AA blog: Here’s what to look for Friday
Already, we’re in Week 3 of the season. While the season is still young, it seems like the 2013 previews and all the hype that comes along with opening kickoff was just moments ago.
Here’s what to look for this week:
- The No. 1-ranked Calhoun Yellow Jackets will host one of their classic north Georgia rivals, the unranked Dalton Catamounts of AAAA. The Jackets are coming off a 37-0 win over the Ridgeland Panthers, who at the time were No. 4 in AAAA. The Catamounts lost to Ringgold, 33-27, and are looking to avoid an 0-2 start for the second time in three seasons. The Jackets have won the last four contests and will look for a convincing win to put a stronghold on their No. 1 ranking. There’s a slight chance they could meet resistance from the Catamounts, who are aiming for consecutive winning seasons.
- The Brooks County Trojans, ranked No. 5, will travel to AAAAAA’s Valdosta Wildcats to face their rival on the other side of I-75. The Trojans eked out a 28-24 win against the Wildcats last year and seek their second win in the series, which Valdosta owns, 6-1. Brooks County (2-0) is coming off an impressive 48-14 win over the Monroe Tornadoes, who were ranked No. 10 in AAAA at the time. Valdosta beat Thomas County Central, 28-24, in its season opener and is coming off a bye week.
- Other top 10 matchups to watch: No. 3 Jefferson (1-0) travels to Jackson County (0-1); No. 4 Greater Atlanta Christian hosts Apalachee (0-1); No. 7 Vidalia (1-0), coming off a bye, travels to McIntosh County Academy (0-1); No. 8 Fitzgerald – also coming off a bye – visits Irwin County (1-0); No. 9 Washington-Wilkes (1-0) visits Lincoln County (1-0), ranked No. 3 in AAA; No. 10 Benedictine (1-0) travels to Long County (1-0).
