Jay Moxey provided Kell with the hot start and the strong finish and did a lot of the dirty work in between, leading the Longhorns to a 35-20 victory against east Cobb rival Lassiter at home on Friday.
Moxey’s interception and 21-yard return of a Will Anderson pass on the third play of the game set Kell up on the 19-yard line and led to a 40-yard field goal by Cameron Massung with 9:25 to play in the first quarter that gave the Longhorns a 3-0 lead they never relinquished.
Moxey’s second interception stopped Lassiter’s final drive at the Kell 15-yard line with 27 seconds remaining in the game.
The 5-foot-7, 165-pound senior also scored two of the Longhorns’ four touchdowns. His 1-yard run on the fourth play of the second quarter gave Kell a 13-3 lead, and his 17-yard scoring run with 1:41 to play provided the final score of the night and essentially put the game away.
Lassiter trailed 28-10 entering the fourth quarter and eventually cut the lead to 28-20, but the Trojans’ final two drives ended with a punt and an interception.
Moxey rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries for Kell, which finished with a 303-302 advantage in total offense. Kell quarterback Matthew McGuigan completed 20 of 32 passes for 197 yards.
Kell (3-0), the fifth-ranked team in Class AAAAA, picked up its third consecutive victory against a AAAAAA team. The Longhorns opened the season by beating Chattahoochee 26-16 in the Corky Kell Classic and Woodstock 41-21 last week. Lassiter, which fell to 1-2, will begin play in Region 5-AAAAAA next week at home against Cherokee.
Kell took advantage of good field position on its first three possessions to take a 13-3 lead, and then drove 89 yards late in the first half for a touchdown before settling for a 20-10 halftime lead.
After Moxey’s first interception set up a field goal, Kell got the ball at its 48 after forcing a Lassiter punt. The Longhorns drove to the Lassiter 12, where they got a 29-yard field goal by Massung to make it 6-0.
After Lassiter’s Luke Hardin kicked a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead to 6-3, Kell’s Julian Burris returned the kickoff 42 yards to the Lassiter 48, setting up an eight-play drive that was capped by Moxey’s 1-yard touchdown run.
