Lowndes? Brookwood? Who won’t make the playoffs?

This week’s Top 10 in Class AAAAAA features an odd fact – There are four teams from Region 1 present, but none of them is Lowndes, the program that has won five of the past Region 1 titles, not to mention three state championships in that time.

If that’s not enough to motivate the Vikings, consider this next slight.

The Maxwell Computer Ratings not only don’t consider Lowndes in Region 1’s top four, but they don’t consider Lowndes the best  ‘’fifth-place’’ team in AAAAAA. (Reminds me of that ESPN commercial when Charlie Steiner ranked Evander Holyfield  the 50th best heavyweight – in Georgia.)

Which of these teams will NOT make the playoffs?

Maxwell thinks Collins Hill is better. In Maxwell’s defense, you can’t blame the teacher for taking off points for losing to Newton, which lost to Eastside, which lost to Alcovy. (If we were really trying to help fire up Lowndes, we’d rank them No. 4 – in Newton County.)

77.94 – Collins Hill (7)

71.97 – Lowndes (1)

70.18 – South Gwinnett (8)

61.41 – Wheeler (5)

59.57 – Harrison (4)

56.47 – Douglas County (3)

56.28 – Lambert (6)

48.34 – Luella (2)

No matter how it plays out, there are going to be some prominent teams that don’t make the playoffs in Class AAAAAAA.  Let’s take Collins Hill. The Eagles are 3-0. Remember that they beat Peachtree Ridge 41-10 last season, and P’Ridge comes to Collins Hill this season. So we might be getting ahead of ourselves to think that North Gwinnett, Mill Creek, Peachtree Ridge and Norcross are shoo-ins for the playoffs.

Now look at Region 8. Parkview and Brookwood are 0-3 overall, 0-1 in the region. Parkview faces Archer (3-0) this week. Parkview was 0-3 in 1998 but hasn’t been 0-4 since 1986. Brookwood plays Parkview next week.

It’s going to be interesting in November to find out which teams we thought were going to be in the playoffs, that aren’t.

Charlie, come on out and get your whoopin’

Can’t see Lowndes not making the playoffs. We have a nasty habit of losing to teams we should beat. But we have the potential to do quite well against really good teams. I honestly think we will defeat Valdosta AND Colquitt this year on our home turf.

As much as I dislike Lowndes. I mean REALLY dislike Lowndes. I feel like they will get a dance ticket. I’m just worried about my bunch of poor, tiny, little undersized and now…crippled…Hawgs. Gonna be musical chairs in region 1.

Coffee is the Wildcard in Region 1. One of the traditional playoff teams might not make it because Coffee will stun a couple of teams…. :-)

When I saw Colquitt in the dome, I realized there are a lot of adjectives one can use to describe them. But tiny and undersized, are NOT two of them. Losing one DT with a broken leg did not down size the team. Colquitt has some BIG guys! Rufus S Demann reminds me of how Bazemore described his Cats EVERY year.

Points allowed in region games this year will be a very much watched stat in 1-AAAAAA as this is what we use to break end of season ties. Points allowed to region playoff teams. This may very well decide 3rd and/or 4th place teams.

At Maxpreps ,
AAAAAA
#63) Habersham Central
#62) Johns Creek
#61) Brookwood
#60) Central Gwinnett
#59) Centennial
#58) Meadowcreek
#57) Parkview
#56) Mountain View
#55) Duluth
#49) Grayson
#47) Dacula
#46) South Gwinnett
#44) Norcross

Seems to me these spots were occupied by regions 2 and 3 last year at this point in the season.
I know the AJC Poll is our standard but these guy’s have no dog in the race. Totally unbiased.

And Regions 2 and 3 are the weakest in AAAAAA. Or are they?

