Week 2 is in the books. While it’s early in the season, the first few weeks still create plenty of intrigue, as most programs haven’t started playing the region schedule, meaning there’s matchups across classifications and even states. The weeks leading up to the region schedule is a chance to see how programs from respective classifications stack up. In AA, the teams stack up quite well: the classification finished Week 2 with a 31-21 record.
Of the 52 games involving AA schools, only two featured inter-AA games. Jeff Davis and Atkinson County have already kicked off the 2-AA schedule, with Jeff Davis winning 18-0. The other game featured 4-AA’s Putnam County and 8-AA’s Greene County, with Putnam County winning 28-6.
Region 1-AA posted the best record with its teams going 5-1. Highlights include No. 4 Brooks County winning 48-14 over Monroe and Thomasville’s 21-10 upset over AAAA’s No. 6 Cairo. Region 2-AA went 5-2 and 4-AA went 5-3.
AA was also on the winning side of a number of blowouts led by Bowdon’s 69-20 win over Woodland of Alabama. Other winning AA teams scoring 50 points or more were Washington-Wilkes (58), Westside (55) and Manchester (54).
Only one region, 6-AA, posted a losing record, going 2-3. However, GAC ran to a 41-6 win over Savannah and Lovett is already 2-0 with a second straight win over an AAA school, the most recent 14-3 over Blessed Trinity.
Only one AA top 10 team lost — Early County fell 14-13 to Seminole County in game that was schedule to be played Friday, but that weather postponed until Saturday. Early County, of 1-AA, was ranked No. 9 but has fallen out of the top 10 and replaced by the Washington-Wilkes Tigers, who moved up a spot. Benedictine of 2-AA earned its way into the top 10 with a 41-7 win over Effingham County.
