Poll Talk: Milton ranked for first time since 1980

Milton is 5-0 for the first time in 14 years, but being ranked is even rarer. The Eagles are No. 9 in this week’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class AAAAAA rankings, Milton’s first appearance in a state poll since 1980.

Milton opened the season with a 31-24 overtime victory over Alpharetta, now the first-place team in Region 6, and has won the rest of its games by at least four touchdowns.

The latest was a 38-9 victory over Wheeler despite the absence of start running back Treyvon Paulk, who is injured. Micco Brisker rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown in his place.

Milton ironically graduated its best senior class in history when four players signed with ACC or SEC schools. One of those was Carl Lawson, who went to Auburn as the No. 1-rated defense end in the country.

This year’s Milton team has three blue-chip prospects in Paulk, who is committed to Tennessee, and juniors Nick Wilson, a lineman, and Quarte Sapp, a linebacker.

Milton plays another 5-0 team on Friday when unranked Etowah visits.

Room for Milton in the Top 10 was made when Valdosta and Coffee from Region 1 were beaten. Defending state champion Norcross re-entered the rankings.

Other teams entering the rankings are South Paulding for Allatoona in AAAAA, Pierce County for Woodward Academy in AAA and Marion County for George Walton Academy in A. South Paulding is ranked for the first time in history.

Milton should’ve lost to alpharetta. Alpharetta did not play a good game and gave the ball away 1 too many times. Milton plate 3 other out of region games against substantially poor opponents. Roswell, cenntenial, and johns creek are all struggling programs. I’m extremely surprised to see them in the top ten considering they have faced one good team in alpharetta, which they should’ve lost to

Finally Milton is getting noticed. After they beat another undeafted team this week vs Etowah and go into the bye week 6-0 they will be noticed even more. Keep an eye on them they are on the rise.

I am not sure how good the other teams in AAAA are but I can tell you the Griffin Bears are pretty darn good. They demolished a decent Stockbridge team and the score does not indicate how bad it was. The Parks kid playing QB needs to get a call from every recruiter around including Paul Johnson. He is the kind of player that can carry a team on his own.

”how could valdosta & coffee drop out of the top 10 with 1 loss & be replaced by norcross with 2 losses? SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!!!”

If it were based on W-L record, then Coffee and Valdosta still wouldn’t be ranked. There are eight undefeated teams, and then Coffee and Valdosta have lost to other 1-loss teams, so they’d probably not get the nod.

As for Norcross, they’ve lost to two teams that are ranked No. 1 in their states and top-10 nationally. If not for margin-of-victory considerations, Norcross would be ranked #2. Coffee, having lost to Tift, really has no argument. Valdosta is one of about 12 teams that probably could be ranked anywhere from 6 to 12. Outside of the top three, it’s a mad scramble.

Can’t base it on ‘’should have lost.” Bottom line is, Milton won. Then Alpharetta, the likely Region 6 champion, loses by 1 point to Lovejoy. So in Milton’s one opportunity to play a decent team, Milton performed about as well as No. 3 Lovejoy against the same opponent. IMO, you have to give credit to what happened, not what should’ve happened.

Also Alpharetta lost by 1 to Lovejoy with there backup Quarterback so Milton’s win is even more impressive by beating them while have Austin King there #1 QB and Milton was up by 17 points at one point.

Nice to see football finally doing something at Milton. The 2012 Milton basketball team was one of the best in state history. Don’t want to hear about move-ins; they had to go thru Norcross, Wheeler, North Gwinnett, Walton, Berkmar, et al , all with significant move-ins.

Congrats to Milton on entering the top 10. Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t Norcross QB transfer from Milton and if so my I wonder did he make the right choice because Milton hasn’t missed a beat at all. Don’t get me wrong Norcross is loaded with good players but Milton does too I guess

Now that Norcross has the train back on the tracks, their game against P Ridge might be a barn burner.

Since Lovejoy has trouble putting away games against weaker opponents, you have to wonder whether their game this Friday against Mighty Rockdale, might just turn out to be their Waterloo?

