Tucker 51, Cedar Grove 12

Once Tucker shook off the offseason cobwebs, Cedar Grove was no match.

The Tigers had a 1-point lead with 4:43 left in the first quarter but grew that to 38 by halftime, riding big plays from Dominick Sanders to a 51-12 win.

Class AAAAA No. 2 Tucker didn’t score on its first two possessions, but a kick returns for touchdowns from Sanders and then Yaquis Shelley seemed to signal to the Tiger offense that the season has started.

From there, they scored on five consecutive possessions, with only one drive taking more than four plays. It was ruthlessly efficient, racking up more than 200 rushing yards in the first 24 minutes.

“We were kind of rusty coming out,” Tucker coach Bryan Lamar said. “We made some plays off athleticism. Execution wasn’t as sharp as I wanted us to be. But we did some good things; the kids played hard overall.”

A big chunk of the early yards came on the legs of Sanders, who scored Tucker’s first offensive touchdown on a 52-yard scamper, flanked by teammates and no Saints within 20 yards for much of the run.

Meanwhile, the Tucker defense was stifling, except for one early play that looked like it cost the Tigers (1-0) a shutout until the Saints added a late touchdown.

On that, Cedar Grove’s Deion Sellers set up at quarterback in the shotgun, fumbled a high snap, grabbed the ball and ran back into his own end zone, then sprinted ahead for an 85-yard touchdown run.

It was a spectacular play, but it was the only highlight for a Saints offense that only had one more first-half play of 10 or more yards.

That’s a credit to the speed and pursuit of the Tucker defense, making for a nice complement to what the offense brings.

“We can win games off our defense and kicking game, but we’ve got to get better offensively,” Lamar said. “There’s a lot of talent on defense, but we were just kind of rusty.”

Quarterback Joseph Farrar led the Tigers in rushing with 70 yards on 6 carries. Sellers was the only 100-yard rusher of the night, with a game-high 152 yards and two touchdowns.

Cedar Grove just not ready for that type of football. Tucker plays fundamental football and they play PHYSICAL. So if you are not ready to be hit in the face GAME OVER.

@JAB

Probably a combination of both, Cedar Grove probably not as good this year as the past few years and Tucker is on a mission this year.

Cedar Grove has some talent over there. They normally have the biggest line in Dekalb. Plus they have skill position players too. Dekalb just don’t invest in good coaching. They lead the State in Football Players earning Scholarship, but they just don’t invest in football. Just look at Coaches Salary compared to other County bottom . Facility Bottom . Everything Bottom except Student -Athletes earning Scholarships and signing LOI FIRST

Would agree with “Dekalb Co Guy” & my region and county wisdom “rwdekalb”. Cedar Grove lost a lot of their weapons and looked like a team trying to find themselves, but they did line up against one of the best in the state and hopefully this experience will pay positive effects, for the upcoming season. The hurry-up offense that CG employed needs work – too many delay of game penalties – isn’t this the reason to employ this offense scheme? Agree with Coach Lamar’s remarks, the offense came out sluggish and this will not be acceptable when region play begins. Tucker’s #1 might be the BEST overall athlete in the region, while the 3rd element to success in a football game, special teams for Tucker is EXECELLENT. DeKalb County might have to replace the scoreboard at Panthersville – The Kid was knocking holes with booming kicks and the scoreboard sits behind the goal post, some 20 yards past the end zone. Tucker’s #20 made many, in the stands forget about the transfer to Stephenson. The Tigers have a few tune-up (scrimmages), before they meet the POWERHOUSES in region 6, which should allow for minor corrections showed in this game. Final summary: Tucker could have score at will, props go out to Coach Lamar and his staff, for shutdown the Tiger machine and allowing the JV/9 graders, to get reps mid way in the 3rd quarter – this coaching move will keep TUCKER as one of the TOP programs for years to come.

Sloppiest game I have ever seen. Tucker sucks and CG is just absolute trash. Tucker’s OL will keep them out of the region 6 race. 5th place finish is near. And did the LB going to UGA even play? Or did they leave him at tucker?

