AAAAAA blog: Collins Hill, Etowah prove worthy … McEachern, Colquitt, Camden survive scares

Etowah and Collins Hill, the only unbeaten but unranked teams in Class AAAAAA, made stirring cases for themselves Friday, each beating undefeated Top 10 teams.

Collins Hill defeated No. 5 Peachtree Ridge 35-28, and Etowah defeated No. 9 Milton 24-15.

Collins Hill (5-0, 3-0) and No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett (5-0, 3-0) are now the only unbeaten teams in Region 7. But Collins first must face defending state champion Norcross (4-2, 3-1) next week.

Etowah (6-0, 3-0) emerged as the only unbeaten in Region 5 play as Lassiter (3-3, 2-1) upset Walton (3-3, 2-1) 28-21. Lassiter or Walton has won its region every season since 2007 except for 2010 – when Etowah won it.

Other noteworthy insights from Friday:

- It’s not easy being good. No. 2 McEachern trailed Campbell 28-14 before winning 49-35. No. 3 Colquitt County was down 14-10 in the fourth quarter before beating Tift County 17-14. No. 6 Camden County beat Coffee 28-21 on a touchdown with 17 seconds left.

- Dacula is in good shape in Region 8. The Falcons, 1-9 last season after making the state quarterfinals in 2011, beat Brookwood for the fourth time in five seasons, 21-7. Dacula is 3-1 in the region play under new coach Tommy Jones, a Brookwood graduate, with top contenders Grayson (win) and Archer (loss) in the mirror.

- Four Region 2 teams entered Friday without a league loss. Now there are two. Newton (2-3, 1-1) beat Alcovy (4-2, 1-1) 17-14, and third-ranked Lovejoy (5-1, 2-0) beat Rockdale County (4-2, 1-1) 23-3. Newton plays at Lovejoy on Oct. 25.

Well I guess a win is a win, but McEachern did not look particularly sharp tonight. Too many mistakes and penalties. Hats off to Campbell, though, for one heck of an effort. They had a great game plan, played hard, and showed a lot of discipline.

WOW!!! Packer game had my blood boiling. That is the sloppiest we have looked all year IMO. Im just glad we pulled out the win. Tift definitely looks better than they have the last couple of years though. I thought I was going to get to see a fight between Propst and one of the Tift coaches. It got pretty intense there for a little while.

South Cobb was able to control the game and milk the clock for a halftime lead of 10-0. Their game plan fell apart in the second half as North Cobb scored 35 points in the third quarter and won 42-13. It was a spirited contest with it literally being a game of two different halves.

@westcobb I agree, Campbell showed up to play and I have no clue if our defense ever showed up tonight? Maybe they were still in the varsity locker room at Mceachern. The only reason we beat them with all the laundry handed out is because we were the better team tonight and offense did their jobs. However this won’t fly in the playoffs one bit. Every team in the playoffs will be there because they earned the right to be there and if we don’t nip this in the butt now, not only are we looking at a loss in region play, we will be 1 and done come playoff time. I hope the coaches call practice Monday and run them boys ragged for those penalties.

@ Todd Holcomb == Thank you so much for this forum. I appreciate having this space to talk sports. As you have noticed, I am the lightning rod. I don’t mind but it would not be possible without you guy’s at the AJC. Keep the interesting subjects coming. On your blog, my horizons are broadened because of all the different opinions. We never stop learning.

Coffee looked every bit as good as Camden tonight. Either Region 1 is really down this year or really stellar. The play-offs will tell that tale. I lean toward the latter.

Camden and Colquitt are looking pretty solid for the # 1 & 2 seed .But it should be at catfight for #’s 3 & 4. I’ll be rooting for Lowndes and Tift next week. Every little bit will help Coffee.

I hope the Tojans are fortunate enough to catch Colquitt on a sloppy night.

Last year Coach Robby said it would take two years for Coffee to become a power in region 1. It is seeming more and more prophetic. Their were several occasions tonight when Coffee didn’t have a senior on the field and it becoming less and less rare to see five freshmen on the field.

Let’s play some football!

Tifton has definetly improved. They showed up with the mindset to win. However, they started playing dirty, injuring 3 of our players on personal foul hits. That is uncalled for in high school football. These kids have their whole lives a head of them and now one was injured so bad he was removed from the field. Our Mighty Packers played sloppy and that just hurt ourselves…we had several opportunities that we should have converted into points but we couldn’t get it together. Tifton has the potential to become a top team they just need to leave the dirty thug like playing at home. There is no room for that here. Make a name for yourself but make it positive. Go Pack!! Let the Rumble for the region continue…..

Coffeec100, I pray that the young man carried off on the stretcher has a full recovery. It was a good game last night against two very young teams. Camden had several huge miscues that should have put the game out of reach. Penalties kept the game close to the end. Really impressed with Coffee and their ability to keep fighting and hanging in there and making Camden play their dog fight game. Coffees inability to establish the run kept them from getting into a very effective passing attack. #2 on defense was a beast, he kept Camden’s speed backs in check. The QB for Coffee has a bright future with #88. Things look good at Coffee. I don’t think that region 1 is down, the teams are younger and not as senior laden as the past. When he had time to throw he was very effective. Jardine stadium is nice and the fans were very hospitable.

