Tift puts new wrinkle in Region 1 … Archer, Alpharetta take control … Norcross, Brookwood: ‘I’m not dead yet’

Many consider 1-AAAAAA the state’s toughest region. It was the most entertaining Friday night.

Third-ranked Colquitt County (4-1, 1-0) overwhelmed Lowndes 37-7. Lowndes (3-2, 0-1) has missed the playoffs only once since 1994, but things are looking desperate after the Vikings’ worst home loss in 15 years.

In other region openers, Camden County beat Valdosta 14-10 in a game between state-ranked while unranked Tift County won its first region game since 2010 with a 32-29 thriller over 10th-ranked Coffee.

In other AAAAAA happenings:

- Alpharetta (3-2, 2-0) is alone at the top in Region 6. The Raiders beat previously unbeaten South Forsyth 38-16. Centennial and North Forsyth also lost, leaving Alpharetta as the only unbeaten team in region play.

- Archer (5-0, 3-0) is alone at the top in Region 8. The Tigers beat Dacula 31-14 in a game between the only teams that hadn’t lost a game in region play.

- Brookwood (1-3, 1-1) won’t go winless. The Broncos beat Parkview 10-0 in a game between winless arch-rivals in Region 8. Brookwood’s three losses are teams that have visited the Top 10 this season.

- Norcross (3-2, 2-1) isn’t going away. The defending state champions’ two losses are to teams with top-10 national rankings, including Georgia No. 1 North Gwinnett. Norcross beat 2012 quarterfinalist Mill Creek 27-13 on Friday. Norcross is 8-0 all-time against the Hawks.

Bk smith 14, where are you? Boy were you wrong. Now admit it, you were impressed by the Packers tonight! We took the Vikings behind the woodshed and did a little chopping! Your silence exemplifies your lack of respect and class. The way you talked, you should have been the first to admit you we’re wrong and acknowledge the great game played by the Pack! It’s time for the truth to come out. BK is actually a Packer plant, a double-agent trained in a connivingly successful plot by rogue CCHS science teachers to think, act, and live as a Viking. His sole purpose is actually to UNDERMINE the Viking program from within while providing bulletin board fodder to fire up their opponents. All the recent misfortunes that the Viking program has suffered were not just random events! Binocular-gate? The first round playoff loss? The third shot from the grassy knoll? BK Smith!

Camden played tough but the refs were horrible. Not one to complaun about refs but to call sideline infractions for standing in coaching box is childish and when one refs calls the play down by contact you cant run in from the end zone and call it a fumble. He was down but still it was a good game. Now camden take some money off of ticket sales and upgrade your stadium it was horrible.

My VHS Cats played a great game other than all them drop passes by our star receiver, so much for Camden scoring 31 and winning by 14 points are worst. Give my Cats sum respect, them bad calls might of been the difference especially that b.s. fumble call when we were approaching the go ahead score. We know the ground can’t cause an fumble, but if we get a better and consistent passing game we would of won easily. I expect Coffee to take down Camden.

I have an off-topic question for the Colquitt folks – why are you the Packers AND the wood choppers? are these terms related?

Valdosta suffered from the lack of athleticism at the QB position, in Region 1 your QB has to have the ability to make it happen from time to time with his legs and I have not seen that at Valdosta (or Lowndes for that matter) in a long time. The Loudermilk kid is basically a FB who just plows straight ahead without an OL that is big enough for a power run game and the other kids have decent arms, but can not handle any semblance of pressure. These are institutional issues that will continue to haunt and plague these programs for years to come. Your QB has to be at least one of your top 5 athletes and that is just not the case. I am not disparaging anybody’s son or spewing negativity about individuals, but the truth is what is, not what one wants it to be.

Congratulations to Tift on a great game.

Now for the bad news. The last I heard at the Coffee shop after the game last night was Coffee has four players that were injured during last nights game who may be lost for a while. Coffee also had two key defensive players who did not dress out last night due to injuries during practice.

Now for the really bad news. With ten seconds to go in the game and Tift with the ball on second dowm, a Tift player hit a Coffee player hard in the facemask with both hands. Although I think an official saw it and would have probably penalized Tift, he also saw several Coffee players immediately mob the Tift player who committed the foul. Coffee had two players ejected who, of course, will not play next week.

