Class A Blog: Mt. Paran-Trion, Seminole County-Pelham, Pace-FPD headline this week’s slate of games

By S. Thomas Coleman
For the AJC

We’ve got a short list of “big games” this week in Class A. Here are three that should be well worth the price of admission, plus three more to pay attention to as well:

Mount Paran Christian School (2-1) at Trion (3-0). This crossover game in Region 6 is probably the top Class A game of the weekend. Upstart Mt. Paran battled hard but came up just short last week at undefeated (4-0) No. 2 Landmark Christian, 14-7. Now QB Jake Allen, RB Dorian Walker and WR Emoni Williams will try to rebound against a Trion team that is averaging 40 points per game while yielding just nine. The Bulldogs – led by its hard-running backfield of Malik Martin, Devonya Farmer, Bradley Womack and Chandler Latham – manhandled Walker (2-1) last week, 42-7.

No. 8 Seminole County (3-0) at AA Pelham (3-0). Seminole County is off to a fast start and will try to knock off a Class AA team that is just as hot. Seminole County held off a scrappy team from Clinch County (1-3) last week, 21-14, as County RB Robert Speights scored on a 66-yard touchdown run and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Peters, while QB Alex Fudge scored on a 3-yard run.

No. 10 Pace Academy (3-0) at First Presbyterian Day (0-2). Pace will look to continue its “revenge tour” this week in Macon at FPD. The Knights trounced King’s Ridge Christian last week, 39-6, after losing to the Tigers 48-20 last season. The previous week, Pace smashed Athens Academy, 42-9, a year after being beaten 42-9 by the Spartans. Last season, FPD defeated Pace, 24-20. The Knights are led by Stanford-bound DB/RB Denzel Franklin, senior WR Kameron Uter and junior QB Kevin Johnson.

Three more to watch:

King’s Ridge Christian (2-1) at Darlington (2-1)

Class AAA Southeast Bulloch (1-0-1) at Telfair County (3-0)

Wilkinson County (0-2) at No. 9 Irwin County (2-0-1)

Your turn, Class A Blog heads. Until Saturday …

@ STC …. You know me, I’ve got to see for myself! I’ll be down in Macon at the Pace Academy / First Presbyterian game …. I hear a lot of good things about the Big Three of Pace from my scouting resources … Franklin, Uter, & Johnson. I’ll be sure to send you some updates of the game as it goes. Thanks for all the coverage !!

Trion is not blowing Mt. Paran out. I think they’ll win, but it’ll be a good game. Not as high scoring as people are saying either. I say 28-14.

MPC has given up only 3 offensive TDs this year. Trion will not score more than 2! Only team they have played with a win is Walker who have lost half the team from last year and who have beat 2 teams with 0 wins? Walker fumbled 4 or 5 times? Good luck to all teams!

It will be an interesting game. Trion appears to be big, strong and dominated by seniors. We are young and fast. If Trion doesn’t tackle well we will run away with it. Excited for the game.

Eaglesfan….If you apply the same logic about the teams Walker played to MPC you may come up with a similar result. MPC has beat two teams that have a combined ONE win between them and MPC lost to the only team that has a winning record. MPC could be easly 1-2 except for a hail mary pass. That is why they have to play the game !
Good luck to you and your team.

What happened to the Pace passing game? Did FPD blitz every play? Bewildered??

It was just terrible game. Their corners covered well and they blitzed every game. First drive of the second half we ran all the way down the field. But then Staples got injured. And Franklin isn’t allowed to run much

Well I hope the injury is not too bad and he bounces back because they still have to play ELCA and Landmark well to have some legitimacy. Keep fighting Pace!

Should be a wake up call for Pace tonight. Gonna need to play perfect to have a chance at beating ELCA and Landmark. And we’d definitely need Malik healthy. Anyone know how good Our Lady of Mercy and Strong Rock are this year?

@ STC … don’t ask me how, but I couldn’t find your email address to give you updates tonight on the Pace / FPD game . Sorry about that, but here’s my take on how I seen it ….
First off, hats off to FPD for fighting hard and never quitting coming up with the 28-18 win. They made the most of their opportunities, while Pace kept blowing theirs. In my opinion Pace was far more athletic than FPD but kept hurting themselves with turnovers. The big 3 of Pace are impressive ( QB, RB, WR ). I mean no disrespect to the coaches at Pace, but Pace was outcoached tonight by FPD. I felt Pace should have went with the running game and stayed with it. FPD rushed three and dropped back in coverage on defense …. on offense they pounded the ball, sucked the Pace LB’s up and then hit Pace for chunks of yardage by throwing the ball. I’m sure Pace will bounce back from this loss and do well the rest of the season.

@ Pace Student ….. Pace will be OK against Strong Rock, Mt Vernon, and maybe OLM ….. but you might have your work cut out against Landmark & ELCA.

Hats Off to First Presbyterian Day …. tough, well coached team that played hard tonight. Mt Paran …. for me doubting and drinking the Trion Kool Aid. Seminole Co …. for making me a believer. Very impressive wins!

Seems that Landmark and ELCA are up for a showdown again at the end of the season and in the Championship at the dome. Landmark has a couple of players with injuries but are still strong and well coached. ELCA is ELCA, hard hitting, confident, and efficient. Both of these teams should meet each other undefeated. Both quarterbacks are tremendous athletes with both teams having all state players. ELCA definitely having the edge. Its been said that Landmark beat their best team a couple of years ago to move on to the state champs. Its also been said that this Landmark team is as good or better than the team a few years back. Unpredictable high school football…there is just nothing like it. Its the purest type of football played!!

At last, you could be correct. There is still a lot of football to be played. I was very impressed by Landmark last week. Not sure how the brackets will be set, but look for us to run the table and finish 9-1.

@ At Last……. Your comment about ELCA/Landmark was pretty accurate, except for the part about Landmark beating ELCA’s best team a few yrs ago. Last yrs ELCA team was WAY better than the team from 2011. Mostly because of the QB play from Dalton Ethridge, but overall, a better team ! This yrs. ELCA team hasn’t fully hit it’s stride yet, but is also better than that 2011 team. None of which matters, because that’s ancient history. I’m glad Landmark is back up from last year. It’s always more fun when both teams are at their best. Should be a good one at the end of the regular season !

@ LoveFridayFootball……. You’re right ! 3-0 against the weak side of the region doesn’t carry a lot of weight ! FPD isn’t as good yet as they were a few yrs ago & Pace couldn’t do it ! Wait till they ride down to McDonough !!!
