AAAAAA roundup: Lovejoy thwarts East Coweta upset attempt

By Score Atlanta

Alpharetta 31, West Forsyth 17: Visiting Alpharetta used a pair of Vito Priore touchdown passes to take a 17-10 lead into halftime. Alpharetta’s Austin King opened the second half with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Andre Herton. Chase Stratton blocked a third quarter West Forsyth punt that set up a 1-yard quarterback sneak by King.

Archer 27, Parkview 7: Gabe Tiller completed 11 of 14 passes for 155 yards and threw touchdowns to K.J. Palmer and Kyle Davis. Palmer finished with three receptions for 70 yards, while the visiting Tigers also got 114 yards on 18 carries by Randy Nails. Archer led 14-0 early and 14-7 at the half.

Centennial 45, Johns Creek 34: Host Centennial answered an early 14-13 Johns Creek lead with two Christian Robinson touchdown receptions to take a 27-14 lead into the half. Centennial quarterback Luke Able opened the third quarter with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Alex Richemond and running back Caden Herring iced the game with a 62-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Central Gwinnett 15, Berkmar 12: Central Gwinnett used a safety in the first quarter and a return of the ensuing free kick by Major Bellamy to edge Berkmar. The Black Knights’ narrow victory clinched their first win of the season and knocked the visiting Patriots from the ranks of the unbeaten. This was Central Gwinnett’s third consecutive win over Berkmar and fourth in the last five years.

Coffee 18, Mundy’s Mill 14: Tyreke Polk threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns for host Coffee. The first touchdown was a 42-yard pass to Jalen Wilkerson and it was followed by a 24-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Bussell. The rushing attack totaled 198 yards on 37 attempts. Polk also rushed for a two-point conversion.

Langston Hughes 34, Rockdale County 0: Host Langston Hughes was led by Robert Saunders, who returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown and rushed seven yards for a touchdown in the second half. Emile Sexton also had a rushing touchdown of four yards, and Keenan Humphrey hooked up with Bingo Morton for a 12-yard touchdown. The Hughes defense had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Lassiter 42, Cherokee 41: Visiting Cherokee trailed 42-28 with six minutes remaining and nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback. Spencer Ashley tossed five touchdown passes in the game including a potential game-tying 20-yard score to Andrew Harris with less than a minute to go, but the Warriors missed the extra point. Lassiter’s Will Anderson threw three touchdown passes in the victory.

Lovejoy 39, East Coweta 35: Host Lovejoy trailed 35-20 late in the third quarter before scoring 19 unanswered points. Jeremiah Kirkland scored three rushing touchdowns for Lovejoy and quarterback Quintarius Neely finished with three touchdown passes, including a 27-yard game-winning throw to Preston Williams. East Coweta quarterback Bryce Gemmel rushed for a touchdown and passed two scores to Markell Boston.

Norcross 38, Duluth 3: The Blue Devils evened their mark at 2-2 by blowing away their Gwinnett County rivals. Duluth’s woes continue to mount up as the squad fell to 0-4. With the exception of their 9-3 defeat in season opener versus Berkmar, all of the Wildcats’ losses have been by double figures.

North Cobb 55, Kennesaw Mountain 13: North Cobb racked up 500 total yards of offense to overwhelm host Kennesaw Mountain and pick up its second win of the season. The Warriors jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter before Kennesaw Mountain got on the scoreboard with a second-quarter touchdown. North Cobb led 34-6 at halftime and extended its advantage to 55-6 in the third quarter before calling off their starters. The Mustangs added a touchdown late in the fourth to cap off the game’s scoring.

Quarterback Tyler Queen rushed for three touchdowns and threw for three more to lead the victorious Warriors. Devin Granville, Torrance McGee and Jeremy Bell caught the scoring strikes for North Cobb, which also got two touchdown runs from Jevonte Herrod. Bell came up big on special teams as well, finding the endzone via a blocked-punt return.

