Archer 41 Central Gwinnett 20

By Robert Haddocks

Gabe Tiller threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns to lead Archer to a 41-20 victory over Central Gwinnett and keep the Tigers undefeated. Dylan Singleton and KJ Parmer each scored twice for Archer.

Archer is 7-0, 5-0 in Region 8-AAAAAA. The seven wins are the most in the school’s five-year history.

The Tigers jumped out to a 20-0 lead and the defense contained a talented Central Gwinnett offense, holding the Black Knights to 84 total yards in the first half. The defense registered seven sacks on the night.

“We played great defense,” said coach Andy Dyer. “They rallied over and over in the first half. We were able to score quick and when the defense responded, that was huge.”

The Tigers took advantage of Central’s run-blitz defense, which left receivers open down the field, the coach said. Parmer, who had a game-high 100 yards on six receptions, led the air attack and tight end Connor Redmond also was a presence in the seam. He caught three balls, catching three balls, including a touchdown, as Tiller placed passes where only Tigers could catch them. The junior quarterback completed 25 of 34 passes for 308 yards.

“He was great and the receivers went up and made huge catches,” Dyer said of Tiller. “He had a night, a great night. It was one of those nights for him.”

Redmond’s touchdown came on Archer’s first drive of the second half and gave the Tigers a 27-7 lead. Central, behind quarterback Eric Forrest (19-30-196) and running back Nigel Adams (117 yards) battled, but never seriously threatened.

Central came out and sharp and took its opening drive of the game 80 yards in 12 plays, mixing pass and run. Tiller found Singleton free in the end zone for an easy 3-yard touchdown. Tiller’s second touchdown toss came on a short pass to Kyle Davis, who broke a tackle and ran down the sideline for a 21-yard score. The Tigers took a 20-0 lead on their next possession with Singleton punching it in on a 1-yard run. The Tigers are averaging more than 33 points a game this season.

With seconds left in the first half, Central took advantage of a short field and Nate Hartford finished the 30-yard drive with a 1-yard run to trim the lead to 20-7.

Archer travels to Berkmar next week; Central hosts Brookwood.
