Learned from Friday: From P’Ridge to upside-down Region 8

Topics of discussion this a.m. — Peachtree Ridge, Lovejoy, Coffee, McEachern, Alpharetta, and the wild west that is Region. 8.

First, Peachtree Ridge.

It’s been four years since the Ridge won a playoff game, five since it played in the state championship game against Camden County, seven since it won the state title.

The Lions stamped themselves as contenders again Friday with their 31-30 victory over fifth-ranked Mill Creek. They’ve matched their 2012 win total with a 4-0 start, burying the memory of last season’s losing record, the program’s first since 2004.

Peachtree Ridge running back Jordan Ellis, who has committed to Virginia, rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns, and Mill Creek missed a potential tying extra point in the final two minutes.

- Now, to Lovejoy. The Wildcats, ranked No. 4, beat East Coweta 39-35 on a late touchdown pass after trailing 35-20. The week before, Lovejoy beat Alpharetta 24-23. Is this reason for concern? It might be that East Coweta is decent, too.

- Speaking of Alpharetta, the Raiders avenged their only region loss from 2012 and beat West Forsyth 31-14. They’re probably the team to beat in Region 6.

- No. 2 McEachern beat Marietta 43-30 and helped justify their high ranking. Remember that McEachern hasn’t made it out of the second round since 1999.

- Also remember this fact for future reference: Milton (4-0) has not won a region title since 1952.

- Coffee, ranked last week for the first time since 2008, struggled to beat Mundy’s Mill 18-14. Recall that Lovejoy beat Mundy’s Mill 41-12 despite sitting three defensive starters.

And finally, what might be our top story, but buried here because it takes some time to explain:  What’s up with Region 8?

Since 1993, Grayson, Parkview, Brookwood and South Gwinnett have won or shared every championship in Region 8 of Georgia’s highest classification. The revolution continued Friday. The big four is now 2-13 on the season.

Here is how the state’s most volatile region was turned upside down again:

- Parkview, a quarterfinalist last season, lost to Archer 27-7 and is 0-4 for the first time since 1986. Archer is a 4-year-old school that has never been ranked or won a playoff game but sits atop the region with a 4-0 record overall, 2-0 in region play.

- Grayson, the defending champion, lost 14-7 to Dacula, which was 1-9 last season and previously winless (0-5) against Grayson. Grayson is 1-3, and its streak of six 10-win seasons is endangered. Dacula, under new coach Tommy Jones, now shares the region lead with Archer at 2-2, 2-0.

- South Gwinnett, 9-3 last season, lost to cross-town rival Shiloh 21-14 and fell to 1-3. South Gwinnett had won 11 of the past 12 in the series, including 31-0 last season, a loss that sent Shiloh on an 0-7 slide.

- Berkmar lost 15-12 to Central Gwinnett. Berkmar entered the game 3-0. Central was 0-2. Central won despite less than 100 yards in total offense.

- Brookwood (0-3) sat Friday out. The Broncos play Parkview next week in the resumption of what formerly was metro Atlanta’s best rivalry.

East is more than decent. They are a fine ball team. Region 1 better be ready in the 2nd season. Region 3 is looking more competitive than last season. The only thing Lovejoy needs is time. We are young. Not much is being said about that. Talk about other young teams is abundant but not about ours.

Concern? Yes. Worry, no. Isn’t the name of the game is to win?

One thing about it, this time next week either Brookwood or Parkview one will not be winless.

Lowndes won 63-0, again playing our BTeam the entire second half.

Speaking of running up scores, Valdosta led Newton 31-0 at the half last night, then opened the second half with an on-sides kickoff.

Some really big games this week in region 1-6A. They say it’s hog killing time.

Rush Propst was at the Lowndes game last night, according to FaceBook, with his trophy wife (you know, the one he had 3 kids with while still married to his 1st wife). He sat on the visitors side, on the 45 yard line on row three, directly across from the Lowndes coaches. He had a yellow legal pad and feverishly wrote down plays and alignments. Was that cheating? Was he “stealing signals?” Nope, he didn’t have binoculars! Oops, my bad! Guess he was just publicly reminding the world how the Colquitt B of E sold their souls to win football games.