North Gwinnett 63, Meadowcreek 0: Quarterback Hayden Sphire was 12 of 15 passing for 201 yards and six touchdowns, all in the first half. Caleb Scott caught three touchdown passes, and Nate Brown and Almonzo Brown caught two and one, respectively. C.J. Leggett added a rushing touchdown for the host Bulldogs. Dante Sawyer returned a fumble 15 yards for a score.

Shiloh 21, South Gwinnett 14: Shiloh scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull out a comeback win at home, getting touchdown runs of 70 and 26 yards from Charles Shavers. Shavers had 222 yards rushing and all three touchdowns for the Generals. Shiloh scored its last touchdown with less than a minute to play after turning South Gwinnett over on downs.

Walton 47, Woodstock 40: Deontae Robinson gave host Woodstock a 20-10 second-quarter lead on a 1-yard touchdown run. Walton quarterback Price Wilson led the comeback with touchdown passes to Bayley Wolff, Maurice Gibson and sophomore Chad Clay. Sophomore running back Karekin Brooks scored two touchdowns for Walton and Christian Lucas added a pair of field goals.

Hell of a comeback. I sat and said to those around me that this was the first home loss since the infamous defeat at the hands of Glynn Academy in the first round in 2010. Then came halftime.

For the first time in a long time, I saw adjustments made to disrupt what the opposing offense was having a good night doing. There may be hope for us yet. East Coweta came to play and play they did. Congrats to the coaching staff for making the change in technique that allowed the team to get back in it.

Preston Williams is a star in the making. So is “Mays” Mays Neely. Kirkland did his thing. Still I see lots of work to be done in the secondary. Fundamentals. William’s touchdown catch with 37 seconds left was one of pure beauty. One step, not even a yard into the endzone, leaping and cradling the ball over a defender, totally changed the entire stadium. East had this game.

Lovejoy showed heart and did not stop playing. We are not what we were but we are Lovejoy and we are coming to play ball when there is a game to be played.

we will find out next week what lowndes has. A win or a close loss to colquitt and i will be ok. I really think lowndes is good. I think our boys got a little “bigheaded” bc a lot of people were telling them how good they were and then they lost to newton bc they thought they could just show up and win the game..and they found out after 15 penalties and 5 fumbles..you arent going to beat anyone. I think it has woke lowndes up . Lovejoy looks a little off to me…maybe i am wrong. Colquitt will certainly be the best team we have played so far….and i think we will be the best team they have played also…just my opinion.

lowndes 63-0 over hardaway tonight. Hardaway looked good in uniform and that was about it. They returned 90% of the same team we beat last year 57-0. Some felt they had really improved after being 2-1 , i think they may have improved, but right now our vikings are just focused and angry and i still believe we have a top 5 defense in state. Hardaway ran 35 plays tonight and had a grand total of 30 yds. The one deep ball they attempted..brandon roberts #31 intercepted it. Our jv played the entire 2nd half and did so with a running clock against hardaways varisty. It was 49-0 at halftime. The play calling tonight was kinda elementary with colquitt scouts watching. I really think this team is coming together and that loss really did us some good. I expect a win next fri against the pack

some say the pack are good and i have spoke with a few in colquitt who says they were better last year. mostly i have heard that the defense is a little better than last years but the offense is not as good as last years. It will be interesting at martin stadium next fri night. Pay attention to the kickers in this game…#87 nick hart for lowndes kicks the ball off in the endzone 95% of the time and he can kick a 50 yd field goal if need be. I cant wait for game…

Lovejoy finding ways to win but they can’t play with fire too much longer, they have the region left and if they slip up they may really get burned. Still a sound football squad and they have time to fix somethings that’s for sure. Cherokee played like their life was on the line but they can relate with Mill Creek….missed PATS will doom ya! Peachtree Ridge may be game now for North Gwinnett we’ll see, while McEachern is a handful for sure!

Region 4 looks strong this year. Region 5, not so much. At least not right now. Walton and Lassiter squeak by Woodstock and Cherokee and give up at least 40 points each in the process?? Yikes.

Coffee came out flat and sloppy as they usually do but never could quite seem to get on track. Congratulations to Mundys Mill. They are a pretty darn good football team. Last nights game could have been the wake-up call Coffee needed before the start of region play.

