Nick Chubb: Another monster night

Is Nick Chubb slipping? After rushing for 363 yards in three quarters against Rockmart last season, the Cedartown senior back managed “only” 331 yards and five touchdowns in Friday’s 40-14 win over Rockmart. He averaged 13.2 yards per carry.

Chubb had five 330-plus-yard rushing performances last season and finished with 2,721 yards, the seventh best single-season mark in Georgia high school history.

Chubb has committed to Georgia.

Congrats: The Howard Huskies ended their 24-game losing streak with a 20-14 victory over East Laurens in new coach Barney Hester’s debut. With the win, Hester moved into a tie with Luther Welsh for fifth on Georgia high school’s all-time coaching win list.

Curfew violation: Defending state champ and top-ranked Sandy Creek had its 39-game regular-season win streak snapped – with a tie. The Patriots’ game against Florida power Plant High School on Thursday was stopped with 1:27 left in the fourth quarter and the scored tied, 27-27, due to school-night curfew rules.

Team effort: No. 2 Carrollton got touchdowns from five players—Will Garrett, Malik Sheppard, Andrew Turner, Trey Chivers and Jarvis Terrell—in a 35-14 win over Oxford (Ala.).

Category 7: Monroe Area quarterback Stanton Truitt had a hand in all seven of the Hurricanes’ touchdowns in a 48-21 win over Loganville. Truitt rushed for four touchdowns and passed for three more.

Notes: Cairo saw its eight-game winning streak over Thomasville end with a 21-10 loss to the Bulldogs. …  Americus-Sumpter fell to Kendrick, 14-8, in double overtime in coach Reggie Mitchell’s debut.  … Mary Persons rushed for 356 yards in a 31-9 win over Jackson. … Ridgeland, last year’s state runner-up, lost 37-0 to Calhoun. It’s the first time the Panthers have been shut out since 2006.

Barney Hester is one of the cooler stories of this season. Big news when he left Tattnall Square and GISA, where he’d won 11 state titles, to take a job at public school Howard. And he’s 1-0 – ending a 24-game losing streak. Pretty neat.

Hey Todd, I take two things from your post concerning Coach Hester. First, he is dedicated. Second , he knows what he is doing. Those are the type people that you would not mind being in charge of your child. Hat’s off to him.

Did Grady — the team that supposedly is going to rule Region 6-4A — lose to Decatur and only score 6 points?
