Poll Talk: Collins Hill enters Top 10; No. 1 Tucker-No. 2 Stephenson showdown looms

Highlights of the new Top 10 …

- A victory over fifth-ranked Peachtree Ridge kept Collins Hill in a tie for first place with No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett in Region 7-AAAAAAA. It also lifted the Eagles (5-0) into the Top 10. Collins Hill (5-0, 3-0) plays at home Friday against eighth-ranked Norcross, the defending AAAAAA champion. Both are in deep Region 7, which has seen five different teams ranked this season.

- Also joining the AAAAAA Top 10 is Valdosta. Out are Peachtree Ridge and Milton.

- Etowah, the only unbeaten team not in the Top 10 in the highest classification, knocked off Milton 24-15 but remained unranked. Etowah plays in a region whose strength is less certain. Region 5-AAAAAA was 0-for-4 in the playoffs last season.

- Other new teams in the rankings are Lee County for South Paulding in AAAAA, Burke County for Stockbridge in AAAA, Blessed Trinity for Pierce County in AAA and Emanuel County Institute for Savannah Christian in A.

- The top game this week will be in DeKalb County as 1 Tucker plays No. 2 Stephenson in AAAAA.

Let me kick off the big CATS game in Dekalb county, this week TUCKER vs STEPHENSON. The most talked about, trash talking, heated game against cross town rivals in the state. I’m grilling Tiger meat today on the grill, all this week it’s tiger tiger tiger on the menu; I peeped Stephenson menu for this coming week.
Monday it’s grill (TIGERS) on bun…
Tuesday it’s (TIGER PIZZA)
Wednesday it’s (TIGER’S SOUP)
Thursday it’s (FILET A TIGER)
Friday at Hallford stadium it’s going to be (A TIGERS BEAT DOWN SMOTHERED WITH SEASONED JAAAAAGUARS SAVORY SAUCE)

GO STEPHENSON JAGUARS AND REGION 6AAAAA, THE SEC OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL & #1 IN THE STATE…

Hickory Dickory Doc
Tucker & Stephenson do rock
The tigers did knock on the door
but still could not score
Hickory Dickory Doc

Hickory Dickory Doc
Tucker is #1 “NOT”
they thought they will win
but Stephenson beat them again

Yes!!!! It’s time for battle of unbeatins! U have the number 1 ranked averaging 56 points a game and allowing 8 points per game tucker tigers vs the number 2 ranked averaging 45 points per game and allowing 6 points per game Stephenson jaguars!!! It’s a championship preview with 2 contenders! Region title on the line! Home field advantage for the playoffs on the line! Last year game was a good game with Stephenson winning 13-6… Both teams have gotten better Stephenson has 2 major tucker transfers on the roster so you know the game will be emotional! LET’S PLAY SOME FOOTBALL Y’ALL!!!

Etowah has taken care of every obsitcle put in front of them and still no respect. They domniated Milton Friday night and the score was a lot closer than the game actually was. They did that without their starting QB, starting RB, and two starting corners and still dominated Milton. You don’t have to give them respect because they earn it! Instead of ranking teams on thier current proformance this year, you rank teams based on program history. Having a backup RB run for 329 yards and 2 td’s against the 7th ranked team in the state I guess holds no water.GO EAGLES!!!

I hope Camden lays it on Tift this weekend. Coffee is going to need it in the battle for the 4th seed. Like to see Lowndes beat Valdosta also. Both of those would put Coffee back in the running. (Assuming of course we do not pull a Mundys Mill against The Pirates down in Brunswick.

What a year in 1-6A!

I got a big problem with Cartersville still being ranked higher than WACO.. I know this is no surprise to anyone but Cartersville schedule has no tough teams on it.. I know if Lovett would have beat us they would have jumped to #1 so why we can’t jump to #2 … WACO played 2 state championship teams, even though we didn’t finish the ELCA game everyone saw that we was starting to control the game in the 2nd qt…Peach was a top 5 team before Baldwin beat them, then we crushed Baldwin 56-7 that next Fri..

