List: State of Georgia players on NFL rosters

There were 95 former Georgia high school football players on active NFL rosters for opening day this season. That’s the fourth-most of any state behind California (225), Florida (186) and Texas (184). That is according to

Other facts you might like to know:

- Five Georgia high schools have three alumni on NFL rosters. They are Marist, Sandy Creek, Statesboro, Stephenson and Westlake. Only about 70 high schools in the country have that many or more. Norland of Miami and St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., have the most with six.

- The Falcons and Colts have more former Georgia players on their roster than any other NFL team with seven. Next are the Chiefs and Panthers (six apiece) and the Bills, Jaguars, Steelers and Texans (five apiece).

- Twenty-three Georgia NFL players played at the University of Georgia. Georgia Tech claims 12. Six played at Auburn. No other school has more than three. Sixteen Georgia NFL players played at schools below the FBS (formerly called Division 1-A) level.

- More than a quarter of Georgia players in the NFL (are defensive backs. Some of the more prominent ones are Bandon Boykin, Leodis McKelvin, Buster Skrine, Bacarri Rambo, Champ Bailey and Eric Berry.

- Four of the NFL’s 32 punters and three of the 32 long snappers are former Georgia players. There are no Georgia place-kickers in the NFL.

- There are three Georgia quarterbacks in the NFL. Only one, Cam Newton, is a starter. There are nine former Georgia wide receivers in the NFL, three that start – Stephen Hill, Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas. All played at Georgia Tech.

- Several widely known Georgia players are not on rosters this season, some who have had long careers. They include Leonard Pope (Americus), Keith Brooking (East Coweta), Randy McMichael (Peach County), Jeff Backus (Norcross) and Takeo Spikes (Washington County).

Below is a list that includes the 95 players who were on opening day active rosters, according to This list includes 11 others that GHSF Daily added to account for Georgia players on rosters as of Wednesday, but not on the opening-day active list. There might be others who fit this category that we missed. If you know of any, please let us know.

The players are listed in the alphabetical order of their Georgia high schools.

Mike – Thanks for the info. You are correct about Fernando Velasco. He was not on an opening day active roster, thus his absence from the list. We’ll add him. I don’t think that Gary Guyton is on a roster.

Just to be clear to readers – Our list includes all 95 Georgia players who were on active opening-day rosters. (We actually found one more, Gainesville’s Kendrick Lewis, who is listed by the NFL with his New Orleans high school prior to Katrina.)

However, any Georgia players currently in the NFL who were not on active opening-day rosters must be reported here to be added to the list. We added several ourselves, and readers have reported others. The NFL doesn’t actively update that list, and rosters change every day. If you think somebody is missing, let us know.

FWIW, I read an analysis of last year’s NFL players on a PER CAPITA basis, and Louisiana and Alabama were the states with the most NFL players. Georgia and Florida were third and fourth (I can’t recall the order). California and Texas, because of their large populations, were way down the list. One was 17th.

BC – Chris Hubbard is no longer on the Steelers’ roster. I hope he gets back, but that’s why we didn’t include him on the list. And yes, good note on Tim Walton. Best of luck to him in STL.

Most NFL players per capita -

1. Louisiana

I do think the per capita list is more relevant to the quality of high school football being played in those states. I am constantly amazed by the quality of athletes coming our of the state of Louisiana (not just football)…and how LSU is able to keep most of them in state to play.

1. The Falcons have not had a lot of high draft picks in recent years, and the Dawgs have been putting a lot of high picks into the NFL.

2. Most of the remaining Georgia players that have been signed by the Falcons have not remained long with the team due to performance, not Falcon bias against Georgia.

3. Probably should not hate the in-state NFL team. Their draft selections in recent years have made them a Super Bowl contender. I would prefer that over having a bunch of players that are not Super Bowl type players on the team, no matter what college for which they played. I would bet everything Blank would love to have a roster filled with Super Bowl type players from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, West Georgia, Georgia Southern, etc……$$$$$.

I think Stafford qualifies as a starter. Also, there are 40 UGA players in the NFL, not 23.

Todd: Frank Bush who is the LB Coach for the Rams been on a roster as Player/Coach since 1984. Do people realize that when Atlanta played Denver for the SB, that it may have been the only school in the history of the Super Bowl, to have a coach,(Frank Bush) and two players(Chuck Smith & Willie Green) from the same H.S. Clarke Central, where current Chiefs, and one time Falcon Dunta Robinson, as well as 20 year kicker John Kasay was from. Also Mike Defelice from that 2000 Arizona D-Backs WS Team was a Gladiator, and current Braves catcher Brian McCann. GLADIATOR NATION produces champions!

Zippy – These are players from the state of Georgia, not necessarily the University of Georgia. The 23 refers to state of Georgia players in the NFL who also played at UGA. Stafford is a starter, but he’s not from Georgia.

Tommy – T. King is a practice squad player, as you noted. Think I’ll put him in the honorable mention category since he’s not officially on the roster.

So WHY in the heck is Pajamas trying so hard to recruit from DC, Md. and friggin’ New Jersey?

I do realize that SOME of the HS talent in GA cannot qualify for GT, but with ND, Vandy and Stanford making concerted efforts to target GA and the Metro Atlanta Area, then there must be quite a few HS players from GAthat are both talented AND smart enough to major in Business Admin at GT.

CPJ’s horrible recruiting, the gift that keeps on ruining GT FB slowly but surely.

Pitsburg Steelers #97, Camron Heywood (PRHS $ Ohio State), and 2. #9, Drew Butler (PRHS and UGA). The third is with the Arixona Cardinals, #51. Kevin Minter (PRHS and LSU).
