Class A Blog: What to watch for Friday? Pace-Landmark, Dooly County at Marion County, Athens Academy at Commerce

By S. Thomas Coleman
For the AJC

Here are three big games on Friday, along with five more worth keeping an eye on.

Pace Academy (4-2, 1-1) at No. 4 Landmark Christian (7-0, 3-0). Coming off of a bye week, the Knights will try to spoil homecoming in downtown Fairburn and keep their Region 5 title hopes alive. After a blistering 3-0 start, Pace dropped two in a row to First Presbyterian Day in Macon and Our Lady of Mercy in Fayetteville, but righted the ship two weeks ago with a 40-0 thumping of Strong Rock. The Knights are led by Stanford-bound DB/RB Denzel Franklin and 6-foot-4 WR Kameron Uter, along with junior QB Kevin Johnson. Landmark beat up on Strong Rock last week, 34-12. The War Eagles are looking to remain unbeaten to set up an epic clash with No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in the season finale Nov. 8. Landmark is led by sophomore QB Stockton McGuire and senior LB/FB William Higbie. Landmark won last season, 38-12.

Dooly County (4-2, 3-0) at No. 7 Marion County (6-0, 3-0). After a rough 0-2 start, Dooly County, the defending public school runner-up, has reeled off four straight wins with the defense leading the charge. The Bobcats are allowing just 6 points per game during the winning streak. Marion County’s defense has been stout this season as well, yielding an average of just 7 points per game with two shutouts. The winner will most likely be the Region 4 champion, and earn an automatic spot in the public school playoffs. Marion County won last year’s game, 12-7.

Athens Academy (4-2, 2-1) at Commerce (4-3, 2-1). Both teams have already lost to No. 6 Prince Avenue Christian, and so the Region 8 championship is most likely by the boards. Commerce appears to be returning to form after a rough couple of seasons. The Tigers battled PAC last week but gave up too many big plays – three touchdowns of over 50 yards – and eventually succumbed to the Wolverines, 28-14. Athens Academy needs a win to increase its power ranking points. The Spartans currently sit at No. 14, with the top 16 advancing to the state playoffs. Athens Academy was dominated by PAC , 41-7, back on Oct. 4. The Spartans beat Commerce last season, 45-7, en route to a undefeated regular season and the Region 8 title.

Region 2: No. 10 Clinch County (3-3, 2-0) at Wilcox County (2-4, 1-2)

Region 3: Treutlen (3-3, 2-1) at No. 5 Johnson County (6-0, 1-0)

Region 5: Our Lady of Mercy (2-4, 2-1) at No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (5-0, 2-0)

Region 6: No. 9 Mt. Paran Christian (5-1, 2-0) at Fellowship Christian (4-2, 1-1)

Region 7: Wilkinson County (3-3, 2-0) at No. 2 Aquinas (6-0, 3-0)

Dooly Cty will hand their foes their first loss they are really tough, but it will be a grind. Marion Cty is undefeated and tough but I think they have met their match. No so sure about this one but will keep my prediction.

Both Commerce and Athens Academy are struggling but I see Commerce coming out on top. Commerce’s offense can move the ball a little better than Athens Academy. Athens has a stout defense but I see Commerce doing enough on offence to win.

If Landmark can get their offense moving then they will probably dominate Pace Academy. Pace has great players but they have to block and tackle and become a team. This is where they have to improve. Landmark has the defense to play with anyone from line to linebackers to secondary. They are fast off of the line and disciplined and just a bunch of freshman and sophomores that can play!

I’m heading to Fairburn for the Pace game and I’m pretty excited. This game starts a very tough 3 week stretch, with Landmark, Holy Innocents and ELCA. It’d be nice to somehow win 2 of those games.

Landmark should win this game but maybe we can come out and pull the upset. Gonna have to be on top of our game and hopefully run the ball more. Although that doesn’t seem likely with the QB’s dad as offensive coordinator.

Destroy Pace…not going to happen unless Pace self destructs! Pace is a good football team…they were last year as well. Look for a great ball game and close score. 17-13

If OLM plays to their potential and gets a break or 2, ELCA will know they had a fight on their hands tonight!!

@cat man…… that’s a real profound statement. You should work for HSPN. That’s the hypothetical sports programming network. I’m gonna try it now. If ELCA plays like it always does & OLM plays like it always does, ELCA hangs at least 40 on OLM ! Don’t gauge your game against ELCA off of a couple of games you should have won, or a win against Pace. ELCA is a whole another animal ! Pace will see soon enough !

@ Lizard Swamp ….. it’s a shame when someone tries to throw you under the bus and they can’t even get your name right! I want all Landmark fans to know that those comments are not mine.

@ STC ….. please take a look at the email of “LIZARD SWAMP” have have a talk with them …….. Thanks!

@Swamp Lizard – no worries. Your comments are always given in a way that makes sense. I don’t agree with my fellow Landmark companion that tonight will be easy for Landmark (I hope it is). I think if we play our game that we’ll be fine, but Pace has talent that cannot be overlooked.

You know what they say “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery”. Maybe you have a fan…..

Just stop Dalton Ethridge and you stop that offensive machine OLM. Problem is he is very difficult to read and tackle. He is the best at it right now in single A. He is the driving force of the ELCA machine…they have obvious other good players but Dalton is the X factor!

@ Landmark2012 ….. you are 100% right, just play your game! Pace is talented but Landmark is “seasoned” and very well coached. I think you’ll ( Landmark ) will be fine tonight …… as Al Davis used to say with the Oakland Riaders ….. “Just Win Baby” !!

Yes, someone is playing games with the old Class A Blog! I guess at a certain level that’s flattering. But I’ve had to delete a couple of impostors!

“Lizard Swamp,” cut it out. Use your own screen name please. Your next one will be deleted.

@Joco 88 just joking around every one in TC wants joco undefeated, healthy and also hoping for a sale out crowd. So when we beat y’all by 28 and jump to the head of the line where we belong, then their will be no doubt that the dawgs are back.

You got to give it to Pace, hell of a game. Honestly controlled that game and deserved to win. Great game by both teams! (And where was Sam Dobbs) (he had 6 yards)