I know it really doesn’t matter but to us it does just because a writer I want name wrote that Lovett would continue their hot streak by beating WACO.. Haters are saying that their starting QB was out but he played in last year game WACO beat them in and the defense who held SPX to just 7 points and beat all them other teams played in the game that night too.. So I need a better reason than them just being ranked higher than us when the season started…

re: Washington County – I would have no trouble with a poll that ranked WACO #2. They’ve played great. Btw, I was not the one who picked Lovett to win that game. Not that there would’ve been shame in missing that prediction. I doubt the predictor realized Lovett’s starting QB would not play.

re: Etowah – Great effort by the Eagles. I don’t object to anyone that would put Etowah in the Top 10.

But we have a choice to rank based on W-L record alone, or attempt to consider strength of schedule. Valdosta has lost to Camden County (14-10 on the road) and beaten Thomas County Central. IMO, Camden and TCC are both better than Etowah and Milton. And while that’s merely an opinion, there are no results (direct or indirect) that contradict that opinion.

I hear good things from people who have seen Ringgold, but Ringgold lost to another unranked team – Central of Carroll. And Central lost to Bremen, an unranked AA school. Hard to defend that. Both of BT’s losses are to ranked teams, and all of their wins against pretty good teams.

@Son of Waco, were you at the WACO v. ELCA game? ELCA’s defensive line was in the backfield the entire game. Other than the 1 long run by M. Hill following the horrible ref call that should have ended the drive for WACO (30 yard penalty), I bet WACO had negative yards of offense for the game. WACO is a fine team but saying they were starting to control ELCA is false. ELCA had the ball inside WACO’s 10 yard line 2 times. Who knows who would have won the game but if it was anything like the previous year where WACO was out of gas in the 4th quarter, I liked ELCA’s chances. Good luck to WACO the rest of the year. I hope we are both in the dome.

Is East Coweta the best 2-3 team in the state??? Is Newnan the most disappointing team in AAAAAA? Is East Coweta Markell Boston the most underrated player in the Metro Atlanta area??? Will Newnan accept another 7 win season( there average over the past 3 years) in a below average region? Could they beat a Decent AAAAAA team? At least Lowndes coaches are put under pressure to win not just beat your county rival and exit in the second round of the playoffs every year.

@ Todd Holcomb ( Class A Rankings ) …. I give you static all the time about your Class A rankings and I know you can’t cover every class and every team, but can you give me your reasons for the following …. Seminole Co from #7 to #3 after beating Terrell Co? … Landmark dropping from #2 to #4 after winning? … Johnson Co moving up 3 spots from #9 to #6 after a bye week? … Lincoln Co moving from #10 to #9 after beating a winless Warren Co team? ….. just an FYI, Johnson Co & Lincoln shouldn’t be ranked at all …. and when those two teams play a “quality” team, they will lose!… mark it down when Johnson Co plays ECI and Lincoln plays Aquinas. I do appreciate your coverage of high school sports.

SL – The previous week’s rankings were messed up in the original posting. There was some shuffling, but not as much as previously indicated.

Class A
1. (1) Eagle’s Landing Christian (4-0)
2. (3) Aquinas (5-0)
3. (4) Seminole County (5-0)
4. (2) Landmark Christian (6-0)
5. (8) Irwin County (4-0-1)
6. (5) Johnson County (5-0)
7. (7) Prince Avenue Christian (5-1)
8. (9) Marion County (5-0)
9. (10) Lincoln County (3-2)
10. (NR) Emanuel County Institute (4-2)

SL – One more thing.

Rankings aren’t predictions, so what happens when ECI plays JoCo is not the point. Rankings reflect what has happened, not what will happen. For sake of argument, where would you rank Metter if Metter were in Class A? Is Metter better than Lincoln County? Better than Johnson County? ECI lost to Metter. Unless you think Metter is better than those teams, you rank rank ECI higher than them.

Also, sure seems like folks are writing off Lincoln County. Nine-Six is ranked #4 in South Carolina’s Class AA. That’s not a terrible loss for a Class A team.

