The Redan-Banneker game, originally canceled Friday when Banneker missed the 5:15 p.m. kickoff time at Hallford Stadium, will be played after all.
The game is set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Panthersville Stadium in DeKalb County.
Both Region 6-AAAA teams had off weeks this week, making the rescheduled game possible.
‘’We’re both off,” Banneker coach Ryan Andrews said. “I want to play the game, my players want to play the game, my parents want to play the game..”
The mixup occurred because the game contract was changed during the summer to move the kickoff from 7:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. to accommodate the homecoming of Stephenson, which played the late game Friday.
Banneker has a new principal and athletic director. Andrews said neither knew of the change, which occurred before they were hired. The contract that Banneker has on file lists a 7:30 p.m. start, Andrews said. Banneker had not arrived by 5:45 p.m., when Redan officials called Banneker.
Andrews, a Banneker graduate in his first season as head coach at his alma mater, said his school endured undue criticism for the miscommunication.
‘’It was at a point where it was starting to become personal,’’ Andrews said. “I just want it known out there that we have a new principal and a new athletic director, and if any of those people had any knowledge of the game being at 5:15, we would have been there on time. We want to play the game.’’
Redan coach Willie Griffieth initially expressed doubt that the game could be made up and wishes his team could heal some injuries this week as planned before subregion play begins.
But like Andrews, he didn’t want to lose a game.
“It’s bad for something like this to happen. Our kids were disappointed not to play,’’ he said. ‘’If we can set it up, we won’t mind playing. It won’t be a problem.’’
