List/Trivia/Quote: Welsh has most seasons as coach in Georgia


Here’s proof that Lincoln County coach Larry Campbell doesn’t hold every state coaching record that has something to do with longevity and quantity. The late former Thomson coach Luther Welsh, who retired after the 2010 season, coached more seasons in Georgia than any other head coach. Welsh’s first head coachng job in Georgia was in 1955 at Warrenton. The list includes coaches from the Georgia Independent School Association and the Georgia Interscholastic Association.

Aside from football, in what sports did Norcross, Gainesville, Sandy Creek, Buford, Jefferson and Eagle’s Landing Christian win state championships in the 2012-13 academic season? (Answer Monday)

Answer to Thursday’s question: Emanuel County Institute was the team that defeated Johnson County 3-0 in the 1979 regular season. Johnson County, featuring Herschel Walker, played ECI three times that season, winning twice, including the region title game, and won the Class A championship.

Sandy Creek’s other state title was in volleyball. Those young lady’s are getting it done. Since the 07/08 season they have won state 3 times and been runner up twice in volleyball.
