Can Cartersville threaten Buford?

Cartersville has quietly been rocking along this season. Will coach Frank Barden’s team be in position to challenge Buford by the end of the season?

The No. 2-ranked Purple Hurricanes have been scoring points by the bushel. Last week’s 41-3 win over Coahulla Creek make it four straight games with at least 41 points.

Cartersville (5-0) is the king of Region 5-AAA thanks to an offense led by quarterback Brooks Barden, who has thrown for 1,075 yards and 16 touchdowns. Barden completed 13 of 24 passes last week. His numbers could be astronomical, but there’s little need to inflict additional pain on an outmanned team.

Barden’s two favorite receivers are senior T.L. Ford (295 yards) and freshman Trase Fezzia (214 yards). For had two catches for 55 yards and one touchdown last week, while Fezzia had three catches for 49 yards and two touchdown.

The Canes can run the ball, too. Junior Kalin Heath rushed for 59 yards and caught four passes for 39 yards against The Creek.

Cartersville’s defense isn’t bad, either. The Canes have blanked two opponent and only once allowed a team to score in double digits.

The Canes are trying to play it “one game at a time,” but would love to get another shot at No. 1-ranked Buford. They met in the state semifinals last year, with Buford winning 21-10 to give Cartersville its first loss.

Ringgold surges toward consideration

The next ranked team that stumbles could have Ringgold ready to take their place.

The Tigers are wrongfully overlooked in Region 5 because of Cartersville, but they took a big step toward securing one of the league’s top two playoff spots – and a first-round home playoff game – by putting a 38-20 whipping on Adairsville last week.

Ringgold (4-1) averaged 11 plays on their first four drives against Adairsville and scored three touchdowns. It helps to have experienced senior quarterback Slade Dale calling the plays and running back Kyle Shell was outstanding in the win, running 16 times for 86 yards and catching five passes for 91 yards.

Ringgold had three straight road games, but appears to be zeroing in on the regular-season finale at Cartersville.

West Hall makes its move

Don’t look now, but the West Hall Spartans are making a play for the playoffs. The program hasn’t had a .500 season since 2008 and hasn’t made the playoffs since going 9-2 in 2002 in coach Tim Marchman’s final season.

Second-year coach Tony Lotti has the Spartans on the right road. They’re 4-1, but don’t have a bad team on the schedule the rest of the year. After this week’s game against Buford (doh!) West Hall plays East Hall, North Hall, White County and Dawson County. They probably need to win two of three against East, White and Dawson to reach the playoffs.

West Hall has an excellent quarterback in Zach English. In last week’s 49-7 win over Fannin County, English completed 7 of 8 passes for 99 yards and three touchdowns.

@ main man- Wow, Really Really. Oh yes it can be done. No team not even Cville is unbeatable. Buford may not have to worry about Cville just yet because region 7AAA is gonna be a challenge for them. I pick N Hall to challenge you guys and yes we can beat Buford, but we will have to take care if the ball. We are much better this year all around dude so don’t get it twisted we are better and our region is better than what credit is given. Can’t’ wait!!!! CANESNATIION!!!!

@ Big Fan. Yes it’s early and time will tell. Can not fault good teams like Cville and even Buford for having weak teams in the region. You just have to beat who you are supposed to beat I guess and continue to get better. GO CANES!!!!

main man where are you at, is that it no come back why do you feel that there is no way in hell that we can not beat Buford any team can be beat any given Friday IT JUST HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME. So you better stop counting Cartersville out. We are a better team from last year and we can not wait for the rematch with Buford to be the best you have to beat the best and I thank this is the year we beat the best (BUFORD). See there is no HATE on Buford I know they are a good football team you do not win 8 state championship by mistake. But Cartersville was the best team they face all year last year and they was in a fight and they know it and now this year we are loaded with player even better than last year and we do have the OFF PLAYER OF THE YEAR AT QB BROOKS BARDEN SR WITH GUYS BACK THIS YEAR THAT GAVE BUFORD FITS LIKE KALIN HEATH JR TL FORD SR TYMON PENNIMAN SO AND GORDAN GRAY SR AND TRASE FEZZIA FR AND A HOST OF MORE.

