ELCA 32 Our Lady of Mercy 6 …… tough and physical game tonight. I will say this, if OLM keeps playing hard ….. they will beat Darlington … finish 5-5 … make the playoffs …. and you better hope your team doesn’t has to play them.

ELCA/OLM, a lot closer than it should have been. Refs were the worst I’ve ever seen, both ways ! Very disappointed to see OLM walk off the field without shaking hands the way they did !!! Not a very good show of anything !!!

Pisgah beat Whitefield, 39-7. Sloppy start, Whitefield played tough. Was 14-7 at half. Pisgah’s D held even with a few injuries. Sets up a big game against Mount Paran next week.

Did you forget to report that Kings Ridge was ahead 27 to 0 at the half, and that Penny Hart also had three pass interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns of 30 and 50 yards?

Robert jones, STC is not a machine. He’s covering the entire Class A. He can’t give you every single stat. It’s a round up, not an depth summary.

Thanks for sticking up for me! Robert Jones, I don’t do the “Roundup” on Friday night’s. That’s handled by the good folks back at the AJC Mothership.

Innocent:

After the near melee toward the end of the game, and continued jawing back and forth afterward (by both sides), OLM’s Coach Earwood didn’t want to risk an all out brawl during the post game handshake line, so he had his staff shake hands but told his players to head to the locker room.

But you’re right about one thing. Let’s just say the officiating crew had a less than stellar evening.

Swamp:

Dalton Etheridge and the ELCA O-Line are should be co-Region Players of the Year. Very impressive to say the least. The program at OLM is still on the incline, moving to third-best in Region 5, one of the deepest and most competitive in Georgia. This ain’t your grandfather’s Mercy anymore … but still not ready to knock off the likes of ELCA.

@ STC …. I think that was a good call by Coach Earwood to send his players to the locker room …. tensions were high at the end of the game. Spectators ( fans ) not knowing why he did that might think it was classless, but Coach Earwood and staff are great coaches and very good men.
Thanks for the compliments on the O-line and QB Dalton Etheridge. I know every team has their “horses” and I really want to see RB Garnett at Aquinas, but I think Etheridge is the Class A player of the year. I’ve been fortunate to see him play since 5th grade. He has “it” ….. a will to win, a true leader and a very good young man.
As far as OLM, I’ve known they were a good football team, but seeing them for the 2nd time ( against two very good football teams ) … they are one of the best teams in Class A ….. period !!

On a sadder note, 2 religious institutions can’t shake hands at the end of a stupid football game?

Swamp I am glad to hear your comments. I felt like I was getting killed for giving OLM the credit I think they deserved. You should get ready for a test (NOT SAYING ELCA IS IN TROUBLE.) Pace has some men playing for them that is all I can say. OLM I felt had good boys with size and speed. Pace has that plus a couple of MEN. There were some times it took half or more of our team to bring one guy down. Usually, you score with 36 seconds left and you feel good the game is over not last night. 30 of the longest second I have ever had. But as I have said before I am not sure how we are doing it but I still wouldn’t bet again us.

I would like to get back to playing teams outside our region.

@ LanFan …. Yes, I’ve seen Pace play this year. They do have some serious “playmakers” …. RB is a stud, the QB is an athlete, and they have a “few” WR’s. They are a good football team. Like STC has said, Region 5 is for real.

@ STC……..I understand that point of view, but I don’t think that was expressed to Coach Gess after the game and I would like to think that both sides could control their players & keep anything from happening afterwards.I know these boys get fired up and get hot headed, but at the end of the game they can shake hands & say good game, whether they mean it or not. We had a similar situation with Holy Innocence & afterwards everyone prayed together at mid-field. I guess every situation is different & maybe it’s for the best, but you don’t want it to end like that. All that aside, you’re right, OLM is on the rise and has some quality players all over. I love your QB & #5 is a stud. You guys should be in good shape for the next few years. Best of luck to your son & his team the rest of the year.

Single A Refs Are Horrible Horrible Horrible

My blog screen name lived up to my expectations last night just like the preceding weeks. Sure hope Gary Phillips, when he takes over in June, and crew will stop discriminating against single a schools due to their school size by allowing the referee associations to send the bottom of the barrel to officiate the single a games. Class 4,5 and 6A wouldn’t stand for this incompetence, why should single a schools? Hopefully, this isn’t a money issue since ghsa membership fee is based on the number of students per school. A 6a school membership fee is considerably higher than a single a membership fee. If this awful officiating takes place in all single a sports then I really don’t understand why the principals don’t get together and demand some changes. It is a shame that every week a single a football team is denied a victory due to poor officiating. Probably happens in other classifications as well to a smaller extent. If your team hasn’t experienced this yet then consider your team lucky. The ultimate goal of the ghsa should be to have game outcomes based on a teams level of play and coaching and not a referees’ blown call or in most cases multiple blown calls. Not happening right now in single a football. Sorry for bloviating.

If JOCO starts as slow next week against ECI as they did this past Friday against Treutlen, they will get blown off the field.

I called last night as JOCO 32 and Treutlen 13. (Actual was JOCO 34 and Treutlen 13).

I don’t have a real good feeling about the game this week.

I will give my pick later this week.

If ELCA gets the ball in PLAYMAKERS hands and stops wasting touches and carries on DADDY-BALL NON-PLAYMAKERS, no team in Class A or AA can compete with them. It’s funny how the game plan changes from Washington County to OLM. I was at the Miami Central, Booker T. Washington game, one of the biggest rivalries in high school football, number 1 ranking on the line plenty of trash talk. But at the end of the day it’s just a game, those guys shook hands and congratulated each other because they respect each other. ELCA lined up to shake hands, OLM showed a lack of respect by not shaking hands, no excuses! This was not a close, hard fought game, this was a BLOWOUT! It’s sad to see people take a moral victory out of not getting 60 put on them.

Zone3:

Pretty hard to be as successful as ELCA has been by playing “daddy-ball.” That’s disparaging to Coach Gess and the work he and his staff put in at ELCA. It’s also abject nonsense.

OLM players were told to go to the locker room by their coach, who did not want to risk any further confrontations during the post game handshake. He and his coaches shook hands with ELCA. There was no lack of respect.

The game was 12-0 at halftime and ended up being a blowout. But it was indeed hard-fought and physical. And I can assure you that OLM has moved beyond accepting “moral victories,” and fully expects to compete with the ELCAs of the world.

Perfection was only found one time in history. Why is it that some feel like because its a Christian school everyone is beyond reproach. I thought Christians were folks that proclaimed to be sinners and needed a savior? OLM just made a practical decision that was best for their team. I’m sure they are in the business of building men just like ELCA. This sometimes happens and coaches decide to take a different route. A coaches job is not only to teach but to protect. I applaud both coaches for who they are and the programs they are building. Go ELCA and OLM continue to build young men into great men!

@ AA Fan………..Like Love Friday said, you obviously haven’t seen ELCA play. ELCA could not only compete in AA, it would pretty much be business as usual !!! Blow Out after Blow Out ! Lamar Co. is really good, but don’t think for a second that ELCA couldn’t hang 40 on them !!!