I saw Propst last night, sideline observer. He WAS stealing signals though. But just like last year when he raised such a ruckas after Lowndes whipped his Hogs in Moultrie, it was not illegal!I did NOT see Buzz Payne last night though. But I’m sure he’ll be cloned by several thousand binocular clad folks next week at Martin Stadium.

All I have to say is keep an eye on Region 5 Teams. Especially Milton, Etowah, and Waltpn. Also What Region would play Region 5 teams in the 1st round of the playoffs?

First, Peachtree Ridge : Since scrimmages don’t count, I can’t say what I think of the Ridge. It was the only time I have had an opportunity to see them. If they have the same personnel as when I saw them, and are doing the same things I saw, they are going to have problems. I know what I saw.

Played Alpharetta last week. If their Qb vs Lovejoy was their #2, they must have a screw loose. He is noy swift a foot but he gets the ball to a nice pair of receivers. Daniel Clements, #86, is a good one. Their tightend, #11 is also worthy of note.
I still like Mceachern. They look good on the field. They carry themselves like a team. It seems their mentality is just right. Put that with talent and coaching and you have a winner.

Although Coffee had to fight to take Mundy’s Mill, a team we beat 41-12, I still like them in region 1. They may get some help from another but it is, in my opinion, theirs to lose. I know what MM brought to the table and that is no slouch. Those kids would be at Lovejoy now.

Region 8 == I’m Loving this. Always being the end of the soft, cupcake, mush, puddy, weak and sorry comments, I now get to dish. Looks like my earlier question about the possibility of certain teams representing this region just may come to pass.

@ Sportsnut, you are crazy if you think region 1 is Coffee’s to lose. I admit that they are doing very well this year, but region play had not started yet. Coffee might be the fourth best team in the region behind Camden, Colquitt, and Lowndes. But I guess we shall see in the coming weeks.

I may just be crazy. I could be wrong though. I, for some reason believe it will come down to Camden or Coffee. I think Lowndes is not that good. That loss, to date, is Newton’s only win. You are correct in that the region is just starting but you have to remember that all teams change each season and are not always what they were. Take a look at region 8.

I think many teams lost a ton of talent last year and this is an overall down year for the states elite. North Gwinnett is looking better by far than everyone else. That makes it more interesting for me. Many fans think their teams should do this or that but things change.

I was at Coffee Mundy Hills game..Both teams played well but alot of flags on both teams . Mundy Hills has a very good young team and GREAT fans. Coffee is very young and has a true freshman QB …plays 3 or more 9th graders. They will get alot better but the Hogs, Camden and Vikings are the teams to beat.. But Coffee will never quit anymore they will fight till the end. Coach said it was Homecoming and they practiced bad all week..no excuses..Lets play ball.

Sportsnut, Coffee will not win Region 1 this year.
Colquitt- May not be explosive, but they know how to keep games close with that defense and close out close games.
Camden- Young team with speed to burn, but they have pedigree and know how to win. They have the backs to make that Wing T thing effective. If they can get that defense together.
Lowndes- A mirror image of Camden, may not be as explosive as Camden but like Camden they know how to win.
Valdosta-Look similar to Colquitt, relies on a defense to be effective. Unlike Colquitt, Valdosta can explode with the big plays.
Coffee- Young, but they have a never give up attitude. Very fast on defense and relies on that defense to setup their offense.
With that being said, hard to say who will win Region 1, Valdosta is in Camden Friday. Colquitt and Lowndes travel to Camden this year, so there will be 3 huge games in Camden this year. This may be an awesome year for Region 1, why? the disparity in the region. However I will not count any of the top 4 from making a run to state. Man I Love high school football.

What can I say ? I think they will win their share of region games and they will get help.

@ WildHawg2012 == I am not refusing to mention them. I like them. I may be fooling myself and I could be completely wrong. Just a feeling. Until someone knocks you guy’s off, you are clearly the consensus favorites in region 1.

There are more teams this year capable of taking the crown. It will be a surprise to some when the 1st round is complete. You can not say this team or that team is superior. North Gwinnett looks the part but we still have a lot of football to play.

