on our schedule will be playoff participants. We play who we are assigned to play. We win. The playoffs come around and we play who is up next and we win. It does not matter. You used the “fog the mirror” line as a description of the teams in our region in a negative manner and now you use it to describe others outside our region in a positive manner. What’s wrong? You are still talking about Lovejoy. Although we lost, we are the team that has made it to the pinnacle of high school football in the State of Georgia for two consecutive years. Knocking you out was a joy and we loved it. Dang, there goes that inference again, Lovejoy.

Hey Sportsnut….I will give you an example of schools opening 5 miles away. Summerville HS in SC (John McKissick is the winningest coach at any football level with over 600 wins) they opened Ft Dorchester and SUmmerville kept winning. They opened Ashley Ridge and they kept on winning. They opened Cane Bay and they kept winning. They have had 2 losing seasons in 59 years and none of them during this time. Class AAAA (highest in SC) and playoffs every year. 3 other schools and a private school (who won their state championship) and the Summerville Greenwave just kept winning. Stop making excuses for Lovejoy. They are pretenders. I called Milton, then I called Etowah. Do I have to call Lovejoy next?

@ RobfromNorcross == Tell me, how many teams make the playoffs from each region? Given your answer, that would mean Lovejoy plays playoff bound teams in region, right?
Now another question. When the playoffs start, who does Lovejoy have to play? Given your answer, that would mean Lovejoy gets to do it again in the playoffs, right? I mean, face playoff teams.
Isn’t that the equivalent of what you proclaim for your team?

I could talk (bloviate) much more but I am not the type to espouse the achievements of our kids as individuals. We are a team. Each and every time you address me, I will respond. I will not back away from any, any conversation unless it is not about football. You know how some times you might run across something that is just there? No moving it. No getting around it. That is me. You should all know by now that I am not the one to be pushed around, put down, played with or other wise confronted in any way without firing back. It will never stop. As I have said many times before, I take on all comers and will never give up. So bring it as often as you like. I will be here and ready to roll. All this is about football and being honest, I would probably fit better in region 1 but I am here. Live with it !

@camden and colquitt fans

You both played and beat Tift. What’s your honest assessment of that team. Improving, long ways from from your teams or is the gap closer that was a couple years ago ?

@ Camden 2013 == That has nothing to do with this situation. You can call Lovejoy if you wish. If you mean calling a loss, be my guess. If you mean calling the school, the # is 770-473-2920.

@ RobfromNorcross == The knocking out was in my head for NGHS09. Sorry about that. Now. About region 4. Everyone thought that Mac was the top gun. I said it in the blogs Thursday or Friday that North would beat them. Why? I know what type team North has. I talked to Tyler last season after the Lovejoy game and I knew they would be back. I had them in my preseason top 10. To beat them, you have to outscore them. They have some talented kids in Queen, Albright and Herrod.

Next is Mac. They have speed to spare and gifted athletes. Their qb runs the read option very well and this must be stopped. First, take away the dive. your DE must be disciplined. They are not as good a passing team and that will be their weak spot, not being able to throw when needed. They might as well be running the wing-T.

I have not seen South Cobb play and they are a total mystery to me. Hillgrove can be beat by Rockdale, Alcovy or Newton. Neither Marietta nor Harrison, in my opinion could play with the top 4 from region 2.

@ Camden2013 == You had better hope the playoff projections that the AJC ran don’t hold up. If they do, you will get East Coweta. They gave you a little fight before and now they are better. Given this is a down year for Camden, just as it is for many, this is a bad year to catch them in the first round.

Sportsnut – there is a big difference between playoff caliber teams and playoff bound teams. you can look it up yourself in the encyclopedia under the heading “GA Region 2-AAAAAA Football”

There is a difference in every thing I say and what you say. Logic would dictate that if a team makes the playoffs, they are a playoff caliber team. You are digging, aren’t you? Nothing left to throw?

Did you not read my answer to your request for ways to beat region 4 teams? Does that qualify as legit reasoning or is it nothing because it came from Sportsnut?

Excellent logic Sportsnut. “To beat them, you need to outscore them”. What an epiphany… You shouldn’t give away State secrets so easily.

The fact is that the 2, 3 and 4 seeds are playoff bound because the rules say that every region gets 4 teams to the playoffs. That doesn’t make them good teams but of course you know that.