SHS Jag09 what is your excuse for only scoring 7 points last week against North Gwinnett, i guess ya’ll suck to. Tucker has a good team Elijah Shaw did not play last night and by the time they play ya’ll watch out. we will see what ya’ll made of next week.

Enter your comments here The problem with Cedar Grove is the same it has been for the last 5years the play book is limited to bubble screens and trying to chunk the ball down field with a run from the spread mixed in every few plays. It’s so predictable that its clownish , Tucker rushed three linemen and we never put in a full back and ran at them ,there was no adjustments made at all , where is the coaching?Tuvker wore the defense down the offense was three and out all game I don’t care if you have the steelers 78 defense they could not stop a team if they played all the series the defense played, if the offense ever could be productive against good teams and not the bad teams that they still look average against for the last 5 years we should and could have won state the last three years but the offense always suck in big games. They will make the play offs as a fourth seed which is no big accomplishment with some of the teams we play in the region. I see 5 and five or another 6 and five season. If they lose to Columbia the coaches need to look at the man in the mirror because the they were a better team or a 5a or 6a team excuse is out the window.the team also lacks a coach who can keep the players motivated they look like they are lethargic no fire when they are down.

WELL DONE TUCKER!! You beat the breaks off Cedar Grove and sent a messg to the rest of 6-5A that this yr is not going to be a easy one when it comes down to moving past TUCKER…They might wanna look into putting the scoreboard somewhere else at panthersvulle stadium tho lol (Tucker’s kicker is phenominal).. AND their HB # 1 DOMINICK SANDERS was very explosive and elusive!! BUT i had said at the beginning of the game this was a predictable, dominative blowout-game.. I very well knew TUCKER would play around with them in the 1st qtr and then unleash.their talent moments afterwards like most other top programs on weaker teams!! It was a good game though..It got so dominative, i left in a few mins left of the 3rd qtr!! I must say really impressed but would be more impressed if they could do that on a stronger 6-5A team… Very good production TUCK, but you still gotta prepare for those MIGHTY LIONS of M.L.KING & JAGUARS OF STEPHENSON HIGH!! Come ready because im sure we’ll be!!

Ya da! Ya da! is what many of you are doing; @ brookcy what are you talking about man! “Stephenson scrimmage a very good NG team, I was at the game. they were penalized to death and a touchdown was called back. NG is #4 in the state in the highest classification. They (NG) just beat the breaks off of Camden county at the Ga. Dome., I can tell you this one thing, Stephenson is better on defense and much stronger on Offense. You better be ready when you come to play the JAGS becauseuse they are on a mission.

CG grad what playoff games have you attended, oh yeah you probably didnt you just heard what some one else said. Last year they scored more ponts on Buford than anyone scored the entire year and they scored 30 against Pius and I think like 40 against Woodward. Like someone else said they get a lot of kids in school and most of them come from skill positions because they get a chance to show there skills because of the scheme they run on both sides of the ball.

TUCKER WHIP US ALL NIGHT WE COULD NOT MOVE THE BALL ON THE J.V. YOU BETTER BE GLAD THEY TOOK THERE STARTERS OUT AFTER HALFTIME .JUST KEEPING IT 100 DO NOT MESS UP THOSE KIDS SEASON LIKE YOU DID OURS.

Well the Grove had not made the playoffs for at least 10 years until Smith became the OC, so he can’t be that bad. When I played our defense was a big part of us not making it. I played offense and we always put up points but our DB could not stop anyone. I dont know if he is about stats or not but he sure helps get kids in college and the offense is tops in the county and the defense wasnt doing as well.

@ Real CG Alumni. You didn’t say when you played at the Grove but it’s obvious that it was not within the last three years, cause the secondary played excellent all three, sending both starting Corners to Division ONE universities, but as CG Graduate stated, “The problem with Cedar Grove is the same it has been for the last 5 years the play book is limited to bubble screens and trying to chunk the ball down field with a run from the spread mixed in every few plays. It’s so predictable that its clownish.” Now, I said the same thing last season and everybody got all upset, but the fact of the matter is if they struggle against Columbia then, “Houston, we have a problem!!!” So, I’ll wait until after the game to express my views……

@realCG alumi you sure that wasn’t Ray Bonner getting those kids in college and the Grove has always put kids in college even when coach Mabry was the OC and coach Harrell was there so that goes back to my original point if we got so much talent it must be the coaching.and to your other question I have caught several of the playoff games and I try to catch dr least three games during the season. As I recall in the Buford game when we needed points the offense did not deliver its not always about how many points you score but when you score them that determines wins and losses.