@ i’mjustsayinwhati’msaying == In line one, you say “Coffee will not win region 1″. In line 13, you say “With that being said, Hard to say who will win region 1″. So you admit Coffee has a chance?

The Mundys Mill game was bizarre. If a flag was not thrown on every play, the officials would gather over the ball and confer for 30-45 seconds. Coffee never got their up-tempo going. Mundys Mill is a good team. They gave Coffee all they wanted and played clean and hard.

Does Coffee have a chance to get a play-off spot? Yes. Are they the favorite? No, They are a young team in uncharted waters but they did get a very needed wake-up call Friday,

We start finding out who’s who this weekend, No one is talking about Tift who almost came back, it appears, against TCC,

NGHS09 yeah I think you need to know that what’s happened in the past doesn’t always happen in the present. MC and PR are both capable of beating NG. NG has a tendency to look OHHHHHHHHH so good then all of a sudden run into somebody that will hit them in the mouth and they slink away. Now there’s some history you can examine.

@BK – You may have wanted to wait and see how Valdosta makes out against Camden this week before saying TCC is just “Pretty good”. I believe TCC turned the ball over 5-6 times and still put Tift away. Or maybe Tift may be a little better than you think. After all. Something usually causes turnovers. No. You know what? I think you’re right after all. Why don’t you tell the Vikes they can have a “let down” against Tift. You know. Rest up between the Coffee and Camden away games.

@ FAN – Thanks for the info. I read the game summary on the Tifton Gazette web page. Sounds like The Blue Devils benefited from a lot of turnovers by TCC. Or it could be Tift just had a bad night like Coffee. See you down in Tifton Friday night.

I am so excited about Region 1 play starting. The historic favorites are still the favorites. And rightly so. I do think Region 1 has six teams that can each win on a given night. Team defense may turn out to be very important this year. It could come down to tiebreakers to set the play-off seedings.

Considering the quality of opponents, I feel Coffee is very fortunate to have made it through the first four games with no serious injuries. The strength and conditioning program seems to really be paying off.

Again my condolences to The Packers on losing Pittman.

How is everyone else in the region doing health wise?

Let’s play some football!

@ole ram – Somehow I knew after not showing up last week when we won you would be here this week when we lost. Too bad you can’t support your team when they are down as well as up. NGHS 09

@ Playoff Vet…Well you could look at it that way, but NG doesn’t lose to either of those teams…and history shows that…so your comment is irrelevant, as well as your comment about NG losing once they get “hit in the mouth”. Have you ever seen NG play? They are always the ones doing the hitting. Sphire and company have always had PTR’s and MC’s number. Oh yeah, one more thing…NG doesn’t hardly lose in the regular season, and they’ve never played MC or PTR in the playoffs, so I like NG’s chances in regards to your comment. Should be a good playoff race from here on out.

I carefully drove the “secret” way to get to Parkview High School for the Archer game last Friday night out of habit (one never travels on Five Forks Trickum or River Road to get there). I guess I did out of memory. There was no necessity. In 2002 there was a line of people double the length of the Parkview parking lot waiting to get into the stadium before it opened at 5 PM, two and one half hours BEFORE the 7:30 game to decide the State Championship. Such navigational capabilities were essential once upon a time to avoid waiting for what seemed like hours. Used to have to park in a neighborhood far away. Friday I just parked in the nearby elementary school lot. There were plenty of parking places. How times have changed. This Friday, Parkview will play Brookwood. Neither has a victory. Bring coffee and NoDoz.

@ GwinnettDad == There are not many times like that around here. Although our first game at home was an exception. Mundy’s Mill is not quite 5 miles from Lovejoy and many, if not all the kids know each other. The fire marshal closed the gates with about 200 or so trying to get in late in the first quarter.

I loved that. Since I live so close to the stadium, traffic is no problem but I like those type of games. The atmosphere is terrific. We don’t play anyone else in the county but Morrow so we don’t get the gates like we used to when we had Jonesboro, North Clayton, Riverdale and Mt. Zion in our region.

I’m sure it was a welcome relief, to a certain extent.
