Cairo’s region dominance; Statesboro coach eyes Donquell Green

By David Purdum / For the AJC

Region dominance: Cairo has won 23 consecutive region games, a streak that dates back to 2009. The Syrupmakers open Region 1-AAAA play Friday against Crisp County. Cairo has won the last 10 meetings against the Cougars.

‘He’s got it’: Undefeated and ninth-ranked Statesboro takes on its toughest challenge so far, when dynamic quarterback Donquell Green and No. 6 Burke County visit Friday. Statesboro coach Steve Pennington believes Green is one of the best he’s faced.  “I’ve been doing this for 34 years and have seen some good ones, like Cam Newton,” Pennington said. “When I watch this guy (Green), pound-for-pound, he’s got it.” Look for Statesboro linebacker Anthony Gore, who Pennington describes as a “pleasant surprise,” to meet up with Green.

Rest for the best: No. 1 Sandy Creek and No. 2 Carrollton are off this week. The two region 5-AAAA rivals meet Nov. 1, at Carrollton in what’s shaping up to be the game of the year in AAAA.

Defense: After giving up 35 points in an opening win over Dutchtown, No. 5 Griffin has posted back-to-back shutouts. The Bears host Woodland on Friday. The Wolfpack were blanked, 34-0, by Woodward Academy last week.

Checking Chubb: Ridgeland held Cedartown Super 11 running back Nick Chubb to roughly 120 yards last season in a 42-21 win. Chubb averaged 288 yards on the ground in Bulldogs’ other nine games. Ridgeland travels to Cedartown on Friday. “It’s going to take all 11 guys to stop (Chubb),” said Ridgeland coach Mark Mariakis, “and even then, if he finds a crease, we don’t have anyone that is going to catch him.” Chubb is committed to Georgia.

Notable Nuggets

–Mary Persons has allowed 12 points in getting off to a 3-0 start. Mary Persons is at Perry on Friday.

–Rutland is averaging 46 points during its 3-0 start. The Hurricanes host West Laurens on Friday.

–Washington is 3-0 for the second straight season under coach Rodney Hackney and is outscoring teams by an average score of 39-5.3. The Bulldogs take on 2-1 Stone Mountain at Lakewood Stadium on Friday.

–Undefeated Gilmer has allowed only 19 points in its opening three wins. The Bobcats were 3-0 last season, before falling to Dalton in overtime in Week 3. Gilmer is at Dalton on Friday.

–The Lanier Longhorns are 3-0 for the first time in the school’s brief history. They open Region 8-AAAA play tonight at Madison County.

–No. 4 Monroe Area, led by quarterback Stanton Truitt, is averaging 47 points in its 3-0 start. The Purple Hurricanes are at winless Lumpkin County on Friday.

–Walnut Grove ended its nine-game losing streak last week with a 21-9 win over Howard (Macon). The Warriors host Stephens County on Friday.

Watched Mr. Green last week. He is all that. But what Statesboro better be concerned with is when they line their #2 QB, the big senior, up alongside him and either one takes the snap. He is a horse.

@89 Bears – I imagine they’ve seen the film. Coffee wasn’t prepared for the two of them together. Had to adjust big time. I was also surprised at Burkes size. A little bigger than Coffee I think but not as quick. Good luck tonight.

I’ll be at the Trojan game of course but any idea if the game film can be watched later on?