I would say based on the results of the games last year that Cartersville may have been the 3rd or 4th best team Buford played in 2012.
I would propose:
Gainesville
SPX
North Hall
Cartersville
In that order.

Just remember this year’s Buford team is practically the same team that beat Cartersville last year (just a year more experienced, bigger, and stronger). Anyone is beatable, but unless Buford beats themselves with mistakes, turnovers, and penalties, I don’t think they’ll lose this year. I would like to play Cartersville in the Dome this year. That was a great HS football game last year.

Thomson RB was injured.. He played but he wasn’t a 100% from the game against WACO on…. If @Cville think Jefferson CO will beat WACO ,he is a sad football fan because he don’t know the history between us and them to say they will beat us.. Your region is full of no name teams so what are you saying…

CCF – Buford goes out of region to play ANYONE that’ll play them. Even traveling to Texas & Ohio.. If you want a rematch ask your AD at your touchdown club meeting about arranging a game..

Since 2006 Buford has won state every season, sans OT vs the Yellow Jackets of Calhoun, after their 4th try..

Bach to Cartersville – ask your AD about a game.. Home & home… Gainesville is the only team in the state that has the gnads to do so…

First off id like to say that i am unbiased towards either school, and am solely writing this for the purpose of explanation. For the ones saying that Cartersville’s QB is the deciding factor… Clearly you did not see the scores from the Buford vs Gainesville game. Deshaun Watson is ranked #1 in class 5A and is commited to Clemson… Clemson coaches were at that game watching, and im here to tell you Buford’s Defense made him look like a fool. Carterville may be better than last year, but Buford is even more powerful this year than they were last year. On the offensive side, the Wolves did not lose any crucial receivers nor QBs. On defense, Buford is even bigger than last year. Last week they held Banks County to negative (-) 27 yards. In my opinion, Cartersville, just like last year, doesnt stand a chance. Buford had the weakest/youngest team in several years last year… This year they are older, they are bigger, and they are (as always) determined to be #1.

Please everybody know the real deal! GHSA will never touch Buford! They are scared of them! They been caught but given a slap on the wrist! Just like other schools, how does the enrollment stay the same! If everyone wanted to go there, then they should be AAAAAA. I remember when they were A team! It’s the Buford way!

Son – Buford beat defending AAAAA state champion Gainesville 38-14 in Gainesville..

Gainesville is the ONLY team that’ll step up & play the Wolves on a consistent basis.. The past 5 years Buford has played the Red Elephants, winning 4 out of 5..

5 & 6 years ago Buford was invited to play at Cowboys Stadium to play in a “classic” there (kinda like our Corky Classic) & they played in the Kirk Herbstreet Invitation in Ohio… Won both in routes..

Hey – Ask YOUR AD to schedule Buford….

So one superstar player and a State Title now is all you need to be a power program huh??? “ALSO BUFORD FANS” If a top program respected your program they would schedule you… FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!!!

I know many from the other winning programs in Gwinnett Co. They do not play Buford (aside from GFL & preseason scrimmages) as they have nothing to gain. If they win, they should have won.. If they lose, that’s a black-eye..

Imposter, Buford DID turn themselves in last season for playing a player 2 plays in 61-0 & 63-0 routs. They went from a #1 seed to # 3 seed in the playoffs & 9-1 record to 7-3.

Still won State..

Son of a (let’s not go there!!) – It’s evident you know nothing about the state’s top program… your comment “So one superstar player and a State Title now is all you need to be a power program huh???”

I take it you did not watch the UGA-LSU game…. The LT for LSU has been a starter since last season as a FR, Vadal Alexander. The Dawgs have 2 starters on their O line, Dallas Lee & Kolton Houston. There are many others on the sidelines chomping at the bit for PT (that’s “playing time” since you only know about “yourself”) Josh Cardello, Reid Ferguson..

How many HS teams in Ga can say they have 3 starters (atleast 2 All-SEC) OL playing in the same game of Top 10 teams??? Definitely NOT yours!!

Don’t STFU, you are comical on here with foot in mouth ignorance!!

That is all ~ punked again! ~

Look it up on AJC they wrote on how weak UGA O Line is after the Clemson game… To me a top program is always ranked in the top ten every preseason.. I didn’t start noticing Gainesville their until the Qb made a statement in the playoffs his Fr yr….