Now for the really, really bad news. On this part I am not sure of all the details. The Coffee coaches were admonishing the Coffee players that were ejected and another melee broke out on the Coffee sideline with no Tift players involved. The Coffee coaches immediately sent as many as four more key players directly to the locker room. I do not know why. I do know Coach Robby does not put up with any jaw jacking or back talk and will most likely sit them out for all or a significant part of the game with Camden next week.

So Camden fans. I knew you would not want to win this way but it looks like you may be facing a Coffee team down twelve starters next week.

I do not know if the ejections will be appealed or not.

The officials definitely let the game get out of control last night but more Tift players than Coffee players kept their composure.

What a big, sad, terrible mess.

@Titletown USA:……Sadly, I have to agree with you here. I believe Valdosta’s defense is as good or better than anyone else in the state, but for whatever reason, coach has failed to solidify an offensive identity for the Cats. It is unfortunate that we have 2 great backs and no offensive line to support them against the stronger teams. That being said, we fall prey to the pass rush as well. We have no choice but to run the ball most of the time bc with no o-line there can be no long term pocket passing. Not every school is made to pass the ball around. We basically only have 2 receivers right now, and one is a freshman….

Until we get an offense that is both explosive and effective, we won’t be winning any state titles anytime soon. As Titletown said….this starts with a QB that can make a few plays with his feet. I like Shuman as a passer. He’s pretty good, and I’m glad we have him for a couple more years…but Loudermilk made a few plays and better decisions last night, and more importantly he moved the ball down the field a little more effectively last night.

A team not getting recognition but is playing good football – Milton HS. 5-0 with a chance to run the table in a weak region. Lost their star RB(UT commit) but plug in two kids that are really good. One is a 5′8 215# hammer and the other is a legit 4.4 speedster. Great special teams and very solid defense. Not sure if they can get past Gwinnett schools in round 1 but they are playing good football.

@ Titletown USA – There is some truth to what you are saying about the QB position, but let me ask you a question? Who has a QB like you are talking about?? Camdens QB couldn’t beat anybody with his legs.

I would like to give Camden alot of credit for a great game. That is how region1 games are supposed to be played.
Valdosta just didn’t utilize all our offensive weapons effectively enough against Camden. Also, our defensive line got mauled for long stretches in the game. There were some “HORRIBLE” calls from the officials, but Valdosta had its chances.

I will say that Camdens version of the “WING-T” is very diffferent than most teams. They have SPEED. SPEED, SPEED at all the key positions. The also run alot of really creative traps and mis-direction stuff.

Valdosta coach need to realize he does not have a QB that can just stand and throw the ball down the field consistantly, and the offensive line is not good enough to allow this to happen as well. That being said we have 2 very good running backs that can take it to the house from anywhere on the field. The coach should be more patient and allow the running game to work. In my opinion Loudermilk is our best option at QB and he should consider using him the majority of the time and stop going back in forth, especially when the game is as tight as it was last night. Coach G has got to learn how to win these type games. He has the players to make it happen if he use them wisely.

@CAMDEN74…..I will say this in the form of humility: RELEASE THE BLUECATS!!! :-D As Dosta Dawg & Titletown USA said, Valdosta is suffering from an o-line that can block. It all starts up front and the quarterback has to be a difference maker in the game. I’m not saying anything about the officiating but it was a great game and Valdosta need to keep their heads up. I didn’t want to see them lose but at least being at Martin Stadium last night, seeing the MIGHTY VIKINGS getting man-handled, makes me feel somewhat better. Lowndes home side looked like they were watching a funeral. It’s said to say, last night was confirmation to a lot of their fans that they are not the great team they thought they were.

Coach G, please take note to how Colquitt stopped Lowndes wing-T. They put 9 men in the box and forced them to throw. We should consider using that type defense when facing teams like Camden and Lowndes. Both offenses are similar and neither has a good passing attack.

