Softball: Class AAA No. 1 Buford rolls past 6A opponents

By Score Atlanta

Class AAA No. 1 Buford continues its reign at the top by running through a trio of Class AAAAAA Gwinnett County powers. The undefeated Wolves topped Mill Creek, Archer and Brookwood and have outscored their last first five opponents 29-5. Behind Buford in Class AAA sits Ringgold. Former No. 2 Central-Carroll fell 12-3 to Heard County and dropped to No. 5. Chapel Hill jumped to the No. 3 slot after a strong weekend. After falling to AAAAAA powerhouse Kennesaw Mountain 7-6 in eight innings, the Panthers topped Houston County 10-2.

Heard County’s wins over Central-Carroll and McIntosh moved them to Class AA No. 1. Vidalia also gained significant ground and moved up two places to the No. 3 spot after outscoring Atkinson County, Metter and Toombs County 42-4.

The loss to Buford did not drop 4-1 Archer out of the top slot in Class AAAAAA, and the Tigers remain ahead of No. 2 Collins Hill. The No. 2 Eagles posted an 11-0 route over Brookwood to open the season. At No. 3 Kennesaw Mountain is challenging for to move up in the rankings and have tallied a 6-0 start. Hillgrove dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 this week after spitting a pair of games with Alexander. North Gwinnett beat Brookwood 11-3 and jumped up a spot to No. 4, and sent the Broncos down from No. 8 to No. 10.

In Class AAAAA No. 3 Pope looks to be in midseason form after its 5-1 start. A 7-6 loss to Ridgeland was annulled by wins over Harrison, Walton, Sonoraville, Wheeler and Milton. Allatoona comes in at No. 4 and posted an 11-3 win over North Cobb. Undefeated Whitewater moves from No. 4 to the No. 2 spot in Class AAAAA. Starr’s Mill moves into the top 10 after beating last week’s tenth-ranked Loganville in its two-game sweep.

Northwest Whitfield stamped an 11-3 win over No. 1 Class A ranked Gordon Lee and still sits atop Class AAAA. No. 4 ranked Wayne County had a noteworthy 20-0 win over North Cobb Christian. Columbus moved down a slot in the rankings to No. 7 after a 9-0 loss to Harrison and 6-4 defeat with Blessed Trinity. In Class A Gordon Lee gets the benefit of the doubt after its grueling opening slate and the classification’s top 10 remains the same.

The 6A rankings resemble the CK Classic. By that, I mean the Cobb – Gwinnett presence.

Buford is not AAA – more like D-1….nice try!