Very interesting stuff, Todd – in every classification. In 6A, if all 9 teams ranked ahead of Valdosta are better than the Cats (and I’m not saying they aren’t), then 6A State Championship is up for grabs. In 5A, the top four, maybe the top 5, stand out; maybe the survivor of Stephenson-Tucker would have an edge. I would say something nice about Northside, but ENR keeps dissing my Cats so I can’t show him any love. TCC’s only loss has been to Valdosta, but Choice needs some help. In 4A, Sandy Creek seems to be the one to beat. In 3A, I would like see either Cartersville or WACO derail the U. of Buford, but I don’t see that happening. In 2A, I don’t know much about any of those schools, except Brooks, and they are pretty good. That have had to overcome tons of adversity, and Coach Freeman is one of the best in the business. You can’t help but root for those guys. In A, I guess ELCA is the one to beat, but I like Prince Avenue Christian…even before Heron went there. My pastor is from Bogart. Lol!

As for Region 1AAAAAA, last weekend demonstrated, yet again, how unpredictable it is. I think the current ranking reflect three of the playoff spots. The fourth is up for grabs, maybe between Coffee and Lowndes.

Again these rankings make the most sense of the others that will be released this week. The Top 5 in 6A should stay in place until the playoffs. 6-10 will/should continue to adjust and move each week. That Region 1-6A is not for the faint of heart seriously. Every week something is going to happen in the region and all of Georgia better love it. The other solid region is the 6-5A I mean it’s just loaded stockpiled and everything is pretty much coming out of the wash as Tucker, Stephenson, Mays and ML King will be the playoff teams so region title and seeding is what they are also playing for in addition to the ole bragging rights. Yet Lee County over Mays, I can see but don’t think really is but anywho.

@ Todd …… thanks for the reply, I just think weekly rankings should be the best 10 teams in the state that week and what that team has done so far this season …… not what you did last year or the 11 state championships in your “past”. I see your side of it and you make “valid” points, but we could argue all day. Like Lincoln Co and it’s 1 point, failed 2 point conversion win over FPD ( if you want to compare ECI 1 point loss to Metter ). I’ll stick with my “predictions” also …… Class A is still muddled up from #3 – #10 ….. ANYONE that makes teh playoffs on teh Public side could win teh state campionship, just think they are all that close. Again thanks for the replay and I do appreciate the coverage.

@57Cat &HSFB Follower – I would not be terribly surprised by the results in 1-6A on any given week. I can see anyone beating anyone on any given week. Even Brunswick. The Pirates gave Lowndes much more than they expected. I can’t figure out if Brunswick is better than I thought or if Lowndes is worse.

Coffee had 5 starters out for disciplinary reasons against Camden and almost pulled it off. If they had realized they could play with them in the first half I think they would have pulled it off.

By the way Camden. Watch out for Tift. They have been schooled in the fine art of fouling and getting away with it. They watch the officials when they foul to make sure they aren’t seen and then pick up the personal on the retaliation. They play dirty in the pile also.

I can’t argue with the standings. Coffee would be at 5 or 6 except for 3-4 plays. Of course there were those 3-4 plays. I love 1-AAAAAA football!

”I just think weekly rankings should be the best 10 teams in the state that week and what that team has done so far this season”

But the rankings are based on ”what that team has done so far this season.” ECI lost to Metter. Lincoln County doesn’t have a loss like that. Sounds like you’re assuming that Lincoln County is ranked higher based on 11 state titles. They’re not. It’s about ECI losing a game that a Top 10 team should not lose. Lincoln County has not lost a game that a Top 10 team should not lose.

I can only speak for myself and not the rest of Raider Nation, but Mays doesn’t need to be ranked at all and I thank Todd for not doing so. They apparently don’t take being ranked very well. @5AReg6Fan,

are this years ranking based on last year or the history? No. That’s why its kinda opinionated. Tucker did beat us last year but it was no easy game. North had the lead in the 3rd at one point. North should not be #1 I agree. Tucker shouldn’t either. Stephenson is the top dog in that region this year. North has beaten 2 top 10 teams already. Stephenson has more talent and size.