Hey, can’t you rednecks, plowboys and woodchoopers figure out how to operate a camera so the folks in the civilized part of the state can see some of those games. It is not exactly worth sending a professional film crew down to the “deliverance” part of the state. But if y’all can teach Cletus and Billy Bob to operate a camera it would at least be worth hitting the power button on the remote to watch both Lowndes and Valdosta lose, without having to wait for the first round of the playoffs.

Have I insulted everyone yet? Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time.

Go Rockdale!

Milton has a very solid football team. 3 good RB’s, good o-line, solid defense. Other than Alpharetta everyone they have played are bad football teams. Alpharetta actually dominated them in the 2nd half and if not for a questionable clipping call at the 5 yard line would have beaten Milton. Because they play in the weakest region in the state they have a chance to run the table or at worst finish 9-1. Their biggest challenge will not come until they play the first round of the playoffs. Not sure if they will match up favorably with bigger Gwinnett schools.

Now that we are into the region schedules, there will be little evidence to resolve relative strength between regions. In previous years that has led to all sorts of blather about North v South Georgia, despite the overwhelming historical evidence that the State Championship will be won by a team from South Georgia or Gwinnett County. With Camden now in Region 1, it is pretty much Region 1 or Gwinnett.

I thought I would just get an early start on the nonsense part even though there is exciting football played in both places and around the state. Honestly I think the only teams other than Region 1 or Gwinnett with a chance to win state are: Lovejoy, McEachern, Hillgrove, and just maybe a super long shot by Langston Hughes.

Cobb hasn’t won a State Championship since 1967, so McEachern and Hillgrove are swimming upstream.

I am sorry to say it Sportsnut, but I do not think Lovejoy is as strong this year. In addition, the strategy and style of play will not be a surprise to anyone this year. If Lovejoy and North both win their regions, then they will meet in the quarter finals. Teams tend not to fair all that well the second time they play North. Ask Camden, Grayson, or any number of teams. It will take a different strategery than Preston Williams and an aggressive D Line to win the game.

I would have to say that Camden and Colquitt have a great shot – and some team from Gwinnett. Who knows which one? Archer? P Ridge? North tends to fold after they smack some other North GA teams around. But maybe this is their year?

It is still fun to push some buttons. I have trouble walking past an anthill without poking it with a stick. I thought I would get an early start watching the ants scurry even though I have tremendous respect for the programs in Region 1, and all football programs trying to learn and build better players and teams. Thank you very much for the links to some very entertaining South GA games.

@ SuwaneeOwns == You are in rare form. Feeling good , are you?
First lets remember that I have been saying this all season. No news there. We replaced 16 starters and we feel good with what we have because it is the future. They have done enough so far. They just came up short against Colquitt but played well.

From what I have seen, there is no dominant team this year. North Gwinnett is by far looking like the best but it is yet to be seen if they can take the next step. If I remember correctly, they did not like a fierce pass rush. That is what they would get if we met again.

Preston Williams is a star. No one, I repeat, no one has been able to stop him. That is 6′5, 202 with 4.4 speed. And just a junior. As long as he is on the field, he is a threat to take it to the house.

I would welcome a rematch and I am sure the kids would too. I know North would !

@ Suwanee Owns == What style is that anyway? They just play football. If that is surprise to anyone, they don’t know football. No one should be surprised at the way they play. The things is you guy’s, formerly 5A, paid no or little attention to us in 4A. In 2010, 11′ and 12′, Lovejoy had the best regular season D in the state. They were either #1 or #2 in 10′. In 11′, they were #1. In 12′, they were #1 or #2. Not just in class. The State leaders.

So don’t fool yourself. One thing you can count on is that if there is a game to be played, Lovejoy is coming to play some football. They will play until the whistle blows, which had some thinking played dirty. They will play until the horn sounds. It is second nature. Our team is learning. We had 21 signee’s last season. We not only lost starters, we lost some back-ups as well. Right now, our kids are showing that they can play. We are not winning the same way but we are winning.