If Valdosta had a QB like Brooks County Malcolm Parrish, he would be playing. If anyone knows of a QB on our current team that can run and throw, I’m sure coach Gillespie would like to know about it. If the Lowndes tranfer gets eligible, I’m sure he will get a chance. The QB osition did not win or lose the game for the CATS last nite. We didn’t make the plays on offense or defense when we needed to. I don’t think the offense played bad, they only had the ball for 3min the 1st half. Camden had a 80yd and a 85yd TD drive on our defense. They converted some key 3rd and long downs that were key to the outcome. Also, people are talking about the OL and QB, but I think we have a problem at the WR position. Other than #45, who is a freshman, we don’t scare anybody with our wideouts. We also had 2 DL lineman hurt, and that caused our DL to play the wjoe game. With all that being said, we had a chance to win that game.

My son plays defense for the CATS and he says CAMDEN has the best coached- most athletic offensive lineman in the region!!

DostaDawg…..Gocats answered the question with Malcolm Parrish… But there are several others Deshaun Watson to name another. Marietta had A Jennings last year that beat Lowndes with his feet. I would suggest you check the middle school rosters over the past half decade and look at who played QB and then see how they were developed. And you are right it will interesting to see how they use Tai Hatcher (Lowndes transfer). I am not hating on them, I work with those kids everyday and want to see them succeed, it just frustrates me when they are not given the best chance to excel.

HS coaches have opportunities to develop athletes starting at 6th grade….I refuse to believe that there are no athletic QB potentials in our system….just my thought

Coffee has a QB that can move and accurately pass that ball….but for some reason in the Tift game the Offensive Play Calling, I witnessed, was already selecting the receiver before the ball was snapped…. even though we had receivers open all over the field. Coaching lost that game for the Trojans! #3 open on pass plays 70% of the time, but no don’t give a “smart” QB the option to look over the field and throw to an open receiver…. do as you told! Another thing….. why would a team conitnue to attempt torun the ball up the middle, if 5 minutes into the 1st Qtr you already established that the other teams “D” is to strong up the middle? Coffee should have won that game by 2 TD’s!

They move these kids without giving them a fair chance. I was saying if we had a mobile qb we would of won last nite easily. Coach G already said he don’t want a backyard qb which is an insult to our black kids who play qb. We had a kid from Atlanta who was mobile but was never given a fair chance in the Spring so his daddy took him back up north after he realize the qb position is an politics thang at Valdosta. These the facts so we not going far in the playoffs with an slow pocket qb.

From where I was sitting last night, mobility was not the issue for the Valdosta QB. He was under duress whenever he tried to throw, even the slants or quick passing plays. The O line was as much to blame as the QB. Valdostas O Line was bigger than the D Line for Camden, however the D line was quicker and more athletic. Valdosta still has a bright future, they have athletes in place. I think that the defense for Valdosta is ahead of the offense.

The Colquitt County Packers traveled to Lowndes and delivered a 37-7 beat down in a statement win to open up the 1-6A region play. Despite losing their stud defensive lineman Jamiyus Pittman to a broken fibula, the Packers defensive line man-handled the Vikings offensive line. They’ve got a good team,” said Lowndes Coach Randy McPherson. “They whupped us. We had a hard time blocking all night. The game started about as badly as it could for the Vikings. The offense could not move the ball and the defense couldn’t stop the Packers from marching up and down the field as Colquitt built a 14-0 lead in a little more than half a quarter. With the Packers defense stacking the box, the Vikings running backs could find no room, resulting on five consecutive three-and-outs to begin the game. Colquitt held Lowndes to negative yardage through about a quarter and a half of play.Despite the constant nine-man fronts, Lowndes ran the ball 20 times in the first half for just 22 yards.Heading into the locker room, Lowndes seemingly had the momentum on their side. Despite being out gained in the first half 252 to 81, the Vikings were down by only two scores. VALDOSTA TIMES

There were some calls Camden did not get and some Valdosta did not get. I don’t think Camden played or coached well on punt returns or the play before half time that gave Valdosta 2 pts.

I am not being disrespectful to the Valdosta Cats, they do have a good team and could have beaten Camden if there were a few different calls or not fumbled or thrown interceptions, or let the Camden Offense run up and down the field or let Camden’s D stop you.

The final stats from the game might also provide good insight as to why I still beleive Camden should have won by at least 14.