I can’t say when I have ever seen as many penalty flags as I saw tonight. I have to give it to the officials. They threw them without prejudice. It hurt Coffee worse though. The Trojans just could not get their up-tempo game going. You know that old saying that if you watch film closely you could most likely find something to penalize someone for on every play? That was just about what happened tonight.

A win is a win though. I would not want to be a Trojan at practice Monday. Next week Tift. And if the game with TCC was as close as the score, it will be a good one.

Let’s play some football!

@Sportsnut……A coworker of mine lives in Cowetta county , all week he was telling us “Look out for the biggest Upset of the year” His youngest is a team member for EC and he was saying all week how hard that they were preparing for Lovejoy and how badly they wanted the win…….I wouldn’t sweat it , the last few years EC has been a .500 – .600 team…..Personally I think that EC is a better team than the record and some of the scores shows…..They’ve got the athletes in Sharpsburg , why they can’t come around is a mystery to me.

If Coffee plays at Tift like they did last night, Tift will put a hurtin on them… The Trojans could not get out the rut they were in from minute 1 last night… Coffee100: You are correct…. Pruitt will fix this in practice on Monday and every Trojan will realize they have been at football practice. Just an observation: If Miller, 56, is a D-1 prospect…. I’m gonna win the lottery tonight! I am not impressed with his efforts.

BIG CHIEF WHOOPUM- good game to watch last night…lots of weapons and speed on both sides. Not sure why May-retta insisted on single coverage so often on #21, but THANKYA. We sure seem to be a 2nd quarter team…second week in a row we sputter a bit at the start and then just explode before halftime. Best part to me is that we played with a bit more discipline, regardless of how a select few of our Blue Devil friends like to get on certain internet sites and paint us up as “those mean ol’ dirty Indians from that hick town west of us.” I find it humorous- those select few made the same excuses last week after Hillgrove beat ‘em and will likely have an excuse for any other losses they have this season. Anything to keep from admitting they got beat by a better team.

@ Bk == Lovejoy is not down, but we did take a step back. Our kids are learning how to win. East simply came to play.

@ HSFB Follower == As long as they keep winning. Last night took character. Last night was a good win. You are correct in that we need to fix a few things but I think we will be o.k.

@ Reeze == The Indians always play Lovejoy tough. The used to be our region mates. They had this game. The Cats just kept playing. Until the end, they kept playing. I am sure EC wanted it bad. It has been a while since they beat us. They will beat many and if they stay healthy, the 1st round of the playoffs will be good to them.

@sportsnut= Congrats on another close one. Lovejoy will be ok I mean your offense keeps scoring points and the offensive chemistry has not peaked yet. Your defense is an area that dominated everyone last year and you guys did loose some Studs!!! Lovejoy scored 13 points on Colquitt but I assure u they wont be held under 20 the rest of the season by anyone else this year cause that Rec QB combo as well as Kirkland will only get better. We had to play lights out football to win that game and the cats still had a chance at the end so I may not be a Lovejoy fan I do respect them and they will be fine. Go Pack

Hello !!! I am new to this blog. I see that there is some pretty dog gone good convo as to who has the best team in each region and in state each week on here. I am a colquitt county fan. Lived there for the last 14 years and its good to see so much excitement back in the football program again. Like him or not, propst has brought back passion to our football program and is a great coach.

I will say this. Some of you on here seem to be down on lowndes since they lost to newton. Bksmith14 is obviously not. He never is though. According to him the vikings can beat anyone. HA.!! I will say this though, i watched them play hardaway last night. I sat on the visitor side. I also saw coach propst at the game with his family and a few other coaches and i sat close enough to him that i could hear some of the things he was saying . I want divulge everything, but he was impressed with the speed lowndes has on defense and he did mention that this would be the fastest defense they have seen all year. He also made comment to how lowndes looks as good as ever.

