Carrollton 52, Shaw 7: Carrollton rushed for 275 yards and five scores. Malik Sheppard rushed for 98 yards and two scores and Trey Chivers had 74 yards and two scores for the Trojans. Carrollton led 38-7 at the half. The Trojans held Shaw to just two third-down conversions in 10 attempts.

Chestatee 20, Lanier 17 (2OT): In a thrilling double-overtime game, the visiting War Eagles followed a Lanier field goal with a Wyatt Burgess 3-yard touchdown run. The War Eagles’ special teams sent the game to overtime when Will Fayson returned a blocked punt 15 yards for a touchdown with four minutes to play. Disaster was averted in the first overtime when Khalil Cantrell recovered a ball fumbled on the goal line for a touchdown.

Griffin 55, North Clayton 14: Jaquez Parks completed 11-of-14 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 108 yards with three scores. Running back Malik Miller rushed for 57 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns. The Bears led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter and 48-0 at the break.

Marist 47, Redan 6: The host War Eagles took a 37-0 halftime lead which forced a running clock for the entire second half. Five different Marist players rushed for touchdowns and quarterback Chase Martenson threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Trey Oates. Marist rushed for 297 yards and held Redan to 139 total yards.

Sandy Creek 52, Alexander 42: Isaac Zico’s second touchdown reception gave visiting Alexander a 42-38 lead with six minutes remaining. Alexander’s Mikell Lands-Davis ran in two touchdowns and threw a 51-yard touchdown. Sandy Creek’s Delvin Weems rushed for four touchdowns and Eric Sweeney found the endzone once. Patriots’ Cole Garvin tossed two touchdowns including a 69-yard pass to Demarre Kitt.

Our motto is, “There’s no defense like a good offense.” :) Alexander came to play. Half of our team didn’t, the half on defense. I would like to say that this is all part of some master plan to lull Carrollton into overconfidence, but that would be a stretch.

GRIFFIN DID NOT PLAY A COMPLETE GAME TONIGHT…NOT HAPPY WITH SECOND STRING GIVING UP 14 POINTS!! WE NEED NO INJURIES IN NEXT FEW WEEKS AND I THINK WE WILL BE READY FOR PLAYOFFS IF SPALDING DON’T THROW ANY CHEAP SHOTS AT US!!!!!

Having seen Griffin Carrollton and Sandy Creek live in action I would rank Carrollton number 1 and Griffin/Sandy Creek tied for two. Carrollton defense will not stop but slow down S C offense. I can’t see S C defense stopping either Griffin or Carrollton offense. Carrollton will beat Sandy Creek by 10-14 points on November 1. As a local football fan and not a fan of either school I’m looking forward to going to Carrollton on November 1.

The Sandy Creek/Alexander game should not have been that close (52-42). SC was on their way to putting the game away in the 2nd half when they went up by 17. Questionable penalties caused two touchdowns to come back; momentum killers. SC was on their way to going up by 24. But give Alexander credit. THEY CAME TO PLAY. Lance-Davis is for real!! They had a great game plan and capitalized on SC penalties. They are a much better team than people give them credit for. As for SC, we have a lot to fix on defense before Carrollton.

@JustaFan, there is some truth to disiplinary actions taken against 3 defensive starters in the 1st qtr. Plus, a starting senior LB was out with an injury. This game was good for SC in the sense the kids were starting to believe the hype. The onlyu ggod thing that came out of the game was they were challenged and it was representative of what the state playoffs will be like. They will have to compete. Not just show up and expect to win at ease!

@Trojan94, Alexander has a LEGIT running back in #2, Mikell Lands-Davis. The kid is FOR REAL. Runs like Marshon Lynch with Seahawks, a BEAST! and he ius just a junior. If Carrollton can control him, SC will have trouble with Carrollton’s defense. I hihgly suggest going to see the Alx v Carrollton game.

1st Down Creek:Thanks for info-most teams have problems nowdays. Looking at all the scores and common opponents this year this game just seems weird-BUT-the bottom line is SC scored 52 points and could have been more so Carrollton is not taking this lightly. I think the Alexander game will be a measuring stick for Carrollton now. With that kind of play The #1 seed from R7 may be in for a battle(assuming Alexander is #4).

“There’s no defense like a good offense.” without your motto, you have maybe a 12 or 13th ranked team at best.

Trojans over Pats 42 to 14, maybe 21 if Carrollton plays JV in 4th.

@We have a motto – I understand you have school pride and all, and you should rep your team and hold them in high regards, but you can’t honestly think that Carrollton will blow out SC. It will probably be a high scoring game and who ever has the ball last will probably win. If you truly feel that SC is a 12th-13th ranked team, you don’t know football as much as you think.

