Five things to watch this weekend: Colquitt-Lovejoy is headliner

Five things to watch in Class AAAAAA this weekend –

Who will win the Colquitt County-Lovejoy game?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...
- No. 2 Lovejoy plays at No. 4 Colquitt County in the headliner. Colquitt won last year’s game 14-7 after a scoreless first half. Both went on to make the semifinals or better, each losing to Norcross.  Lovejoy sat three defensive starters because of injuries last week in a 41-12 victory over Mundy’s Mill. They were LB DeMarquis Gates, NT Chris Ellis and LB Randy Anyanwu. Gates, a preseason all-state player who is committed to Ole Miss, would be the most sorely missed this week.

- Norcross’ opening game was a disastrous 55-0 loss to Miami’s Booker T. Washington. Now, the defending state champions travel to Parkview, which should provide a pretty good measure of whether Norcross has fallen a couple of notches, or just had a bad night. Parkview was a quarterfinal team last season that lost 28-14 last week to Peachtree Ridge. Both teams are breaking in new quarterbacks and should improve quickly as those players develop.

- Valdosta’s low point a year ago was losing to Brooks County, a Class AA powerhouse. The two play again Friday in Valdosta. Brooks County won 28-24 last year on a touchdown with 2:40 left and then a goal-line stand, when Valdosta threw incomplete four straight times. This season, Valdosta is more apt to run the ball Nelson Herring and Malcolm Joseph. Herring rushed for 227 yards on eight carries in a 28-24 victory over Thomas County Central last week.

- No. 8 Mill Creek is at home against Brookwood. In 2012, these Gwinnett County schools played twice, with Brookwood winning 31-21 in the regular season and Mill Creek winning 56-21 in the playoffs to reach the quarterfinals. Mill Creek  beat Dacula 41-28 in its opener. Brookwood lost to McEachern 31-10. Note that Mill Creek is the fourth of four Region 8 teams in the Top 10. There are no Top 10 teams from Brookwood’s Region 8.

- Four-year-old Archer in Region 8 and East Coweta in Region 3 might be sleeper picks to win their regions. They play Friday at Archer, the team that lost close ones to Brookwood (20-19) and Parkview (20-18) last season and collapsed down the stretch against South Gwinnett (42-14) and Grayson (48-0). Last week, junior QB Gabe Tiller had three TD passes in the 37-0 victory over Mountain View. It was 30-0 at halftime. Meanwhile, East Coweta had 376 rushing yards in a 49-8 victory over Henry County.

Overall, not a lot of outstanding games in AAAAAA. In case you missed it, here are the projected margins of victory for AAAAAA games from the Maxwell Ratings –

Alpharetta vs. Harrison -4

Archer vs. East Coweta -5

Berkmar at Meadowcreek -35

Camden Co. vs. Johnson, Sav. -41

Campbell at Osborne -14

Collins Hill vs. Dacula -13

Colquitt Co. vs. Lovejoy -5

Etowah vs. Centennial -17

Hancock Central at East Laurens -5

Hughes vs. Luella -15

Kell at Woodstock -14

Lassiter vs. Sprayberry -34

Lowndes vs. Newton -33

Mill Creek vs. Brookwood -5

Milton at Johns Creek -14

Morrow vs. Forest Park -3

Norcross at Parkview -20

North Forsyth vs. Dawson Co. -13

Pebblebrook vs. Mountain View -17

Roswell vs. Lambert -9

Sandy Creek vs. Newnan -20

Shiloh vs. Redan -18

South Cobb vs. Douglas Co. -10

South Forsyth at Forsyth Central -18

South Gwinnett vs. Duluth -28

Tift Co. vs. Houston Co. -9

Tri-Cities vs. Banneker -8

Valdosta vs. Brooks Co. -10

I understand Colquitt’s coach is experimenting with Pittman and others from the D-line on the offensive line. This may be a good idea. They will need more than the 212 lbs. per man they have starting. I’m sure the Colquitt coach’s that were at the Lovejoy game vs MM made this suggestion.

Why would they call for such a thing? Why would a coach consider this? There has to be a reason. This is the time for me to say, just as always, Lovejoy is coming to play ball. I have had an opportunity to see all the major hitters in AAAAAA and Lovejoy is close again. I’m not talking about playoff’s. I think they have a chance to win it all.

Here are a few names to listen for: Quintarius Neely or “Mays”, given to him because that is where he was. He came to Lovejoy just as Kirkland did. He is from the neighborhood. Played middle school ball at Mundy’s Mill. He is 5′11, 180lbs and is gifted.

Derico Tilley: Running back with speed to spare. He came from our one little park league. Secondary beware.

