After a slow start, Langston Hughes found its offensive will and dominated visiting Luella to win its home opener 35-0 Friday night in Fairburn.
Senior running back Keion Davis scored five total touchdowns — three rushing scores in the second quarter and a fourth on special teams before most fans at Panther Stadium were seated. He streaked through a haze left from the pre-game ceremony for a 95-yard kickoff return to put his team ahead just 13 seconds in.
For his fifth score, Davis took a swing pass from quarterback Kinan Humphrey in from 25 yards out midway through the third quarter. By the Panthers’ final possession of the third quarter, Davis was watching from the sidelines.
Going back to the season opener against Creekside, the Marshall commitment has scored all of Hughes’ seven touchdowns so far this season.
“Davis has a lot of special traits,” Hughes head coach Willie Cannon said. “He has to understand that he needs to be patient. We are going to rely on him, and he’s been performing for us over the last couple weeks.”
Both teams struggled early to advance the ball, and Hughes threatened early in the second quarter behind 40 rushing yards from Davis, moving to the Luella 20 before Emile Sexton lost a fumble at the 15-yard line.
Luella stalled, and a two-yard punt gave Hughes the ball at the Lions 12. Davis scored on the first play, and on the next possession, Luella quarterback Donaldd Hammond threw an interception on a second-down pass that was returned to the Lions 23 by Chance Turner. From there Davis scored again on Hughes’ first offensive play.
His fourth touchdown overall came on a 1-yard plunge with 19 seconds to play before halftime. Hughes drove 77 yards in three minutes before Davis scored on the eighth play.
Luella managed just 76 yards of offense through three quarters before both teams fielded reserves and played with a running clock in the fourth.
Next week Hughes (1-1) will attempt to avenge its lone regular-season loss from last year when the Panthers host Wheeler.