You want to talk smack about Sandy Creek’s defense. SCHS and Carrollton to date have both played Fayette Co, Troup, and Shaw. Those 3 teams scored a combined 19 points on Sandy Creek. Carrollton gave up a combined 33 points to those three teams.

I never said Sandy Creek’s D was better than Carrollton’s did I? I just showed facts for We have a motto. Running clock, injury’s, suspension’s, bad calls, 2nd string, play calling whatever anybody wants to say those games are in the book. It is what it is. If I was a betting man which I am. As of now as much as I hate to say it I would put my money against my Patriots on Nov 1st. I’ve seen Carrollton fans say earlier in the year they would get us just because it was at Carrollton. I originally thought that was a non sense theory. As the season has gone on the game could be at the Battlefield and as much as I hate to say it if I had to put my money on it I would put my money on Carrollton. Keep in mind I would happily lose this money for a SCHS win :) . Then again a loss could serve as a wake up call for when state starts.

I hope Alexander is a better game than the last couple for Carrollon. Would be nice to have a decent game before the SC showdown.

Not sure what happened with Alexander but I’m sure all the suspentions, etc. will be done by the time SC rolls into Carrollton. It’s going to be a good one!

The key aspect for the Carrollton vs ALexandr game will be can Carrollton front 7 show that they can stop Alexander’s running game. Carrollton will win the fame because their explosive offense will not hve any resistance provided by Alexander d-fense. Howwever, if Alexander shows Carrolton has some run d-fense deficiencies, SC will run the ball with its effective run game. This allows SC to control the clock and keep Carrollton’s explosive offense on the sideline. Rushing yards allowed by Carrollton next week will be significant for the SC game.

Gilmer-looks like your chances are pretty good for an upset-Pickens gave Cedartown a close game and Gilmer may have the defense to pull it off. A Cedartown loss would mean they would likely be the #3 seed in R7 and play Carrollton or SC in the first round-interesting possibilities.

@We have a motto Surely your IQ is not this low. What team gets ranked #1 without a good offense or defense or both? That’s like saying if all of our players were crippled, we would not be ranked #1. If aliens abducted all of out players, we would not be ranked #1 either.

Last year we had a dominating offense and defense. This year our offense is still dominating, but our defense is not quite as good. Our offense occasionally has had to simply outscore the other team to make up for our defense this year. That is the point of the motto (BTW, it is not literally our motto. It is just a running joke in athletics.). The fact that I have to explain it is troublesome.

Not sure where you get your 12/13 ranking for us. I am sure it was not from any complex quantitative analysis. Even with our weaker defense, there are not 11 teams in AAAA that could hang with us. I challenge you to name them.

BEARMAN

I just hope we play the best team if we both make it to third round…whether it be Carrollton or Sandy Creek…I really think my Bears will play both a close game if not beat them. I think we are loaded on both sides of the ball…special teams is our weakest spot and we are working hard on correcting the bad coverage. As for offense we can score on anyone with a lot of D-1 players on offense and still have another year…Defense, well just wait and see…we are fast in every spot on the field. I will not predict anything but will say that AAAA has 6 to 8 good teams that I think we are as good if not better than anyone. May be the year that Griffin can say “WHO THAT MESSING WITH THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BEARS”! Good luck and let the smack talk begin…we will not back down from anyone and that means any classification!!!

Old Bear

October 21st, 2013

These Griffin Bears are something special. They are loaded with athletes who have the talent AND the academics – for the most part – to place several players in prominent D-1 programs, and our QB is a rare student-athlete for Griffin. He could probably play at a major college at another position but will probably be a a QB as an Ivy Leaguer or a cadet at the Air Force Academy. As several posters have remarked on various blogs, the Bears’ offense is one of the best in the state (at any classification). If they don’t stop themselves I doubt there is any team in AAAA that can do it (I could be wrong, but I don’t think so). My main concern is that the defense has only played a little over half of any game, and the team has gotten used to playing with a running clock in the second half. The conditioning for a full game could become a concern when the competition is more equalized in the playoffs.

I look forward to the post-season. There should be some quality football games in AAAA. It’s a very balanced classification as far as the top 10.

We have heard it all before-the coach is the only thing holding our team back from a state championship. We hear it at Carrollton too-win 12 and lose 1 and the coach is called names for the loss instead of being complimented for the wins. A team must be lucky to have all those 5 star athletes that are being ruined-Carrollton has a 5 star rarely.

Bears-I consider Griffin tied with 4 or more other teams for the top spot. We wont really know until the playoffs because like several other regions there has been no competetion within the region and the non-region games were against weak opponents. I also predict that the Griffin-R5 game in round 3 will determine one of the state finalists.