You already know about Kirkland. He just runs.
Preston Williams, WR: 6′5 200 with good hands and speed. Has been waiting his turn.
Treveyion Custis: 6′2, 195 Db
Montrell Custis: 6′1, 200 Db
DeMarquis Gates: 6′2, 225 Lb
Randy Anyanwu: 6′3, 235 Lb
Kris Ellis: 5′10 220 NG……Remember # 40, Norwood? Same thing.
The Offensive Line as a whole. Just watch them go. They will wear teams down.

Have fun this season!

If I was a betting man, I’d bet CC easily covers the spread this week and Mobley will have a “break out” game! Perhaps the Packers could more appropriately be called the “Gins” and Mobley the Master “Gin Operator” like his famous family. Be it cotton gins, peanut gins, or Colquitt gins, Lovejoy will be the Packer’s “love joys” and diced to hog food and fish chum!

(So far this fall, Lowndes has been critiqued and criticized from Holcomb to Gwinnett for playing such an “easy” early season schedule. FOR SCHEDULING two teams from Lovejoy(s) region and, except for CC, the kind of teams Lovejoy plays every week.)

Rushed Props won’t let the Gins lose 2 in a row, especially to a team from southeast Hotlanta.

Another thing for certain, Valdosta won’t lose to Brooks 2 years in a row.

Lovejoy has a real good to beat Colquitt. That is, if they travel down to Moultrie in un-air conditioned busses.

@ 1-6A SO == First and foremost, we are Lovejoy. We live in Lovejoy. The school is in Lovejoy. There is nothing about Lovejoy that is Atlanta. I will attempt to go word for word with you, for a minute. If you were a betting man, you would lose the house. Mobley having a breakout game or getting broken. Name game: With “Love” and “Joy”, we bring to you the truth. Schedule strength, it varies according to what the coach thinks of his team. He will schedule non-region games accordingly. Consider this, those teams from Lovejoy’s region play schools like Lowndes, teams that are better by admission, to prepare them for region play. Does this sound familiar?

Propst is movin those guys to OL bc of the pressure on the QB the first two games, not bc what he’s seen from Lovejoy. It’s happened the last two games and he don’t want it to happen again. Does he know Lovejoy is talented and will bring pressure, yes. But these moves aren’t bc I something he saw from Lovejoy

One would think the Colquitt County “Woodchoppers” would be smarting after staying at #1 only for one week. Thought that was the worst excuse I had ever heard from Propst as to why they lost to Hoover. Maybe they did travel to Birmingham on non-air conditioned buses, but THEY WENT THE DAY BEFORE! What does he have, first graders? He basically “threw his players UNDER the bus”!

We just want a fair game unlike the two touchdowns we had taken away last year, and the 30 yrd penalties, that put CC on the 5 yard line. Every run over 10 yrds taken away because of penalties.I really would like the state to provide referees not from CC or Atlanta.

Sportsnut is delusional. Lovejoy does not have a single skill player that has proven anything at the varsity level and to say that they have a bunch of people to easily replace that team from last year discredits last year’s great team. I am sure they have talent, but this week will show what they are actually made of. I would like to watch Coach Propst and those Lovejoy officials. Worst officials in the state. There is still talk about the 15 penalties that were called on Alpharetta in the first half of a close game last year. I give Propst 2 quarters before his head completely explodes from the home job he has coming from those guys. Its still the best game of the week so maybe they hired a better association this year and they actually let the players decide the game.

Looking forward to a good game tommorow between Lovejoy and Colquitt. And Sportsnut Propst probably made the decision to get help on the offensive line after the qb came to the sideline with a bloody nose or the time he came off the field with his helmet knocked off walkin sideways last week against Hoover.

@ Alphadawg == We will be playing in Moultrie. I thought the officials were hired by the school board. They will not be from Clayton County.

@ WildHawg2012 == Thanks for the travel well wish’s.

@ Alphadawg == I don’t think it was 15. ANYWAY, you have to play though that. We faced the officials last season in Moultrie and just as Lovejoy Forever stated above, we were taken for a ride. We do not claim to have replaced all that talent with equal talent, just replaced it.
Shouldn’t it be Alphahawg?

Sportsnut and other lovejoy fans actually think Rush has his own officials. its quite comical. Bottom line is they had some unsportsmanlike penalties bc of late hits and celebration calls. Sportsnut, i cant remember but did colquitt have a TD called back last year too?

Maybe we’ll get a good shower around 5-6pm and cool it off!
Should be one of the best games of the year with two of the best teams!
My biggest fear is not the OL but having 2 DBs out!
Whatever happens, we’ll be watchen two Final Four Teams!
Have as safe trip Lovejoy!
We’ll be waiting with a little 100 Year HawgPen Anniversary WELCOME!