Still don’t like Peachtree Ridge getting the nod over Camden Co. but it will be ok, it all plays out. The 7,8,9 and 10 spots will continue to change this season. The Top 6 I think will be pretty much set until the playoffs barring something drastic in nature, esp in 1-6A or 7-6A. Let’s also not discount Lovejoy, let’s remember were talking about a team that lost what 35 players and 21 are on college rosters meaning this years team is still rather “new” plus they’ve been w/o Gates at LB. With the Region slate in front of them they really can gel between now and the playoffs. The close games at Colquitt, Alpharetta and home against E Coweta are evidence that Lovejoy will continue to get better. Not too many corners (including Nick Glass at Peachtree Ridge-who Lovejoy hung 330 yards on in the 1st half of a varsity on varsity scrimmage) in the state can hold Preston Williams. I think the Cobb history thing is real but needs to dialed back a little bit. McEachern is a serious team this year and they will be quarterfinal bound at least. Archer will make the noise in 8-6A but the champ isn’t coming out of that side of Gwinnett. North Gwinnett is still the team to beat and they have Mill Creek and Peachtree Ridge left so they are no “shoe-in”.

Norcross is learning to win in spite of AJ Bush. They were expecting an upgrade at the QB position with Bush, but it has been a severe downgrade. It is taking the coaches some time to work with his limitations and the defense is saving him. He doesn’t know how to check down, panics easily and can always be counted on for a couple of turnovers.

”Lovett should be #1, the AA poll is jacked up bad.”

Hard to argue with that. Lovett certainly has the most quality wins, by far. But Lamar County started ahead of Lovett for good reason. Lamar beat Lovett last season and returned its three best players, all committed to Georgia Tech. Lamar has won all of its games handily, including a 28-7 decision against otherwise unbeaten Eagle’s Landing of Class AAAA. Hard to demote a team that has fully met expectations to this point.

I also don’t believe Norcross has beaten enough quality teams to overcome 2 losses, especially a 55-0 whitewashing, I don’t care if it was by an out-of-state team. @Sportsnut and HSFB which scrimmage did you guys attend?? The one I was at was 27-21 Lovejoy(including a last second fg) with the second team defense for PTR playing every other series. We treated it as a scrimmage and got a lot of kids snaps. Most people I talked to felt like we would have dominated Lovejoy 1’s v/s 1’s in a full game and I have to agree. Lovejoy is a good team and has great coaching, but seriously it was a scrimmage and your facts are way off. Maybe you guys didn’t realize that it was Varsity for the first (2) qtrs. JV in the 3rd and Freshmen in the 4th. Hopefully we can see each other in the playoffs and settle it for real.

You must be remembering last years scrimmage. I talked to some of your freshmen that were sitting in the stands before they went to get dressed. I know what I saw. The game that Myron Burton scored on the first play from scrimmage. Then he scored again on a middle screen. The game where our DE’s ate up the 6′8, 340 tackle !The same game where you had to bring in the back-up Qb because that D was all over the starter. He was on the sidelines with his shoulder hanging.

Don’t even try that about it was not 1’s on 1’s. It was for a full 3 quarters. Then our kids took it to yours by the count of 14-0 in the 4th. We know what we saw.

We scored a total of 57 points and your team had 21 and you feel that somehow you could have dominated us? Your logic seems a bit out of wack. This was 2 weeks before the season. At this point, you are finalizing your game plans and all things should be in place. True it is a time to go over things but you are doing what you want to do during the season. It is not the time to be experimenting with the kids and they did not do that. They came with what they had.

57 – Ranking Valdosta is definitely a position that can be defended. But I don’t think Valdosta necessarily has better wins than Norcross. Mill Creek and Parkview are probably as good as Thomas Central and Brooks County. (I realize Parkview is 0-5, but they’ve played five Class AAAAAA playoff teams, three that are in the Top 10.) – If you look at both team’s results, it’s pretty similar, so then it comes down to which team that I feel is better. Norcross has two-thirds of its starters back from a state c’ship team. One other thing – If Norcross had played Valdosta’s schedule, Norcross might be 5-0. If Valdosta played Norcross’ schedule, I can’t foresee that Valdosta would be better than 3-2.