It doesn’t matter who was on the sideline Nick Saben, Chip Kelly, Urban Myer etc. If Ray Bonner was @ the Grove this year they still would have gotten thumped. They lost an All American QB, BCS Saftey and others. The teams that went to the playoffs in the past were good, but they never had the defense to match. Coach Bonner got kids in school, but the ones who have it are going anyway. So you just can give him the credit and say he did all of that. The same coaches that go to MLK, Stephenson, Tucker, etc they go all over the metro area looking for talent..So stop pumping yourself full of your own BS about your schools. Everybody is talking like this man cant coach, but you have a State Championship coach in Maloof up the road who was #6 in the country couldn’t even score a touchdown against BTW of Miami 55-0. I don’t see Norcross fans putting down there coach or his staff down. We talk salaries, facilities, etc. being the bottom.. hell half of you dont even pay your taxes so how can the kids have great things. Just look @ how these kids are getting scholarships with terrible facilities. Can you imagine if Dekalb had the things that Cobb, Fulton, and Gwinnett have. Even APS is investing back into there athletic programs. #Crabsinabarrel

@GhSaRules…. 1. If Nick Saban was patrolling the sidelines as Cedar Groves Head Coach, we wouldn’t be blogging about this, we would be talking about school zones because all those Stud football players that MLK, Stephenson, and Tucker recruit from all over the Metro area would be at Cedar Grove, and Cedar Grove would be ranked Nationally. “Now back to reality” 2. Bonner wasn’t the only coach working to get kids scholarships, as a matter of fact, there are some other coaches who went above and beyond the call of duty to get some of those kids scholarships. I don’t have to call any names, if you know the previous coaching staff, you know who I’m talking about. 3. Maybe if MLK, Tucker, and Stephenson would stop poaching kids from all over the metro area, (your words, not mine) then maybe the Grove could put an ever better product on the field. 4. We didn’t say Coach Smith couldn’t coach, we are saying Coach Smith’s Offensive playbook and play calling is Vanilla. Who don’t know Cedar Grove likes to run bubble screens?? Why he didn’t ask Coach Nicholas to become the O.C., and run the Offense is a mystery to all of us. 5. We could care less about what’s happening in Maloof, they have a top notch program. We should be on that level by now. 6. We talk about salaries, facilities, and being at the bottom because that’s where things are! Dekalb is one of, if not the largest counties in GA., but you couldn’t tell because most of the neighborhoods look run down. Unless you’ve been blessed enough to land a decent job and can live in a better area. So where is the money going? It can’t be going into salaries or facilities cause we’re not receiving either. As far taxes go, I’m sure most of us are paying ours. When you can tell us exactly where the money is going or we start see upgrades in our schools and communities then those who don’t pay might see a reason to pay!!!!! 7. Our kids are getting Scholarships because they are like the rose who grew through concrete. They might be a little rough around the edges, have some scrapes, a lil beaten up, but through it all, THEY FIGHT until they make it… 8. We’re not crabs in a barrel over here. We just call it like we see it…

@GhSaRules…. You’re right, every Head Coach should be able to pick his staff however, if you knew Coach Nicholas, then you would understand what we have lost in a coach. The guy was the fire behind Cedar Grove Football. The kids loved and respected him and so did the community. So, I’ll ask you this question: If you were “giving” the Head Coaching job and you knew Coach Nicholas’ JV team won ever game by almost 35 points with him calling the plays wouldn’t you at least sit down and discuss the O.C. job with him? Anyway, I hear Coach Nicholas moved on to coach somewhere else… Our lost, their gain…. See ya under the lights Friday.
