McEachern looks to reaffirm itself in Region 4 … Region 1 teams in must-win situations

McEachern won Region 4-AAAAA last year only to lose in the first round of the playoffs while also-ran North Cobb made it to the semifinals.

Now 7-0 and ranked No. 2 in the new season, the Indians will be eager to re-establish the region pecking order Friday when the teams meet again. North Cobb is 5-1 and unranked but coming off an impressive victory over Hillgrove.

The quarterbacks will be a focal point. McEachern’s Ty Clemons has rushed for 851 yards, which ranks third in Class AAAAAA. He’s passed for 759. North Cobb’s Tyler Queen, who has committed to Auburn, has thrown for 1,120 yards.

In 2012, McEachern beat North Cobb 49-27. McEachern had 490 yards in total offense and led 35-6 in the second quarter.

Other things to watch in AAAAAA this week:

- Four weeks ago, Coffee was 4-0 and ranked in the Top 10. Three straight region losses later and the Trojans need to beat Lowndes or probably won’t make the playoffs. Coffee last beat Lowndes in 2001.That’s 11 straight losses.

- Also in Region 1, the Valdosta-Tift County game could be an elimination bout, especially for Valdosta (4-2, 0-2). You don’t want four region losses, and Valdosta plays at third-ranked Colquitt County next week.

- Newnan (4-2) plays at Hughes (5-1) in a game between the teams with the best records in Region 3. That could decide the region title, although East Coweta (3-3, 1-0) also contends.

- Defending Region 5 champion Lassiter was virtually written off after losing to Woodstock 44-43 last month, but the following week’s win over Walton was good for Trojan souls. Lassiter will recapture the region by winning out, but Milton (5-1, 2-1) will be a tough out on Friday.

If last week’s McEachern team shows up, they should be able to handle NC. If not, . . .

Big difference between 1st and 2nd in region 4. Assuming they make it through round 1, region 4 champion plays region 1 runner-up at home. Region 4 runner-up plays region 1 champion on the road. Thanks, but no thanks, to the long bus ride.

Trap game for Valdosta, coming off an emotional loss. Still hard to believe Lowndes has beaten them 9 out of the last 10. That has to stick in the craw of Wildcat fans everywhere! I read where had it not been for the final 55 seconds in 2011 when Valdosta scored twice and recovered an on-sides kick, it would be 10 out of 10! As Fred says, Ouch!!!!!!!!!

TH- Where do you think Collins Hill will finish the regular season? Or Mill Creek?

Region 4 beat down by Region 1 last year is why Region 3 is being matched with Region 1 this year. Usually playoff brackets last for two years like region assignments. The Cobb Mafia couldn’t take a second year of being beat up by Region 1 that why the got the GHSA to change it this season. Cryin’ bitches

@ James R, are you serious? it was a 2-2 split last year between region 1 & 4. with both teams from Winnersvile goin down. And actually for a while now they have been switching playoff pairings every year not just once they realign.

@James R, First of all, the first-round region match-ups change every year, GHSA rules.Second, R4 went 2-2 against R1, including a 42-14 rout of Valdosta by North Cobb, a 30-27 win by Marietta over Lowndes, and a close loss to Colquitt by McEachern .The only R1 “beatdown” was Camden’s victory over Hillgrove, 52-17. R4 mostly gave R1 a run for it’s money. do Please do some research before spouting ignorance.

@7ADad. The critical game in the region for CH will be their last game of the regular season against Mill Creek. If they can beat North then they are automatically in, but North is probably still the 1 seed because of their win over Norcross. CH is still the 3 seed because of their loss to Norcross. If CH beats MC then they are the 3 seed. If they lose then they get into a playoff situation. That one game resolves the seeds in the Region or twists things into a gordian knot.

Big doings in region 1 Friday. Gut check time. The best region in Georgia will get closer to determining who it’s playoff representatives will be. When it is all said and done, a short few weeks from now, the rest of the state will feel their wrath after a grueling region schedule.

Yes, the State playoffs are near and we will see who has what. Region 1 is not the only one with seeding questions that remain. Region 7 will clear up also, to a certain degree.

As this happens, these blogs will get smaller. Fortunately, I have been around for the end of the season the past 2 years and look forward to another long road leading to the Dome. I hope Lovejoy is not on the short end of the many good games yet to come as we enter the second season.

Lot’s of ball left to be played and time is getting short.
Strap in and buckle up. It’s going to be a good ride !

@Marietta fan – I agree that Region 8 is at least a little down, if not a lot. Sooner or later a Cobb County team has to put five wins together come playoff time and win it all. Why that hasn’t happened already is a mystery to me. Brookwood defeating Lassiter last year? Probably as large an upset as ever in GA football. Or #1 seed McEachern being defeated 20-10 in 2009 by Brookwood after Brookwood had lost to them in the Dome? Can’t figure it out.