Rush was just standing up for his kids!…Three cheapshot personal fouls….Two on our kickers and the one on Lewis was after the play was over….Pretty sure he was pointing to the special teams coach for Tift not Coach Reid….Tift Co. is much better but need to play with a little more class!!! Score was close but when you look at the time of possession and yardage by the Pack it was not…Good Region 1 game!

Must be the west Cobb football flu this week. If Hillgrove played last night like they did against Walton and Marietta, they should have scored at least another 30 points against Pebblebrook. Hillgrove scored under thier season average of 39, but got their win. On to North Cobb….

I did not see the game but it sounds like Tift was knocking fire from Colquitt. Was it a dirty game or just Tift playing like they wanted it? I wish I could have seen it.

I have noticed that fans of certain teams complain of dirty play and it turns out to be just a more aggressive and hungrier team. They play until the whistle blows and have a violent intent while doing their job Not meaning to injure but to make the opposition not want to do his job.

It’s called football..

Don’t mind me. I am just a faceless voice. It is true though. They get hit like they never have and now it is dirty. Like I said, I did not see it but it sounds like Tift was doing major work on the defensive side of the ball and was very aggressive on special teams.

@Sportsnut….being hungry and aggressive is great in football after all you play the game to win. And gaining one personal foul because the momentum was there and couldn’t stop I understand … But 3 with late hits is called DIRTY and then repeating it opponent after opponent. Well you get the picture…

@Sportsnut – being hungry and aggressive in football is part of the game after all the goal is to win and that is acceptable. Getting one personal foul because the momentum is there and it’s hard to stop on a dime I understand completely but 3 personal fouls and late hits is DIRTY and when you repeat those actions opponent after opponent … Well you get the picture….

wowJUSTwow = Two things u that I know to be true this year, we beat lovejoy again this year and Tifton wont make the playoffs again this year. Camden will win by at least 2 TDs or more because our RB King rushed for over 150 yds and Camden has 2 or 3 or 4or 5 fast backs. and Tifton has no offense or defense. Wait maybe it was our defense that made them look like they didn’t have a offense but they are overated.

@ Sports nut =Don’t buy what Tift is selling, they may win one more game this yr. I could break down the game for u but I am not BK and the football guy that u are I know u will understand what I mean when I say we left at least 21 to 28 points on the field and we had over 400 yds of offense to their 170 and I don’t know the time of possession but Tift only had 2 first downs the entire second half so u can pretty much understand how long we had the ball. And to clear something up they hit us with some costly cheap shots on special teams but our defense more than made up for it the legal way and their QB will have nightmares for a while. One time we didn’t think he would get up.

Tift County is obviously leaps and bounds better than the hot garbage they have been the past few years, but the reason they hung around in Fridays game was because of Colquitts sloppy offensive play. @wowjustwow….normally ppl.would make excuses when their team lose,,,not when their team win…so I dont understand why you’re saying the colquitt fans are making excuses….expressing the truth isnt making excuses….in the game of fb being aggressive is the norm & widely accepted,,,but being overly aggressive to the point where you’re hurting players intentionally doesnt sit in good with our fans & players.so obviously its the reason for the topic of discussion. pack has an aggressive defense as well,,,but our players dont intentionally go out & try 2 hurt other players,,esp after the play is whistled dead,,or late hits out of bounds etc. etc. pack defense was smashing tift qb.,,,,had him running 4 his life,,,,but we did it in a ( within the guideline) fashion of good aggressive defense.always remember ,,,when a team is inferior to you,,,they will do anything to win ( classless) simply to have a chance 2 win. our team already is trying to get some ppl. back healthy,,and its senseless when players intentionally try and hurt other players just 2 win a game.say what you want about probst,,our players and our fans,,,,,it dosnt really matter 2 us. wining fb games is what matter 2 us,,,,,all that other garbage you bloggers are spitting out ur mouth about pack,,,,put it in the trash can along with yourself,,,our fans stand behind our coach and players rightfully,,,, we’re glad 2 know that you got the pack in ur scope…thats respect….so thank you 4 that,,,everything else you can keep….. as far as tift giving us a scare..lol PLAESE!!!! total yards pack 362 tift 158.. tift had only 23yds in the 2nd half…TIFT was lucky 2 get outta there without being beat by 30pts.or better. sos say what you want, speculate what you want,,,,we treat it like dust and brush it off our shoulder,,,,on 2 the next opponent

For those of you whiny Porkers in Motown, get over yourself! To say that Tift played dirty is just not true! You just can’t believe how Tift punched your guys in the mouth and didnt back down ALL NIGHT!
I have had the opportunity to watch the film, and they only thing that was wrong was some of the bogus calls by the refs. Tift had 2 sideline warnings, 1 on a CC 3rd and 10 (conveniently) while Propst and his cronies stayed 5 yds on the field all night ( its on the film). Or how about a BS “pass interference” call against Tift after they stopped CC on the 25 with a 4th and 7. That flag came flying in as the players were turning around to go back to their huddles! As far as the coaches yelling at each other, it was one thing. Coach John Reid and his staff aren’t gonna stand by and let Propst and his Overinflated ego run over clas 1AAAAAA any more. Get ready for it Porkers, Propst and all his “baggage” will be gone in 2 yrs, mark my words! Their just just aren’t enough cameras and mirrors in Moultrie to make him happy.