@Sportsnut– Really, this list comes from Maxpreps “Standings”. It just takes into consideration each teams record. The fact that Regions 7 & 8 have already started Region play means that 4 of the 9 teams in each of those regions have at least one region loss. Most other regions have not started their region play and therefore can line up their non region games as they see fit. That same list has Lovejoy at #20. Now if you want to look at the MaxPreps Rankings, they have 5 Region 7 teams listed in the top 14 of AAAAAA. The rankings not only look at record but who you have played.

Didn’t Collins Hill and Lowndes play each other in the last few years?

Sportsnut: yes they really are.

I think Lowndes will be in the playoffs.

Brookwood, maybe not in this year.

@ Flyer == I am only putting info out there. These are things that I have noticed people use to critique. I am trying to show how perception rules. Last season, these spots were occupied by regions 2 and 3 and now they are not. Are we to see this as improvement? Or, are we looking at a shift in the landscape?

There was no intent to say anything other than what it does say. I know these are the “standings” and what they indicate.

In reference to there being 5 region 7 teams in the top 14, be honest with yourself and tell me all 5 belong. All the same guidelines or intangibles exist for them as everyone else. Whom has Collins Hill played? Mill Creek also. We all have seen Norcross. Peachtree Ridge, I saw for myself. It is not all that.

@ Grayram == Maybe they are but the out of region games say they are improved over last season. This all that I am trying to say. Are we to accept that Norcross, Brookwood, Parkview, Grayson and other upper echelon teams may be a little down but not accept that the lower tier may be a bit better?

Sportsnut

I’ll tell you who they played.
Peachtree Ridge == Duluth, Parkview, Walton
Mill Creek == Mountain View, Brookwood, Dacula
Collins Hill == Habersham Central, Central Gwinnett, Dacula
That’s 3 of your 5 in the top 14. North Gwinnett belongs where they are.
Norcross and Grayson still could be dangerous and that is purely based on history, not up to date data.

So you think all those wins against teams in a lower classification are just a taste of things to come for Region 2? Well, Regions 2 and 3 are guaranteed to have 8 teams in the playoffs. Sportsnut, how many victories do you think those teams will have in the first round? 6? 7?

I sure hope Rockdale County has room in the trophy case for the State Champion trophy. I know a bunch of them, and I really like those guys. It is probably never too early to get on the Rockdale County bandwagon, especially since Sportsnut says they are in such a strong region.

You better believe everybody will be downloading the Region 2 games on HUDL.

@ SuwaneeOwns == I have no preconceived notion as to how many wins the regions will have in the playoffs. I can wish for the same for Habersham Central or maybe Mountain View, in terms of clearing case space. There are 9 winless teams in 6, 7 and 8. Those constitute all the winless in the class. Last season, that was regions 2 and 3.

The second season is coming and then this will all be sorted out. Make no mistake, this is not 2012.

Die hard Camden fan, but really concerned Camden might not make it, just because they are young at so many positions and don’t seem to be able to dominate line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, linebackers seem a little soft compared to past years, not concerned about coaching so much, just a young team. The future does look bright especially the 10th grade bunch !!!

Lets not forget Lowndes lost to a team that only lost one of its region games last year, in region 2-6A. And now everyone has written us off, we’ve dropped on the polls, and now Todd is saying we won’t make the playoffs. Makes one think about why someone gets a 1099 instead of a W-2.

I don’t expect the Broncos to have a winning record this season. Somehow the Broncos, while sometimes mediocre on offense, have lost the ability to play defense. Very puzzling whether or not that’s coaching or personnel. Used to be one could run around the Broncos, but never over them. That’s no longer true. If Parkview emerges victorious this weekend against the Broncos, then expect Dacula to beat the Broncos as well. That’s a 0-5. I’m thinking 3-7 from this bunch, though I’ll gladly eat those words and be wrong.

@squirrell= I think the O will be on point. Most of our injuries are on the defensive side and besides Mr. Pittman everyone else should be healthy and ready for the Vikings. The goal at the end of last year was to win the region and play some playoff games at home. That’s the focus this year and it starts with Lowndes. (The Woodchoppers Coming) Go Pack!!