@ Colquitt Fan == We are not idiots, We know they are not his but you do get special treatment at home. It is funny how those same actions were not considered penalties anywhere but Moultrie. They did have one called back but it was a clear holding call.

Late hits and unsportsmanlike penalties were the result of bad officiating. We lost though and that is final. That was last year and this is now.

See you Friday.

Gwinnettdad…here is what i have to say. All you guys need to get off lowndes for our schedule. In 2010 we opened up with a good south gwinnett team..then went to mceachern and were cheated off the field then we played burke county and ware. In 2011 we played mceachern, burke and ware. (burke won it all in 2011) ware was beat by lovejoy 14-0..same year lovejoy lost to tucker in the dome. We beat ware 35-17 that year.

It wasnt long ago that we had a tough non region schedule. You guy need to get off of us…its not easy finding teams that want to drive to lowndes county to start the year. I would like to see us go to the corkey kell or play a better team also, but it is what it is.

we are going to open with plant high next year from what i hear

@sportsnut just a little background on Derico Tilley. This you man has been a wonder to watch since little league. He played at Lovejoy middle school in the 7th and Eddie White Acadamy in 8th grade where he lead the county in touchdowns with 27 in one season. In 9th grade in a game against Alvocy they call a game because they had to air left a linebacker out of the stadium after he tried a one on one hit on Mr. Tilley. Running back is a hard job at Lovejoy and when you have to run behind the likes of Travis Custis your chances was slim an none. But now it’s Mr. Tilley’s time. How do you touch the untouchable? Lol…..

Lowndes is just sitting idly by waiting their turn. It will come soon enough. Regarding schedule we are just learning from our region brethren Camden that an easy schedule (their old region) is not such a bad thing after all. Seems it used to work for them. Every body hated them for it but the have the trophies and the haters don’t.

@ Lovejoy#1 == I know some about Rico. I know his rec league coach. It will be great watching him and all the backs. We have some good backs. When you run behind that line, there are holes and all you need to do is hit it.

Lovejoy is in good hands for a few years to come.

Man from what I’m reading on here, we better quit. Travis register played both ways last year. Lowndes has always had players going both ways. Camden Co same thing. I don’t like it but lets play!!! I got a feeling somebody is going to step up and shine a little bit on that defensive front. Also IF we got the lead I think we will keep our same OL and rest Parrish & Pittman for Defense. More worried about defensive back field. I’m sure Lovejoy noticed Hoover didn’t score a TD until after they got knocked out of game. Also we had one of our DE not come back for the second half. Dehydrated.

Sportsnut: When you complain about Rush’s sideline antics, what he is doing is getting the refs in is pocket. Its called coaching.

BK: Lowndes has trouble getting teams to come to Valdosta? Moultrie dont have these troubles. Heck we had no problem getting a team from misissippi come. Lovejoy will have done it twice this year. Its all about money and I know MOultrie doesnt spend more than Lowndes

@ 74 == You know us. We are coming. We have replaced those 16 starters and are ready to play. Lovejoy is going to play Lovejoy football and we all know what that is like. Colquitt will be hard pressed Friday. It will take everything they have and then some.

@ PackGATA == We are not Hoover.

@ Colquitt Fan == What I am doing is not complaining. I just talk about it. He does go across the line at times but I don’t really care unless it influences the outcome of the game. The coach will not throw a pass, catch a pass, run one down or try a single field goal. Coaching is one thing but intimidation is another and that is what I think your coach does.

No matter.

@bk= man with the injuries that are mounting for us we might need to schedule at least 2 cupcakes next year. I am for real dude, I mean before the season started someone said by the time region play comes we would be worn out and banged up and at this point that might be true. I am not going to harp on that cause when Friday comes its time to strap up anyway no matter what and just to be clear I still expect to win our region but it will be tough as expected. Go Pack!!!

WildHawg2012…….Exactly the reason I predicted a 3-4 loss season for Colquitt. It would be a miracle to play a schedule like Colquitt’s and not have injuries. Not just physical bumps and bruises either, there will be a mental and emotional toll also. It’s tough to get HS kids, mentally, physically and emotionally ready each week. You have to give the kids a break at least one or two weeks during the season. But, maybe I’m wrong, Colquitt just might have the players and coaching staff to pull it off! RELEASE the………You know the rest! :-)

@ WildHawg2012 == I think I forgot to mention his position. Neely, the transfer from Mays, will be the starter. He brings much to the table and he is only a sophomore. This team is different. They are young. We have only 22 seniors. The main thing is, they play ball. They play Lovejoy football.

Neely led his Mays JV team last season to an 8-0 record.
