AA blog: What we learned Friday

Here’s what we learned Friday in Class AA:

  • Which school has a more impressive run, Lovett or Washington-Wilkes?

The No. 5-ranked Washington-Wilkes Tigers have officially put themselves in the state title discussion, knocking off their Region 8-AA nemesis, the No. 4 Jefferson Dragons, with a 21-14 victory in front of the home crowd. The Dragons (3-2, 1-1 in 8-AA) served as a roadblock for the Tigers (6-0, 3-0) last season, as the Tigers marched to a 5-0 start with convincing wins before falling to the eventual state-champion Dragons, 36-0. But this year is clearly a new year, and the Tigers are now well positioned to win their first region title since 2006. Perhaps the only team that now stands in the Tigers’ way are the Rabun County Wildcats, who improved to 5-0 with a 63-7 win over Riverside Military. The Tigers and Wildcats meet Oct. 18 in Washington – the week after the Wildcats visit the Dragons.
  • The No. 2-ranked Lovett Lions finally fell to an opponent from a larger classification, but it took overtime for Washington County – ranked No. 3 in Class AAA – to beat the Lions, 36-33.  The defeat ended an incredible run for the Lions, who opened the season with five consecutive opponents from larger classifications and a resume that includes wins over Marist and St. Pius X. The Lions will turn to a well-deserved bye before settling into their Region 6-AA schedule. They’ll travel to Hapeville Charter Oct. 18.
  • Lamar County’s No. 1 ranking is safe after a 40-19 win over Northeast Macon. Lamar County is now 5-0, handing Northeast (4-1) its first loss of the season; No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian is now 5-0, beating Thomson 50-12; No. 6 Calhoun was off this week and travels to Pepperell as it seeks to improve to 3-0 in 7-AA; No. 7 Benedictine made easy work of Bryan County in a battle of undefeated teams, winning 39-6 to improve to 6-0; No. 8 Brooks County (5-1) edged Thomasville, 30-23; No. 9 Macon County (4-1) edged Putnam County, 20-23; No. 10 Fitzgerald (3-1) beat Cook, 28-13. So the top 10 will shuffle, with Jefferson possibly falling out of the top 10 and other teams – i.e. Rabun County, Bowdon – knocking on the door.

Lovett loins are a really good team and well coach team but I will put my money on those Lamar Trojans once we cut out the simple mistakes and sure up that defense a little more I think we could be a really good team that can do some special things when play off comes if everyone can stay healthy but the ww and BC or teams to keep in mind also.

Just because Jefferson lost doesn’t mean 8-AA is weak buddy. Jefferson is darn good, WW returned a bunch of starters and is a little better and it’s looking like Rabun is a legit top 10 as well. But we also match up with another tough region in the 1st round, 6-AA. These two may be the best regions in the state.