@ Grayram == Improving with a lot of young talent. I wish them well. There is no guarantee Lovejoy will win the region and that is a good thing for the region. It would indicate that some are much stronger. It also is an admittance that Lovejoy is not as strong as they were.

We are now in the same boat as many other regions, not knowing who will be the 1 seed.

Lowndes to many to count…….Probst just 1. Lowndes owns Probst. Every year except 1 and oh how it eats at good ole Rush’s craw. The region championship will be decided in just 2 weeks at Martin Stadium. The winner finishes #1.

We can guess, forecast, prognosticate, predict, or whatever, but until we play a region game or two, or maybe six, Region 1 folks have no real idea who will be #1, #2, #3, #4, or #5 when the dust settles. We fans hope our team will be in there at #4 or better, but there are just too many potentially good teams in our region.

One thing I sure do enjoy about 1-AAAAAA is how well they travel, and how many they bring when they do travel. Wasn’t all that long ago that Lowndes came to South Gwinnett, a game I caught early in a season. Just bringing their band required a caravan of buses that suggested a military operation was nearby. Many were staying overnight in accommodations that were somehow reasonable and affordable, but for THAT many people, that’s alot of bucks and commitment. Say what you will about who has better football teams, but Gwinnettians don’t often take the flock along nearly as well as those from the south. Of course, at least Gwinnettians make the trip (Broncos split with Valdosta not that long ago). Can’t remember Cobb or Dekalb making any of those trips, except in playoffs.

Anybody but me notice Max Preps, a rating org. that Todd seems to put a lot of faith in, does not even rate Lovejoy in its Top Ten this week? And, the Georgia Sportswriters Assn list Lowndes at 8.5 whilr leaving Coffee unranked. Score Atlanta does not have Camden in their Top Ten,

Just goes to show a lot of “sports writers” drink too much Peachtree Ridge Koolaid, as eaglenationrising calls it!

I have been a Valdosta Wildcat fan for over 50 years now and hope they continue to have a good year. However, most of the schools they play are so much larger now. Some of the metro schools are twice the size of Valdosta. As a result, they have so many huge players. I hope this problem is addressed by the Association.

@A VikingFan == I have noticed. These are northside people. They live in these areas and are for their favorites. Never mind what is taking place on the field. If a team wins games against softer competition, it looks good to them.

@ A Viknig Fan == Gotcha on the Kool-Aid. Yeah, we beat them last season in the scrimmage and did the same this year. Great campus, lovely school, nice people.
I know a scrimmage is just that but considering they have us tied for 5th with the Ridge in the latest composite ranking, the scrimmage was not indicative of who they think Peachtree Ridge is. The first 3 quarters, there was live action, except the kicking game. The varsity played to 43-21 Lovejoy advantage and then the JV took over for the 4th qtr. The scoring did not keep up with the varsity but the Wildcat young ones closed it out 14-0.

@ 74 == I grew up thinking Clayton County was metro Atlanta only to find out differently by being associated with the football program. No matter our class, we never played metro schools in the first round. Always central to south Georgia teams. I understand we are the closest AAAAAA school to region 1 but to get left out of the metro “scene” made no sense.

I don’t see how anyone can predict region 1. Too much parity in talent and coaching at Coffee, Colquitt, Lowndes, Tift and Valdosta. It amazes me to hear everyone talking of the youth in their programs. Same at Coffee. The Trojans are traveling 47 Freshmen and Sophomores and 9 are starting this year.

A lot of football to go. we begin region play next week and it will become a bit clearer who will have the 4 playoff spots. kind of strange, to have ONLY 4 teams south of Atlanta to be in a bracket of 32 though. Colquitt, Lowndes, will earn a spot and then it is a tossup with Valdosta, Camden, and Coffee. Brunswick, and Tifton has some work to do..
