Important area matches mark the slate as the state playoffs are almost a week away. In Class AA, Wesleyan dominated Rabun County (25-8, 25-6) and Greater Atlanta Christian topped Jefferson (25-21, 25-20) and will face each other in the Area 6-AA championship match on Thursday.
In Class AAAAAA, Chattahoochee will face Johns Creek on Wednesday in the Area 5-AAAAAA tournament. South Forsyth remains ahead of the Cougars and Gladiators with a 7-0 area record.
Hillgrove will open up the Area 3-AAAAAA tournament on Thursday as a No. 3 seed where it will face No. 6 Campbell. Hillgrove closed out the regular season Tuesday with wins over Creekview and Allatoona. Also in Class AAAAAA, North Cobb topped Sonoraville in three sets (25-15, 23-25, 25-15), but fell to Walton in straight sets in the backend of the tri-match (25-19, 25-17).
In Class AAA, North Oconee posted a win over Oconee County and then capped off the tri-match with a sweep over Jackson County. Area 6-AAA has North Oconee, Hart County, Morgan County and Oconee County all battling for the top seeds. Class AAA No. 1 Blessed Trinity held off Buford in straight sets Tuesday (25-18, 25-18). Buford split after besting East Hall (25-12, 25-16) and with the win over the Wolves, Blessed Trinity moves to 54-7 on the season and faces St. Pius on Thursday. The Golden Lions defeated Blessed Trinity on Oct. 1 (25-21, 27-25) and St. Pius senior Leah Hardeman had 10 kills in the victory. Hardeman will be matched up again with Blessed Trinity’s Molly McAlvany and this will be a great pre-playoff test for both teams.
In Class A, Walker topped Darlington and Mt. Paran Christian on Tuesday and will play in its area championship on Thursday. Mt. Paran could get a rematch with the Wolverines in the championship if they can battle through the losers bracket. Walker’s Brooke Warner paced the team Tuesday with 37 kills and added 12 digs in the two victories.
