Friday lookahead: Wayne Co., Alexander, Rutland early surprises

Return to action: No. 1 Sandy Creek and No. 2 Carrollton return to action Friday, after last week’s bye. The defending champion Patriots open Region 5 play at winless Fayette County. Carrollton hosts an improved Columbus team that ended a 19-game losing streak with a win over Northside (Columbus). “I hope Carrollton will notice us, notice the athleticism that we have,” Columbus coach Phil Marino said. “ Our SEC schedule starts on Friday. We want to be competitive.”

Chubb watch: Southeast Whitfield gets its chance to slow down Cedartown running back Nick Chubb tonight, when the Raiders host the Bulldogs. Southeast Whitfield has allowed an average of 12 points in its first three games. Chubb, who is committed to Georgia, already has 987 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Huge game: Th biggest game of the week is No. 5 Griffin at No. 3 Stockbridge. Read more about this game here.

Banner start: No. 6 Wayne County is 4-0 for the first since 1996. The Yellow Jackets travel to Richmond Academy on Friday.

Improved: Alexander (2-1) has already matched last season’s win total. The Cougars host Troup on Friday in a Region 5 battle.

Battle-tested: At 2-2, Marist will enter region play next week with its worst record since 1982, according the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. But the War Eagles are battle-tested. Marist has played the toughest schedule of any AAAA team so far, according to the Maxwell Ratings. The 10th-ranked War Eagles are off this week.

Streaking: Cairo heads to Westover looking for its 25th consecutive region win. The Syrupmakers have defeated the Patriots 13 consecutive times.

Surprise showdown: Two Region 2 surprises square off tonight, when Rutland hosts Veterans. Rutland will be looking for its first 5-0 start in the school history. Rutland has never had a winning season. Veterans is coming off an upset of Westside.

Alexander has great athletes, and one horrible head coach. He is a coach that has a top 10 team every year based on talent and possibilities, but has NO clue. Talk about making 5 star recruits 2 star…Fire Combs !

@!C Combs, I’ve seen Alexander play several times over the past few years and have thought you guys had some good looking athletes. You should be winning more games. It really suprised me to see you guys get beat by Bremen last year after such a big lead. Looks as though they have it together now.
