‘Average’ start for No. 1 Sandy Creek; 2 teams looking for first wins, points

By David Purdum / For the AJC

It’s been four years and 40 games since Sandy Creek lost a regular-season game.

The Patriots fell 28-27 in double overtime at East Coweta to open the 2009 season.

Sandy Creek heads to East Coweta on Friday, looking to put together its best performance of season. Patriots coach Chip Walker gives his team a “C” grade, after their first two games. Turnovers on offense and surrendering big plays on defense have hindered Sandy Creek, Walker said.

“We’ve got to cut out some early-season mistakes,” said Walker, who will be looking for his 90th win career win. “We need to start clicking altogether.”

After the 2009 loss at East Coweta, Sandy Creek won its next 39 regular-season games, before opening this season with a 27-27 tie against Florida power Plant High School. The Patriots rebounded to hammer Newnan. Walker says recruiters from Georgia, Auburn and Georgia State were in the stands for the Newnan game.

Clash of the Titans: Two perennial powers collide Friday, when No. 2 Carrollton hosts AA’s top-ranked team, Calhoun. Both teams are undefeated and have combined to win nine state titles and 46 region championships. Carrollton coach Rayvan Teague is 209-67-1 in his career. Calhoun coach Hal Lamb is 164-44.

Offense wanted: Two Region 6 teams are looking for their first wins and first points of the season. South Atlanta has opened with consecutive shutout losses to Lithonia (36-0) and Towers (44-0). The Hornets will try to get going against Maynard Jackson at Grady Stadium. Redan, after falling 46-0 to Troup and 56-0 to Shiloh, will try to make progress against Cedar Grove at Hallford Stadium.

Big test: No. 3 Burke County faces its biggest test so far, when the Bears host Coffee of AAAAA. Burke County hasn’t given up a point this season, but has played only one official game, a 55-0 blowout of Hephzibah. Coffee is 2-0 with convincing wins over Whitewater and Ware County.

Final score: Northside-WR 28, Westside, Macon 14 — Westside QB DaQavious Walker passed for 315 yards rushed for 87 yards. Northside is No. 3 in AAAAA. Westside is No. 9 in AAAA.

Does anyone know if the game between NSWR and Westside Macon will be broadcast in any form and if so, where and when?

Go Trojans-hard to pick on this one-too many unanswered questions;mainly is Calhouns’ defense that much improved over last year or has the competiton been weak in the first 2 games? The other question is is Carrolltons’ offense as strong as it appears? It’s too early in the season to tell I guess-Chapel Hill was no measure. As I said before if the Trojans fail in this one the playoffs want last long.

Expect a close game in Sharpsburg on Friday night. I have been to 5 out of sandy creek last 9 games and this team defense is very suspect. The offense is still really good but you win rings with defense

Drock13 the Sandy Creek defense has been hurt by injuries. Missing a starting LB and the best D linemen are playing hurt. The secondary is slowly coming along, but they are still blowing assignments. That stated, I don’t see the game being very close because the offense is clicking now and Gainesville proved that offense can win rings last year. 41-14 Creek

I was listening to the NSWR game last night and it sounded like the kid was something special. The game was broadcast and announced by NSWR but they, the commentators could not stop talking about him. Westside has a good one in him.

Does anyone know what class he is in? I don’t recall.

Sportsnut: The problem NSWR had was defending an athletic QB’s that threw 75% of the time. The more heralded one is Walker but both are tall and lanky. Any team with Walker will be dangerous. I thought their QB from last year was one of the best I had seen in years but this guy-WOW! I believe both are Sophs.
