Colquitt County 21, Grayson 6

Michael Sutton set the tone with an interception return for a touchdown in the game’s first series, jumpstarting Colquitt County’s 21-6 win over Grayson, on Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
Sutton had two interceptions, and Sihiem King rushed for a 122 yards and a score for the Packers, who jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but were never able to pull away from the Rams.
.
Sutton intercepted Grayson quarterback Hunter Schuessler’s first pass and raced 28 yards for the touchdown to the Packers up 7-0, 35 seconds into the game. Colquitt quarterback Daniel Mobley found Kiel Pollard for a 2-yard touchdown pass later in the first quarter.
The Packers took a 14-0 lead into halftime. It felt like a lot wider margin. Five penalties, include multiple personal fouls, irritated coach Rush Propst and kept the Packers from extending their lead in the first half.
“They’re Grayson, a talented football team and proven program,” said Propst. “We knew they weren’t going to go away easy.”
Sutton’s second interception led to a 2-yard touchdown run by King that put the Packers up 21-0 midway through the third quarter.
The Packers’ offense pushed the pace, going without a huddle and snapping the ball as quickly as the referees would let them. Mobley was solid, completing 14 of 27 passes for 173 yards and the touchdown to Pollard. Mobley also threw two interceptions, though, which allowed Grayson to stay within striking distance.
“Our defense played great, but we gave the game away with mistakes,” said Grayson coach Mickey Conn, who has just one returning starter back. “I’m happy the way we competed to the very end. We just hurt ourselves with the turnovers and mistakes.”
A.J. Stinson’s 7-yard touchdown run accounted for Grayson’s score.
Colquitt County has been eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual state champion the past four seasons, including a 35-31 loss to Grayson in the 2011 state semifinals. Propst said this year’s team has state-championship potential, but must contend with a brutal early schedule that includes next week’s trip to Alabama to face Propst’s former program, Hoover. Propst won five state titles at Hoover, before coming over Colquitt County.
“I’m not going to lie – that game means a lot to me,” said Propst. “But I just really want our kids to put on a good showing in front of a national TV audience, against one of the best programs in the nation.”

Great game Colquitt Co.!! Let’s see how Lowndes stacks up to the 2013 Colquitt Co. squad at the palace. I must admit, ya’ll looked pretty good out there today. And fast too.

Teams that are consistently in the upper tier in georgia high school football run a more prolific offense than Grayson runs. The offense that Conn runs relies totally on clock eating scoring drives and just as much on the defense stopping the other teams offense. The problem is that teams do everything necessary to stop the run, get a lead on Grayson, and then watch the Rams flounder as they have to move to an offense that they are incapable of running.

If I was the parent of a quarterback, Grayson is the last school in Gwinnett that I would have him attend. How would he show his talents? Hand off left, hand off right, try the middle, punt. Sounds like fun.

Conn either needs to develop this team into something more similar to North Gwinnett on offense or watch the Rams sink in high school football.

@ Camden74, Region1 6A best in the state (hahaha) Camden Co. is a joke, if the rest of ya’ll region is as comical as ya’ll were tonight against NG, ya’ll will be the laughing stalk in Ga HS Football. We (Stephenson) scrimmage them (North Gwinnett) to a 9 – 0 finish, had a touchdown called back and was penalized to death, plus we were driving and had to turn it over to the JV. Camden, tonight was like a JV team going up against a varsity team.

The good thing about today’s game is the fact that the kids didn’t quit. I know the Camden offense and defense will only get better! The coaches have some tough decisions to make. Conn same ole same ole every year, why not go with a change of attitude toward the game. The run and a cloud of dust does not work every year and clock control not this year. Grayson AD bring in a new coach with new ideas and teach players. When Grayson plays North Gwinnett soon the score will be NG 44 and G 7, a good scrimmage for NG. NG will be #1 in state soon.
Every year Grayson has the talent but no fresh coaching, sorry rams not even 7 wins this year.

@sportsnut, Propst says he doesn’t care about region. Not to many people know who won our region 3 years ago without looking it up. I think he says that because he hasn’t won the region with us. With 21, repeat, 21 new starters, I think Grayson acquitted themselves quite well. After a 14 point deficit in the first quarter, they played Colquitt evenly, score-wise. I expect when the Rams get in region play, the results could be different.

By the way, JAB, what is a “laughing stalk?”

Well, saw what a slid running back could do for North’s game….very promising. Camden has talent but does have to make some decisions. It’s the FIRST game of the season and first impressions can be lasting; North looked farther along in their preparedness tonight. The Norcross team that showed up (didn’t show up) tonight better get their minds right and heads out of the clouds. It has been rare that North has had solid receivers and a running game that didn’t involve the QB. We’ll see how they look against Grayson next week. There is still a lot of talent in AAAAAA this year and the road to the Dome will not be easy or anyone. I don’t think Sphire’s 10+ wins/season streak is in jeopardy with this team, even though they lost a lot on both sides of the ball from last year. Norcross last year used overwhelming talent to win; I am not so convinced they have it yet this year. Your first shot on the big stage nationally and you lay down! I just remember NG going to Norcrss a couple of seasons ago down 22 – 0 and coming back to win. If they get behind, they have not shown they have what it takes to win from there; but again – it’s just the first game. Let’s see where we are/they are after game 3….our first region game. I can say this – I think our team has the talent to go farther this in the playoffs; they still have lots of work to do to make that happen though. Colquitt has a couple of barometer games coming up; Lovejoy is the one that matters to me. We went there with a hobbled QB (much like we did at home against Camden in ‘09) with no Donnie Miles and were punished. Not that he would have been the game changer, Lovejoy was very talented last year. That matchup (Colquitt-Lovejoy) is actually one I want to watch.

Grayson will beat Berkmar, Shiloh and maybe Central and Dacula – 3/7 or 4/6 at best. Conn is struggling with the identity of his teams since the Sate championship – doesn’t know what he wants to be. Commit to the WingT of move on. Your hybrid SlingT does not have the QB this year to be successful. You are not being true to yourself by abandoning your scheme after a failed drive. I’ve know the current crop of Jrs and Srs since they were 6 years old. you have the wrong kids on the field in the wrong positions. These kids have run your Jets, Blasts and Downs since they were 8. You gave them NO reps over the last 3 years because they were playing behind your beloved D1 class of 2102, and look where that has you. You might be best served by heading up 85 to Clemson and being a position coach for Sweeny. Looks like your saying of “adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals character” is about to be tested in 2103……I think a little was revealed last night.

You seem to care since you’re in EVERY single thread posting about the same crap that Colquitt is mentioned in. All you do is hype your team up like nobody can hang with those guys. News flash buddy, you left our field with a loss last year. You may very well beat us this year, but as of right now we won out last meeting. Blame it on the refs or whatever you want to but you lost. You need to blame it on your offense scoring 7 points. Y’all have a good team, when you’re not playing like thugs, so quit acting like nobody is on Lovejoys level. Our offense had over 300 yards and that was with at least 5 over thrown balls where WRs were wide open for scores so it could’ve been worse
