Mary Persons hasn’t allowed a point in first half

By David Purdum / For the AJC

Mary Persons has not allowed a single point in the first half this season. Opponents have managed just two touchdowns, both coming in the fourth quarter of blowouts. The 5-0 Bulldogs are allowing 3.6 points per game and have two shutout victories.

“We’re having a decent season, record-wise,” Mary Persons coach Brian Nelson said. “We need to continue to get better.”

Decent?

The sixth-ranked Bulldogs will look to impress their coach more Friday, when they host a solid Westside team that put up 40 points against them last season. The Seminoles (3-2) are averaging 390 yards and 27 points per game this year and hung with AAAAA power Northside-WR.

Westside beat Mary Persons, 40-21, last season.

Back-to-back against the best: No team is facing a tougher two-week stretch than the Troup Tigers from Region 5-AAAA. The Tigers play at No. 1 Sandy Creek on Friday. Sandy Creek has won 35 consecutive region games. Troup returns home next week to host No. 2 Carrollton.

Toughest division: Three of the four teams in Region 3-AAAA Division A–No. 6 Wayne County (5-0), No. 7 Statesboro (5-0) and Liberty County (5-0)—are unbeaten, heading into Friday’s games. Wayne County hosts Burke County. Statesboro hosts Swainsboro, and Liberty County is at Glenn Hills. Division play begins next week. The top three teams in Division A and Division B will reach the region play-in games, with the winners advancing to the state playoffs.

Coach out: No. 3 Griffin will be without coach Steve Devoursney on Saturday against Riverdale. Devoursney is serving a suspension for being ejected by officials from last week’s big win over Stockbridge. Any coach or player who is ejected from a game must sit out the following game, according to GHSA rules.

Hot start: The 4-0 Washington Bulldogs open Region 6-AAAA play versus South Atlanta on Friday at Lakewood Stadium. The Bulldogs haven’t gotten off to a 5-0 start since 1998.

Top offense: No. 4 Monroe Area leads AAAA in scoring at 49.2 points per game. The Purple Hurricanes travel to Stephens County on Friday. Monroe Area has lost 10 of 11 games to Stephens County, with its only win during that stretch coming last season, 21-17.

Mary Person’s five opponents so far collectively are 8-16, with only one team having a winning record. Maybe they need to play a few quality teams before we get too excited about their defense.

I thought Wayne County v. Burke was Friday night — is it tonight (Thursday)?

Carrollton rolled to another easy win tonight. Fayette County is not very good.
Hopefully we stay healthy for the 1 November showdown with SC. Doesn’t look like the rest of the region has much to offer this year.