GwinnettDad. Cobb has had a few close calls in the last 20 years. In the early 90’s both Marietta and Mceachern were both unstoppable in the regular season and lost it come playoff time. Marietta made it to either to quarterfinal a or semis in 1994 and lost to Colquitt who eventually won the championship. Mceachern was 14-0 in ‘98 and lost at Valdosta 14-11 in the championship. Then in 2000 Harrison lost 12-7 to Parkview for the championship. Then of course you had Walton get shut out by Grayson and North Cobb’s run last year. Surprisingly no school in the county district has ever won a football championship. Marietta won in 1967 but we’re a city district

GwinnettDad – Actually, I see Coffee losing 7 in a row. Their HC proved in Fitzgerald that he can not win at this level, in Georgia. He’s a fine Christian man, a good father, and a great small school HC. But we will all know more about that this time tomorrow. If Tift and Colquitt defeat Valdosta, there’ll be a bunch of yellow cat fans wondering the same thing about their HC. Losing to Lowndes 3 out of 4 times has already caused a lot of second guessing at Bazemore/Hyder Stadium.

Bunch of big games this week. Good luck to all, and hopefully no injuries on the field or traveling to games!

Mceachern vs N. Cobb == Region 4. Should be a good game.
Coffee vs Lowndes == Region 1. Both need a win. “NEED”
Valdosta vs Tift == Region 1. Tift needs it but Valdosta needs it more for a playoff run.
Newnan vs Hughes == Region 3. Can Hughes win region again?
Lassiter vs Milton == Region 5. Both teams are trying to hang. 2nd seed is in play.
Douglas Co. vs Westlake == Region 3. The fight for 4th starts.
Grayson vs South Gwinnett == Region 8. If Grayson wants to get back, they need this.

@ Marietta fan- good post about Cobb trying to get that first elusive title. Just a couple of clarifications: Mac and Marietta were a hair away from playing each other for it all in 1991…Colquitt stopped Marietta from scoring the winning TD late in the 4th and Rodney Hudson of LaGrange broke a long TD run on 4th down to beat Mac in OT, causing a loss that was actually more sickening to me than the title game loss to Valdosta in 1998 (21-7, by the way). Mac was winning on penetration under the old GHSA format before that run…stop Hudson and the game is over.

Harrison lost 19-7 to Parkview. On the goal line going in for the TD to give them the lead, fumbled and Parkview (Dawkins, I think) broke a 99 yarder the next play from scrimmage.

I don’t know the answer to why a football title has eluded Cobb County…we are very much a mirror-image of Gwinnett County in many areas, including HS athletics. We compete very well and win many, many titles in every other sport played…yet football has not reached near the success Gwinnett has over the past 15-20 years.

Everybody notice TH picked Tift over Valdosta tonight? In today’s GHSF Daily Newsletter. Plain as day. Tift will be region 1-6A’ s 4th place team. Only way that can happen is for them to beat Valdosta tonight. Least that’s the way I’m peEking at it. (Is that correct grammar OmacG?). Well, mostly. If all that holds true, dem Cats will have fallin a long piece, as OD used to say.

By the way, Cat Doc, Dosta Dog, and 57 please tell us how long it’s been since Valdosta was shut out. Been awhile, I spect. Y’all still believing in Coach G as the 2nd Coming? Good thing y’all got Tift coming to town, stead of the other way ’round..

McEachern’s going down tonight. PTR too. Don’t count Mill Creek out yet. Grayson will be a formidable 3rd place team, in my opinion. Newton will make the 2nd tee off. Lovejoy would be number one in 5-A. Colquitt roughshod over thevPirates tonight. They will treat’em like the Seals did Captain Phillips’ Somalian Pirates! Maybe worse.

Our two schools started the Corky Kell, and McEachern is one of the few teams that have a winning record against the Broncos (that have played any amount of games), with McEachern winning four of seven. @AVikingFan – I told people…who would listen…several weeks back that the Viking Horde was not dead. They did not look particularily sharp against the Blackhats…but that was Buddha’s gift to Rush. Their win over Valdosta…while not what one would describe as pretty…was a V-I-C-T-O-R-Y (wouldn’t that be cool to put into song) none the less. Coffee will come out with guns blazing. It wll take a focused group on offense and a solid defensive plan to de-rail their “train” (sorry, couldn’t help myself). I think Lowndes wins over in Jardine. Not really sure of the outcome down in Bazemore-Hyder. Tift is tough. And of course, my poor, tiny, little undersized Hawgs will have their hands full with them Pesky Pirates…but me and Rush firmly believe the Good Guys have it covered.

@GwinnettDad – Sir, I am elated that SOMEBODY has good things to say about McEachern. I can only hope that they make those much needed improvements to that dump of a stadium they have up there. Can you believe…no retractable roof? Pathetic…simply pathetic.