I will say this from what i saw. They will have the fastest defense we have seen. #17 for them is a beast and so is #32. Overall i feel we can score on them with the pass, but we have to give mobley some time. It will be very difficult to run it on lowndes. hardaway had a big o line and some speedy backs and it just didnt matter. Lowndes has not faced a defense like they are about to face next friday. They may have a good defense but i believe our is just as good. Its going to be a great game, and for anyone thinking lowndes is not good this year, well this is one pack fan who knows different. they could have hung 87 on hardaway had they really wanted to. Pack 17-10 over lowndes next fri. !!

Look forward to chopping it up with u all season long. I am born in Colquitt and graduated from their too so I am and always will bleed BLACK & GOLD!!! I now live in the Columbus area and let me tell u Hardaway will make any team look fast as a matter of fact this whole Columbus area is not a good football area and it has 9 high schools here but Carver is the best and u see what we did to them. Carver is only 3A and Hardaway is 5A but yet Carver would beat them if they played. They have played since I been up here and Carver has owned them so trust me I knew Hardaway would not score on Lowndes.

Given how classless Newton was last night in defeat, I can only imagine how much more lack of class they showed after beating Lowndes. I have never seen a less disciplined team with so many unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.than Newton. The lack of character flows from the coach on down. A leader of young men should never curse a referee under any circumstance.

There are things going on now that contribute to a winning attitude. They are facing adversity early and hopefully it will serve them well later on.

I feel we can beat Lowndes , but I do have some concerns myself with the speed they have. The loss to newton was a fluke, just as I heard propst mention last night. We will have to try and beat them through the air and rely on our defense to make big plays. They have a lot of running backs with a lot of speed. We can match their speed. I am going with pack 17-10

@ DeKalb Co guy == I can’t look at it that way. Lovejoy is playing good ball but it could be better. The truth is that they are overall young and many don’t have the football instincts to be expecting too much from them just yet. Also, the region is much improved. I saw them all last season and they were young. The first round of the playoffs are going to be shocking.

I didn’t see the game Lowndes lost to Newton. They are running a spread offense now, but they don’t have an athletic quarterback. #2 looks like a game manager, not a game changer. Their best QB is a freshman #18 but they’re playing him 3rd on their depth chart. Anyone with ANY football IQ can see he’s their best QB.

ppaddy123…you are wrong my friend. #2 is the best option we have a qb right now and he has dont a pretty good job. He is not going to beat you with his legs but he runs the offense smoothly and knows the plays.

athletically ,, yea #18 is better, but #18 also threw 3 or 4 ints in a 9th grade game already this year also. You have no clue what you are saying. If you want to know about lowndes, ask me

Packnation…hello and welcome!! Glad ol propst noticed we had some speed. Ive been telling everyone how fast we are. He was sitting right near him as well and said he also could here him chatting with the guy to his left while they were taking notes. Let em try those screens and slants..we will be ready. bksmith14 you are a “homer” You think everything “Lowndes” The truth of the matter is, day in and day out, athletically Lowndes can line up with just about anyone in the state. WOW! Just been reading all the posts in AAAAAA, the inconsistency this year, there’s a lot of 1 loss teams this year. Looks like years race is wide open for any team that really wants it. My best pick is North Gwinnett to win it all. Gwinnett County teams has taken charge of winning the highest classification crown over the last several years.

Sorry South Georgia teams, your dominant reign has ended. The Valdosta’s, Lowdnes & Camden County’s now belong to the power houses’ in North Georgia. Even in AAAAA division Tucker & Stephenson, this year will be fighting it out for the State crown. I believe that this shift level of ownership is due because, now North Georgia and big counties treat their feeder programs like the high school level, in Dekalb County, they have created a playoff system for Middle schools which has attracted many quality coaches and even high school coaches to get more involved with the younger kids…

Once again, Fire the coaches at Walton, horrible job of putting kids in the right position, how do you play without a safety and you have all purpose athlete in DJ Smiith who is arguably the best athlete in the state and he touches the ball 4 times, offenses stay away from him, they may try him 2-3 times a game, pull a linebacker(which u shouldn’t miss, they aren’t making plays anyhow) and go with another DB at times, adapt to change, get out of that 1950’s offense and defense y’all running, it’s a new era in football and its called the spread, up tempo offenses,
